Anyone else having difficulties with prescription refills?

Jada has been on thyrotabs and proin and suddenly we cannot get her proin refilled. I have called several pharmacies plus the vets office and everyone is out and they can give no answer as to when they can get it in. Any suggestions?

Have you tried a place like Valley Vet (online)? They'll still need a prescription but they will contact your vet for you (I think--at least they used to)

I'll try that. You would think if they had any available the vets office would know about it?

I get her prescriptions from Costco - half the price you can get anywhere else. Seems they would know, too.

I may have to resort to panties for her again. She will hate me.

Good luck. The last thing we need right now on top of everything else is to be hated by our dogs.

There is usually that type of pharmacy in your area. I live in Winter Park Fl and there is one in town. I would check locally.

Chewy is out, as well.

So is 1-800-Pet Meds, but their website says that it's estimated back in stock on 4-16-20.

It looks like KV Supply has some in stock, though some dosages and quantities are out.

Thanks, Rosemary. KV had what I needed! 2x the cost of Costco and they had 50 mg and I needed 75 mg, but I can make it work.

Bonnie...

"Compound pharmacy" is a generic term for a licensed pharmacy that legally makes prescription drugs from '"recipes". The prescriptions are made to order specifically for the patient and use the existing doctor's or in your case vet's original medical prescription.

My wife uses our local compound pharmacy for a medicine that she has to use on a regular basis. They provide it cheaper, with a better/more convenient applicator and at a constancy that is more to her liking. It's kind of like having Big Pharm in your hip pocket!

If you contact your Primary Care Physician, I am sure that they will be able to provide you with info regarding the CP most convenient to you

Hope this helps.

John

That is interesting for sure. Never needed prescriptions, nor has Rich, but nice to know.
Proin is really the same as Dexatrim a non presc. diet pill (as I understand). Hate giving
that to my dog.

May be a supply-side issue related to current events. One manufacturer is in Pensacola, not too far away, but it is feasible they are having complications in relation to required shipments from overseas, staffing, etc

I'm wondering if it's a supply issue as well, simply related to people "stocking up."

I don't think that stocking up is being allowed, at least here. The human pharmacies are limiting refills to one month supplies, even if you normally got a 3 month supply at one time (people are pissed because they are maybe going to have to pay 3 prescription fees when they would have paid 1). Most of our drugs/ingredients come from China so supply is the problem from what I understand.

It might come to a point where people are going to have to ask on a dog group/list if anyone has leftovers from dogs who passed. :-(

Aunt Bonnie - Compound pharmacy = Roadrunner and Diamondback comes to mind - have deal with both and were great to get along with , Believe both are in AZ .

I got a call from our Vets office this morning on some dog food we had ordered threw them , I asked about if they are seeing any problems , like you and the Proin , they have not at this time . I don't know - but you might be able to get it threw them after your vet called in any info to them - PM if you need there name

If it comes to that, there might vets who are able to make that happen (if they are okay with the liability) with controlled substances like Proin. For people medicine, a handful of docs I rotated with accepted medications from patients who passed and RemediChain is one org with pharmacist-mediated quality control that does this for oncology drugs.

An organized breed or sports club could definitely make it happen if we ever get to that point.

Cressrb,

I didn't think any of the "diet" pills were still allowed as human medication. The one that uses the same active ingredient as Proin was discontinued as the med (nonprescription) for human use because it could cause cardiac conditions in woman. The reason it can be used and sold for animal use is that the difference in life span means that it doesn't present the same cardio risk in dogs.

But if you can't find Proin you might think about DES (the compounding pharmacies all make that--it's a hormone replacement) and for some bitches works even better than Proin and my friend who has had leaky bitches on it for years says it's a lot less expensive and for her bitches at least has had fewer side effects.

Good luck--at least that's something else that once you establish a dosage (you start out with a loading dose and reduce it until the bitch starts to leak) most of my friends bitches have ended up being able to stay dry on a single pill a week. Can't remember what the mg count is but I can ask her.

After all this time has elapsed - a week since I ordered through KVVET since that had a supply of Proin. Just this morning they notified me they were 'out of stock' like everyone else.

Back to the drawing board. So far, no leaks from Jada after being off the med for a week.

Does anyone know of a homeopathic or natural remedy that might work?

Well that sucks.

This is what I give Lily. https://www.chewy.com/vetriscience-b...h-dog/dp/42068 It seems to help? She's never really leaked a lot, just a dribble here and there, but it does seem to happen a lot less often after starting her on this.

I used cornsilk for years with Coco. I bought it from a health food store in capsules. I would open the capsules and put the powder in yogurt, a ball of green tripe or catfood and she never even knew she was taking it. She just thought it was a treat.

Thx. The vetriscience Rosemary mentioned has cornsilk in it, so that is good. I am going to try all of this. They say the corn silk off the corn cob works great, too. My girl should like it she eats everything else from our garden.
I will let you know the outcome. I realize herbs do not work as quickly as meds you have to give them time. So I am hoping for good results.
