Thank you CF !

Ali had a very good evening last night She loves company and she got some last night , 2 of my good friends , Terry and Mike stopped by to see her , God , she loved all the attention they were here for a couple of hours and the rubs and love did not stop .

Now I owe Badhabit a big Apology! Hereís his post from yesterday

I had a girl, Chanel, several years ago that had a tumor on her spine. She was 12 and the vet said he didn't think she'd be able to walk after surgery. I asked him about prednisone and he said he'd try but wasn't hopeful. She could walk the next day and improved every day for the next 2 weeks until she was back to normal. She lived for another year and up until the last couple of weeks did great. I think we gave her 20mg per day if I rememberr correctly. Good luck.

Im sorry BH. , I am just brain dead from everything going on around here , your post was spot on ! It takes me about 2 1/2 hours to mow and I kept thinking about your post and then it hit me ! Prednisone is used for cancer treatment and associated pain that goes along with it , PLUS it will increase there appetite! We had Ali on it before with the copper deal , she would not eat , put her on the prednisone and she started eating , matter of fact , I had called Kadins breeder and she said she has never seen a dobie never eat that was on it .

Back to last night , I heard from Aliís internal med vet , I questioned about her meds and the prednisone ? Yes , on the prednisone and itís been called in for me , question here , why didnít they do this from the start ? The wife and I both brought up the subject and they did give shot of it that only lasted 2 days , that is why she ate them 2 days !

Then at 9 :40 I get a call from Aliís local vet , he had lots of question on how Ali was doing , again we talked about the prednisone , he highly recommended it , then went to tell how they use in cancer treatment , it can fight the cancer , put into remission and in some cases , how do I say this ? Help make it go away , maybe cure it somewhat , I know , that to me is wishful thinking , but hey , my glass is halfway full !

So Badhabit , if I ever reply stupid to a post that was on the money , or any of you other posters , just back hand me and say wake you big dummy !

We are all outside this morning , Ali loves it out here , now what to feed her , attempt to feed her ? Ali , how about I fry up a pound of hamburger ? That it will be

Thanks everybody

Doc

Wow, shouldn't take this long. I would call but I'm not patient either, especially when it comes to my pets

Once the pharmacy gets the prescription OK'd by the vet it shouldn't take long at all--only if it's a really busy place where they always have a backlog of prescriptions to fill and only one person filling them. But I've had prescriptions get hung up in the vet clinic--waiting for the vet to OK it.

Just finished catching up Ken--and got to wondering why I didn't think of mentioning prednisone to you--finally realized ii was because the two dogs I've had the most contact with and who weren't eating were both dogs wth cardiac issues who were being medicated for that--not supposed to give pred or prednisolone to them. In fact my dog who had IVDD (intervertebral disc disease) which is painful, had to be taken off it and switched to a painkiller instead (tramadol). The pred was very effective for him as far as pain went but he needed something that wouldn't make the heart condition worse. Same for Miss Geriatric Jersey--heart condition--no pred.

Haven't heard from Jersey's dad since she went home with him so I'm hoping that she is still eating for him--voluntarily. I'm so glad you could use pred and he appetite has improved.

We all know that we will outlive these pets that we love but it's hard when you can see the end in view--it's hard to let go--the only reason we can do them that last best thing for them is to let them go. But while your girl will eat--she's got some time left with you Kenny.

I got a PM from Sugar. Asking about Ali , So I hope Iím not boring everybody on here with up dates , but here goes .

We have Ali on 30 mgs of Prednisone , twice a day , I have seen that drug work first hand , and every time in about 24 to 36 hours , A Doberman will start to eat .

As far as eating , still not eating , but her interest has picked up some what , I have been feeding her a slurry of A/D for the last 3 days , she will only take about a quarter of a can , so Iím feeding her every 3 to 4 hours . This my friends is trial by error , gettin the right amount of water mixed in and the amount she will take at one time , she took a half can with no problems , the problems is she will refuse to swallow more than she wants to take , so it will run down the front of her , so this morning is a good sign , I hope .

The vets have been outstanding to work with , yesterday , I made a trip back to get more of the A/D and the vet came out asking about her , I told her about Melís post on when is it the time to let go , as I have posted , I took that test and Miss Ali only has one she failed and failed bad , and thatís eating , she is losing weight and getting weaker , I have noticed that she has leveled off on losing weight and hope she will get stronger , today will be the key day , she has to start eating on her own , or she is done .

