The past few nights here on our local news , they are talking about blue , green , algae , dogs are dieing in as little as 30 minutes from being exposed to it from swimming In it . This is from one of our locals stations ,
Mel , I was aiming to post that up yesterday , and forgot , then I read GOOD boy Sugars post this morning and his Mom won’t let him go swimming , Then it hit me !
Thanks for the heads up but this is one thing I'll never have to worry about because her royal highness would never, ever, voluntarily set foot into a body of water LOL
Living in Florida this is something we deal with a lot especially in the summer. Between the Red Tide and Ameba's that live in the water which can cause death. Also the presence of alligators is always on your mind. I really do not know anyone who goes into lakes or ponds.
Yeah...Heading over to our cabin outside of West Yellowstone tomorrow. One of the first things I will do is to check with the Ranger Station with respect to fire hazards and blue algae in our lake (Hebgen).
We have never had a problem on our side of the lake (it's a big lake. LOL)
But cattle have died upon occasion on the other side.
It's important, because there is absolutely no way we can keep the dogs from drinking out of the lake. We also check the shore for trout carcasses. The Rainbow and Brown trout have been known to carry Salmon Poisoning Disease (SPD). Pretty deadly to dogs.
It's the dammed Madison and Graying rivers so the water is running freely. Never had an issue with Giardia or other bacterial things.
This has been all over the news in Texas, as well. I believe four or more dogs died recently after having swam in Lady Bird Lake in Austin this month. Like you said, very quick and sudden death the same day that they swam. Two people posted their stories to warn other people in the Austin and surrounding areas. So sad and scary!
I do need to make a comment on this , on some of the news clips I seen , it showed ponds , lakes that were covered with this stuff , so thick , it looked like you could walk on it , then it showed a dog out in it as there owners watch them ! Then they were crying that there dog died . Why in the. First place would they let the dog in there ? I’m just saying , if it is so great , then why aren’t they in there having fun ? A little common since would have saved some of these dogs in this case .
Yeah Doc I am with you on that view.....we have lakes and ponds ...and you never ever walk near the edge much less let your dogs swim in that crap.........supposedly the fertilizer run off is contributing to some of our crud......bummer ....folks that live in these nice water front homes....and all the stinky crap in their backyards........Hoss does Salt water only...but even that I have to be very careful due to sharks .......unlikely shark attack would happen...but possible.............that supports being cautious.
One time many years ago......my sister and I were in the water .......my brother in law and Scott was in the boat.......real calmly my brother in law says....”I think y’all outta get in the boat now”...........they saw several sharks .......we were sun bathing on rafts .....that day I freak’in walked on water!!!!!! Dang boys were using my sister and I for chum.......figures !!!.>
Here in MN we get blue-green algae blooms every year. It's not always obvious if you don't know what to look for. It seems this year it's happening all over the country...maybe in areas it's not typical?
Sometimes it's not always easy to tell if it's normal pond scum or blue-green algae, and especially if you don't know about it, I can see where people wouldn't know to be cautious. It's really sad.
