Cryptorchid Surgery

So, I purchased a very well bred puppy from a reputable breeder. She and I talked for a year leading up to his birth. At 8 weeks, his testicles fell, but by 9 weeks, one testicle went back up. She was very forthcoming about this since we discussed the possibility of me showing.
Now, he is 14 weeks, and the testicle hasn't dropped. We are now feeling the pressure to have surgery done.
She has a surgeon she reccomends but he is 8 hours from me. I will still consider going, but I'm looking for someone closer to me (maybe 4 hours away). Does someone know where I should look for advice or does anyone have any reccomendations in East TN?

Thank you

Gosh, Kim--that's kind of a hard question to answer. I would probably find and talk to local vets who are repro specialists. You are probably going to find that some vets won't do anything except remove the testicle which is no longer properly descended. That would be especially true if they knew you intended to show him. Since you are using a pseudonym I assume that you are aware that the surgery is basically illegal. Not that it isn't done and I suppose that in the long run it doesn't make a whole lot of difference.

If it were the puppy I intended to buy I would not buy him unless you'll be happy with him doing performance stuff where they don't care if he has both testicles.

But if you are going to find a vet to find and pull that testicle down and tack it place you should do it soon since testicles which have dropped but didn't stay down often are noticeably smaller than the other testicle and the older the puppy is the more apparent the size difference tends to be .

And in any case where a testicle in retained in the body it often becomes cancerous--which is why such dogs are usually neutered.

But if you do decide to find a vet or use the one your breeder found I sure wouldn't do much talking about it. It's amazing how fast information travels in the dog show world and while it's not illegal to perform the surgery, it is illegal to show in conformation any dog who has been altered in this sort of way.

I have heard a lot of claims and "stories", but in my 40+ years of breeding Dobermans I have never seen a testicle that was truly down, go back up.

Just my experience.

Dobebug is right. Most Vets either don't know how to pull it through the ring and tack it or won't do it. I have only heard of a few specialists that as skilled at this type of procedure.

Thanks for your input! Thankfully, the testicle fell on its own. Thank goodness!
