3 year old female incontinence

My spayed 3 year old female has developed a urine leaking problem. The vet first prescribed estradiol which did not help. We are now trying Proin Er which so far has not helped. I am taking her in for a eurine test in the morning, xrays what ever I can get done to help her out. Any suggestions.

Hey there. So sorry you are having problems with your girl. I guess it could be a number of things, I'm sure others will chime in. Our female doberman did that as well and she had cancer. Is the color of her urine darker than you'd expect? I'm assuming they did a urinalysis to start with before starting her on the estradiol and proin? They did the same with ours, gave her all the meds you named. We then had an ultrasound that showed the tumor.

I would say, don't wait and don't be passive. Demand testing so you can get answers. Otherwise, vets sometimes will "wait and see".

Keep us updated.

Thanks for your reply. Tomorrow I will demand the vet does every test at his disposal. The urine color is normal. Tomorrow it will be tested. I will post the results.

My old gal started leaking at about 3 years old too. I managed it for several years with cornsilk powder as I preferred natural remedies for her. Eventually I had to put her on liquid proin which she did well on until she passed away just shy of 10 because she developed osteosarcoma in her leg. She was probably on it for about 4.5 years and it worked well for her once I found the dosage that worked for her.

I'm glad you will get her tested - it could be something else. That said, Proin is the go to drug for spay incontinence. There are some other things you can try as well - so ask your vet about them. Good luck!

Welcome to DT Seymore !

3 years seems to me to be a little early for her to have this type problem - Reason , we had a Girl have the same problem , but she was around 8 or so , I will go pull her records and see just how old she was . She was Proin , but I gave it to her 2 times a day for better control .

I would have thought they would have first tested her urine first to see if she had a UTI - Kasia was prone to getting them for some reason .

Just curious here Seymore , But was your girl fixed around 6 months or so ?

Best of luck and please keep us updated . Like they say on the weather channel -- Together we know more

I have heard that Proin dosages may have to be tweaked to find the right one that works for your dog. DES is another drug that can be used. Work with your vet; most of the time incontinence can be managed.

DES is what I used first for my Velma when she started getting incontinent many years ago - it worked for awhile, but eventually had to switch to Proin for her. I forget how old Velma was when she started having issues.... she was around 3 when I had her spayed, and she died at age 9..... so maybe around age 7ish?

Vet report

We returned from vet. He found she had an inflamed vulva and her urine was ok. Antibiotics were given for the inflammation. Also wanted to give her estradiol 1mg twice a day. Hope this helps her out. Thanks to everyone who offered help.

Coco also had 2 UTIs later in life that resolved with antibiotics. Glad you can get some relief for your girl.

Coco started on a higher dose but I was able to find a lower one that kept her from leaking. My vet was fine with me tweaking the dose and letting them know what worked. I love the vet and the clinic we have been going to for 11 years now. It's an important relationship to have.

Seymour her vulva may be inflamed due to the leaking urine. Like when she sleeps and is incontinent, the urine saturates the area and is irritating it. Just keep and eye on it and if you don't feel comfortable with an explanation from your Vet, seek another opinion. Just my .02

Sending your girl good vibes!

Thanks for your help and help from all the others. I will continue to experiment with the dosage. See what happens over the weekend. The report from the vet mentioned that she had lost some weight since the last visit. Not sure what to make of that. Not planning on giving up anytime soon. Thanks again,
