Doc, I know I am new here, but I wish I could do more than offer support via the internet.

You were the first to reply to my first post and provide a warm welcome and acknowledging the pain/crying with losing ours. I think it helped a bit.

As I have read through the forum and participated a bit, I have seen a lot of folks who truly care about Dobermans and.....shucks now I am crying....and loss for words.

Ali, you and your wife are in my thoughts/prayers.

Doc says we need to take her to the vca and have a ultrasound done to determine if its local or attached to other intestines and maybe what we are dealing with .

If it’s local then they could operate and take it out .

Ken, sorry about Ali's condition, but like others have advised, you will know the right path to choose for her.

Pardon my humor here if inappropriate, but if Ali were younger, had a Pica problem, and being a Dobe, wouldn't be surprised if she had swallowed a baseball.

Personally, I would get the ultrasound to help reinforce your decision, but don't let VCA pressure you into an operation, if you don't think she'd survive. Better off to take her home and ease her peacefully to rest at the right time with her family and pack mate around her, if your local vet will assist. I wish we had made this decision sooner with our past dogs, instead of letting them become emaciated, hanging on until their last gasps.

Remember, even though they are older, senior Dobes, they still have minds of children, trusting in us to make the right decisions for them...

So sorry to hear this, Ken, I truly am. This is just me and I'm not in your shoes but if this was Mocha, I'd do anything in the world to find out what's going on and make the decision once I had a definite answer. I know one of these days I will be in your shoes and when that day comes, I hope I can be unselfish and do what's best for my girl, and I know you will too. But I'd have the test (ultrasound) done, which will help you make a better decision. Prayers for you and Ali, my friend.

After reading so many posts within this forum over the years I have learned when folks are in your position......somehow you will “Just Know” when its time to let go.......meanwhile go through the steps of what will comfort your family and pups.
Sometimes we just have to do the additional tests to comfort our mind and heart that we did everything that could be done.........other people do not have to do more testing....they just know. So trust yourself......like all the others “YOU WILL KNOW”........
So talk to the Mrs......and both of you do what you MUST do........any decision you make ...I am sure......will be the right one.
Love you!

I am so, so deeply sorry Ken.
It is not easy being in that position. No one wants to get those news even when our dogs have had a good long life. F**k cancer.

I am glad you have decided to go ahead with the tests. I think for your own peace of mind, and so you don't spend years wondering "what if", at least doing the tests you will know what can and cannot be done, and then make a decision on that. As for when the moment is right to let her go... you will know.

Well ———— things went about the way I had thought , Ali and I got to the hospital around 10 am , I drug my feet this morning , she was laying out on her rug and playing with her ball , it was such. Pretty morning no here .

Doc came in and we went over everything going on with Ali , then another gal come in and said it could be 2 hours before they could get her in for the ultrasound, and she would just take Ali with her in case they could work her in earlier , I said , Ali and I’ll just wait up front , she would be better with me then in a pin , the gal said that would be fine , I took Ali out to the truck to get a drink and a potty break , when we walked in mother customer hopped up and said Ali’ s blanket is over there pointing by the door , Barb had brought out a big comforter for her to lay on , girl walked right up to and ladies down . About a hour later they came and got her , I made a mad dash to Arby’s right down the street and got lunch , I just couldnt eat breakfast this morning . No sooner than I walked in the door , they came and got me to have the talk , Miss Ali does have a mass rapped around her intestine ,, but no blockage . It is what is making her not eat ,

Options ?

Operate on a senior dog , with past liver problems , even though her blood work in unremarkable , a very major surgery , odds , not good of making threw the surgery

2. Take her home , give her some meds to help upset tommy + increase appetite and make her comfortable and let her have fun , for ever how long that might be , a week or months .

So my friends , that is the deal , a chitty deal but it is what it is .

Ali is laying on her rug outside now enjoying life , how every long that is

Love you all

Doc.

Tough decision Ken...

I may be overstepping boundries here. Still my 2cents...

Ask Ali. My guess is she will tell you that she would rather pass at home in the arms of her beloved humans rather than in a vet hospital either on the table or post op.

Love to Ali and you.

We had a similar thing with Capri--a different cause, but very similar symptoms and decision we had to make.

She had a blockage. She was not eating, or eating very little--drinking and holding that down, but not really holding down her food--she vomited maybe once a day. But otherwise, she acted fine, happy, was running around, just...not eating.

We had 3 (I think--it's all a little hazy somehow) ultrasounds done during the next 5 or 6 days. They showed no movement of the obstruction.

