Unhappy Apoquel and cancer

Just had to put my wonderful 8 year old male dobe down due to bladder cancer within 3 days of his first showing any problems. Bladder cancer is rare and even more rare in Dobes. He had terrible allergies from even puppyhood. 2 years ago before we did the regional allergy serum he took Apoquel for 2 different times that year for 3 month stretches. I truly think this had something to do with this. Anyone else had a problem with cancer and Apoquel? He was in such good health other than allergies. They were at one time seasonal but became year round as he aged. I have his sister from same parents from litter following year ans she is in very good shape and no allergies.

I don't have any experience with Apoquel either, but I just wanted to offer my sympathies on your loss. It is so hard to lose these wonderful dogs.

My girl has been on Apoquel for about 2 yrs now. I do bloodwork every 9 months or so, and so far no problems.

Hi Starlae. Welcome to DT.

I am sorry that you had to introduce yourself here under such sad circumstances.

Please stick around. There is no place anywhere like DT for support. Especially emotional support in difficult times.

Personally, I have no experience with Apoquel and cancer. Over the years, all of my boys have been allergy free for the most part.

Best to you and your girl.
To your boy: Run free...

First, I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing a pet (or any family member) to a rare cancer is heartbreaking. I speak from personal experience, as I lost my younger sister to a very rare cancer about 5 years ago. We always want to look for reasons things happened, to identify something we could have done or seen. Unfortunately, sometimes things just go wrong, and those rare cases do happen. There isn't always a cause, other than "the universe really, really sucks."

Veterinary oncologists have actually studied this - they specifically looked at Apoquel, and whether taking it increased the likelihood of developing a cancer. It doesn't. If there is a PRE-EXISTING cancer, one already there PRIOR to taking the Apoquel, there is a small chance it could have made it worse, but that is very, very small. It does NOT increase the chance of a new cancer developing. http://www.wendyblount.com/handouts-...lNeoplasia.pdf
