Miley Has Pneumonia

Please keep my lil'girl in your thought and prayers.

This was my yesterday: She started gagging in the middle of the night a few times then would fall back to sleep. She got up and peed and ate her breakfast, pooped a good poop. Took her with us for some errands. Some gagging in the car. Came back home, she ate a snack, took a short walk, another good poop. More gagging and threw up some white bile a few times. Drank some water. Laid down, more gagging. Trembling a little. Temp 103 and just not herself and then didn't want to eat, not even her favorite chicken. So off to the ER we went. The xrays showed a fluid sak on the one side of her lung but good news is her heart is good. No signs of enlargement on the xray and sounded very strong, good pulse. The vet's main concern was to get her on oxygen as her breathing was labored. Not panting but just not normal. Also, to get the iv meds into. The bad news is that she could have a tumor but we won't know that until they have the fluids gone and then we will see.

When we took her thyroid meds back to the ER, they said she was resting and sleeping ok.

Called about 8:00 p.m. and the tech said she was sleeping soundly.

She will have to stay probably until Monday morning when they close. This ER is only open when there are no vet hours. So 24 hours on weeksend, 7-7 weekdays, and open holidays. So if she is still not doing OK Monday morning, we will have to take her to our regular vet. Luckily, he is right down the road. The ER is nice place. First time there. In fact, she is the first Dobe I ever had to take to an ER.

Just hoping and praying we can bring her home. I am so very worried about her. I hated calling her mom up but we talked last evening after I had an update.

Anyone else every deal with pneumonia in their dog? Can't believe how quick this came on.

From last evening:

Oh so sorry to hear this. Prayers for Miley. Stay strong both of you. I know Miley is in the best of hands.
I have not experienced this in any of my dogs, so have no wisdom to offer.

Hi dax. I am so sorry that Miley is ill.

I have never had a dog diagnosed with pneumonia. But, I have had it twice. It sucks. As we get older, we are much more prone to complications due to pneumonia.

Now I get annual pneumococcal vaccine shots..

Best to you and Miley.

Coco had pneumonia when she was just over 1 year old. Everything started just as you described and went bad pretty quickly. We rushed her to the ER later that day where she was diagnosed with pneumonia. It took multiple rounds of antibiotics until the xrays finally showed that she was healthy.

In the first week, she refused water and food, to include cooked chicken breast, lunch meat, cheese, etc., so we force-fed her through a syringe (a blended mixture of cooked chicken breast, rice, and broth). She looked incredibly sad and lifeless.. It was heartbreaking.. We just kept force-feeding her every couple of hours and giving her the meds. One day (I think after a week or so), she finally got up and went outside to enjoy the sunshine - the worst was over.

A few things that helped her during the recovery process:

- Filling a bath tub with hot water and creating a steam bath environment in the bathroom. The moist air helped her to breathe better and to get the bad stuff out of her lungs. We also did coupage to help her to clean out the lungs. We did these sessions a few times a day - I put blankets on the bathroom floor and laid there with her during these sessions.
- No or very minimal exercise until the dog is completely healthy. Breathing cool air would make the lungs worse. This was really hard to do with an active Doberman when she started feeling better!

Miley is in my thoughts..

Thanks everyone for your prayers and well wishes. Miley came home yesterday morning. We went to see her at the ER on Sunday evening and took some chicken and rice and her kibble along. It was so good to see her and her nub wagging. She ate half of what we brought her and wanted more which to me is always a good sign. She was so hungry. She stayed there one more night. We picked her up at 6:00 yesterday morning and transported her to our vet which is only 1/2 mile down the road. So he went over everything with the ER vet and their records. He did another xray and it does look a little better than the one on Saturday. His feeling right now is that it is pneumonia but he still cannot rule out tumor. She was put on 750 mg of Amoxicillin every 12 hours and 250 mg of Enrofloxacin every 24 hours until completed and then he might do another round of Enrofloxacin depending how she is. The gagging has let up a bit. Keeping track of when and how bad. Today better than yesterday and over night she had one at 12:30 and then slept through until 6:30. So good signs. Her respiration was 32 all day yesterday and today down to 28 and temperature today is 102.75. She is eating and pooping so that is also a good sign and she does have a little more spring to her walk. So just taking it one day at a time. She goes back to her vet on Monday unless she starts having any issues and we are certainly hoping not. Our house has central a/c but we have also brought up one of the demidifiers from the lower level to get more moisture out of the air.

Glad to hear some good news, hope she continues to get better

She is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are her life, her love, her leader. She will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of her heart. You owe it to her to be worthy of such devotion.