We knew that surgery was not an option--she had had several blockages with peritonitis, and the scar tissue had basically narrowed her gut in several places so much that food just couldn't get through.

So we waited, hoping maybe somehow she would pass the obstruction. She seemed so normal most of the time; she didn't seem to be in pain particularly, just...not eating.

But after a week of this, her demeanor rather suddenly changed, and...it was time. We held her in our arms as she was put to sleep.

It was terribly difficult.

I'm so sorry. I wish there was something I could do, or say to help. Sending prayers and hugs to you all...

I'm so sorry to hear this Doc. It's a horrible spot to be in to make the right decision while your heart breaks a little everyday. I know the feeling well.

I'm glad you're going to do the ultrasound because you need to know for sure. When the time comes, hold your girl at home and help her over the bridge from home so she can go play with all our loveys that will be waiting for her.

Hugs to you and the Mrs and K because there is no good solution to this.

Good morning all , just want to take a second to thank everybody for the kind words — thoughts and prayers for Miss Ali and the rest of the crew .
I would also go over some thing that happened the past week or two , in the hopes there may be some info to help others on here or wherever

It been tuff , I do know that , called the wife when we were headed home from the VCA yesterday , poor girl was still crying when we got home .

The talk — Doc took all the time to answer my many questions , never got the feeling to hurry up farm boy , I have other stuff to do .

1 how long has Ali had this , ( doc ) it is hard to say , but her thoughts were less than 6 months , maybe as short as a few months , well that makes since as we noticed Ali starting to loss some weight , she had a 6 month check up at the VCA , then about 3 months ago , she had one at our local vet . Then she went on to say that nobody would have found it back then .

2. Did the cancer from her leg cause this , answer , no , it’s a different type .

3. Will it keep growing at a quick pace , answer , no idea , she has seen them grow very quickly , some stopped , some grow slower . Never know

4. Time left , answer never know , days , weeks , months

5. Signs to watch for in her short rows , Answer , she will start vomiting more , and completely stop eating , drinking .

6 . Important issues , she has to eat , go for it .

7. Pills for upset tummy , and to increase appetite

8, what is causing the upset tummy , the mass is pushing on her insides , maybe some pain when she moves , walks , just general don’t feel good

9 . What I told her that scared me most , making the call at The right time . I know we have hope , hope she will feel better tomorrow , some miracle will happen . As I type this , Ali girl is laying right next to me , I have to wonder if she is suffering know , is it time now ?

This morning , I went to wal mart to pick up some Rachel Ray food that is in a tub , wet stuff , she loved the chick meatball With gravy ! Plus I got 3 other different kinds , I poured it over her dry , about half of it .

Animal crackers ! Oh boy did she love them . Plus some other treats she has not had in 4 years .

Ali girl will spend her last days here , no operation .

Thanks my friends for your help

Doc

Just lots of love to you and Ali...you're doing what I would do. It's tough on us to make these decisions. Spoil the heck out of her, let her eat whatever she feels like, let her enjoy the things she loves. These are the very, very hard things we do for our beloved pets.

Ali is so lucky to have such loving parents. Who doesn't love animals crackers?

I let Coco eat whatever she wanted at the end and she loved it. Her last snack was mini powdered donuts!

These loveys bring so much joy for us that we have to make every minute count and send them on their journey with a proper celebration. I know that you and Mrs are already doing this and have Ali's whole life. My heart hurts for you guys.

Ken,

Did the doc give her opinion if surgery was a viable option at all?

For what it's worth, you guys are in my thoughts and prayers.

She is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are her life, her love, her leader. She will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of her heart. You owe it to her to be worthy of such devotion.

TN , she started out telling about what they found , then went right into Ali is a senior and this would be a very major operation , plus the other issues that Ali has incurred . Then I asked , Doc , I am sure you have seen this before , which she said yes , then I asked , benign or cancer ? Most likely it’s always cancer and a good chance it has spread some place else She never came right out and said this way or that way , but a blind man could have read her voice and I could see it in her eyes and motions , when look up at you with tears forming in there eyes , that tells the story .

See TN , Ali girl is a rock star up there , all the techs know her , administrators, plus most of the doctors , Ali was not suppose to make it from the copper deal , yet she did , the. The tumor on her leg , everybody knows her when we walk in by her name and most take time to come over and pet her . The techs always say , we would have been back sooner but Ali had to shake paws with everybody

I just don’t understand why this had to Happen and I just can’t quit

Doc, just got home this morning to read this and it is not what I wanted to read first thing. I am just so sorry. Ali couldn't be in more loving hands, I know. Sending love and sympathy to you and your wife.