2 nights ago , some friends stopped by to she here , she meet them at the gate , barking and her hackles up , lol

Last night she laid out and chewed her ball up , I mean chewed up , its going to the trash

Iím I doing right , feeding her liquid ? I donít know , like I said she only has failed one of the factors to go to the bridge . As for me , Iím glad to feed her every few hours , but Iím also realistic to . My glass is still half full , but there has to be a change , and it needs to happen in the next few days .

We have had Dobers for a long time , we have learned a lot from this experience. Some good , some not so good .

One thing , you have to be pro active for your Dober. ! We knew she needed prednisone , which after pushing the limits of me and the wife being nice , they did give her a shot , which really did help her , they did that twice , then with the info I got from the vca doctors , I forgot it , not until Badhabit brought up the subject of the prednisone and woke me up ! It is so easy to get tunnel vision and it happened to me , keep your minds working ! For you and your Dobers ! !

Well our friends , thatís about it for now

Thanks , all of you !

Just reading this now backwards - so very sorry for Mrs. Ali, Doc & Nancy.

Back in 1987, our Tanya had terminal cancer, all through her.
- she lasted 3 months, after testing the cancer was to wide spread...to seek Vet College treatment
- her sickness, started with the occasional poop & sickness, on the floor / when I came home from work
- uncharacteristic for a clean girl

She got extremely weak on a Monday, so I book the euthanasia on Wednesday.
- maybe she would feel better, on Tuesday, and I could cancel her last ride to the Vets
- Wednesday came and she was even more weak
- that day I brought lunch home from Wendy's / chicken burger, fries & gravy
- she wasn't eating regular food now, so I hand feed her each and every fry (dipped in gravy)
- she knew Dad was trying his best, to help / and graciously accepted the treat food
- I had to go back to work, and it pained me to do so / but I worked for a strict company
- at 5:00 pm I returned, loaded her in the back seat of my car
- her back leg, got jammed between the gap between the 2 rear seat halves
- and not enough strength, to pull her leg out & up...she looked so helpless, in the rear view mirror
- Dad felt bad for my old girl, not a healthy baby any longer...at 9.5 years old now

What did I learn, this Dad timed her eventual death, by one day ...not soon enough.
- but they all really know, we LOVE them

>>

When Amy was put down, several hours after 3-4 strokes.
I gave her the dignity of son Andrew visit and Dad, holding and kissing her one last time, in Vets office.
- whatever we can do, to maximize our beloved senior dogs dignity...is whats always best

------------Kelly & (Amy - RIP @ 11.7 y/o)

TN , I donít know if I can give you a honest answer to your question .

First off , sheís on her prednisone now for 6 days and only yesterday , did she show interest in food , btw , she ate 3 milk bones at noon and again for supper time , but itís a start , that is the same way it started the first time , small steps first then she eats everything in site .

I am feeding her with a big syringe, 3 or 4 times a day with A/D , she is taking it very well ! Believe this or not , when itís here normal feeding time , she tells me sheís ready for me to feed her , yet , just canít eat her kibble , maybe today !

She has lost weight from not eating , I have stopped it , or close to with the A/D , this in turn has weakened her also .

I had to go the vets office Monday morning , and one of the vets came out to ask about her , I told her everything we were going threw , she still tries to be active , she gets her ball and still wants to play with , she is observant, still potties ok . The vet said letís just give her some more time . Her eating is the key , I will not give up on her , but have the feeling , even thou we are doing our best , it is just not enough , she dont appear to be in any pain at all , even the vet said as much as they checked her out , not one time did she show any and if she was hurting with the mass , she would have showed it. So thatís a good thing .

I have reevaluated her condition many times with the post that Mel posted up on when itís time . With her not eating , her ratings have steadily gone down hill . I discussed this with the wife , sort of , beating around the bush . The biggest change in her is her eyes , they are bright , not the sad looking eyes she had , I think the meds are doing that and she feels better . Also when at the vets office , the desk gal said that her dog had the same thing as Ali and with the same meds we are giving Ali , Lucy last another 3 years , now I know that Ali will not make that figure , but would be glad for just one more year with her , if she is pain free and out raising hell with our little boy .

When getting a Doberman , you must be commented and care for them , we are both and will be to the end , as she is to us .

