I recently noticed that he has these red bumps on his lips and was wondering if anyone knows what it might be? He eats and drinks fine and doesn't show any symptoms.
It could be acne--how old is he? it is fairly common in young dogs, though it is more often on the chin. Does he have bumps there too? Does you see any signs of the bumps bursting or oozing?
Yes he also has chin acne but I started washing it with antibacterial soap and it's slowly going away while the spots on his lips don't seem to make any progress.
It's kind of hard to be sure and you might want to take him to a vet for a definite diagnosis but they kind of look like oral papillomas--warts by any other name. Fairly common in young dogs--they are easily passed from dog to dog and usually grow and resolve on their own (you might look in his mouth to see if he has any greyish white lumpy looking growths--they can be very small to fairly large--something the size of a pencil eraser would be regarded as fairly large). Once a dog has had these he will have permanent immunity.
And they are rarely treated--except for the occasion where a dog might have a whole mass of them in his throat or if one outside the oral cavity gets rubbed or otherwise starts to bleed--then a vet might want to remove them.
But it was hard to tell from the picture exactly what is but I've been posting ears on a year old puppy who has one on his lower lip--I told her what I thought it was and she had a scheduled appointment for him anyway and the vet said yup! It's a wart.
First time I saw them they were on a red puppy dog of mine--he must have still been under a year because he was still in 9-12 puppy class--he opened his mouth and yawned at me. Oh my lord--he had a whole mouthful of these nasty looking things. We made a quite trip to the vet--he looked and said yup--warts. Then he ran down the who thing about oral papillomas and sent me home to look in my other Dobermans mouth--he was about three--yup--warts,