Some may think were crazy or being mean to her for doing the care we are doing , but trust me , we are not being stupid with her best wishes in mind and I still have to thank Mel again for posting up her post on the end of life decision , I have read it many times since posting , so I can make the best decision I can make for her .

As I type this , girl is sleeping right next to me , raising her head every now and then , checking on me

I hate to ramble here , but the knowing is terrible , it eats at my guts everyday , every night , the knowing , as I look at her , as she plays with her ball , her walking up to me and giving us a kiss , yes , we all know that this time with them is to short , that day will come , yet to hear from a vet that she is in her short rows , and we may have to make that call , the knowing , and we feel so helpless as the many others on here have gone threw they know what Iím talking about .

So after all this rambling around TN , I guess at this time , she is holding for own , but Doc is slowly losing some faith that she will improve much .

Thanks for asking about her !

Btw , I have to have one funny !

When I got home from the vets , wife asked were else I stopped ? I said just went to the vets office , she said you have been gone forever , I told her the girl at the desk asked all about Ali , then a vet tech came out and I had to update her , then Beth came out and asked for a update , lol so I gave 3 updates , each one got the full details , lol , that can take Doc awhile I thanked them all for asking , but Ali is there friend and they are worried about her , there just not being nice , but truly considered, they all great people over there .

One day at a time, Ken. Thanks for the update

It's the same at our vet office, all the techs love Mocha and spoil her too much when she comes in, and with all the different pets that come through there every day, they still remember...for example, they all know that Mocha isn't too comfortable being close to strange dogs so before we leave the exam room to go home, they will go out first to make sure the coast is clear and if it isn't, they'll ask the people to please move or retract the leashes so their dogs aren't basically running free. And although they have several docs working there, only one sees Mocha, because she's been seeing her since day one and she knows her full history and treats Mocha like she's her own dog and I really appreciate that.

Thanks for the Ali update Kenny. Holding her own at her age with the problems she has going on is good news.

I can't remember if I updated the story on my geriatric part time dog (that's Jersey who is 12-1/2 with a heart condition was on an anti-arryhymic to control a major problem with arrythymias--the drug is very effective but an appetite killer. She went home for the weekend (her dad was still off work following the death of my friend, his wife) and couldn't deal with the failure to eat--had a long talk with her cardiologist--they upped the quantity of sotalol (another anti-arrythymic) and took her off the mexilatine (the appetite killer) and she eats--pretty well most of the time--has put some of her lost weight back on. But she's in the same boat as Ali--she'll tell me and her dad when it's time.

It's so hard to even think about losing these dogs--they are family members and Jersey's dad said when he dropped her off this week that he just couldn't deal with another loss in his family right now.

We think of you daily Ken and your Ali girl and send prayers and best wishes along...

Continuing to hold you all in prayer. I know Mel posted the link to the whole thread, and the first post was one "Quality of Life" scale. I find that helpful, but there's another post in there that I shared, and I don't know if you read the whole thread or not. I'm going to post the link directly to my post, in case you didn't get a chance to read it. It's another way to help find your thinking on things, and I've found it really helpful. I particularly found it helpful to read through the questions like, what are my fears and concerns? Whose interests am I taking into account? Etc.

Thanks for the update Doc. Just keeping spoiling and loving that old gal. It's all you can do. We all know you've got Miss Alis best interests always at heart.

I know what you mean about watching your beloved everyday and worrying about the time left. It is torture but that's part of loving these magnificent creatures. When the time comes we take all of their pain and make it all of ours. And we would all do it a million times over for them because they have blessed us with so much joy. Hugs to you and the Mrs. Hang in there.

Yesterday , Ali had 6 milk bones , which. Was a very good sign , I told the wife , she is getting close to going back to eating , this morning ? Well like every morning , we went outside to have out coffee , I asked her if she was ready to eat ? She perked up , head up looking at me , so I came in and got her 3 milk bones that turned into 6 ! Then I came in and got a cup of her kibble , she turned her nose up at first , the. I had Mr. BUSINESS do a sit stay , then rewarded him with her , kibble ! Miss Ali was looking like hey , I want a treat , so I gave her one piece which she took and ate , then back to Mr. B . Then back to Ali , then I sat down a half a cup in front of her , which she ate about half of it , brought her in and then feed her , her liquid A/D , a large amount , she went back out side and trotted slowly and got her ball .

So this morning is a great morning , so far , hope it just keeps gettting better and better

Thank you all so much !
