What do you feed your dogs?

Hello--

I am curious what you all are feeding your dobes; brands included please! I have spent way too many hours of my life researching dog food and nutrients and supplements and everything of the sort- and just as I am feeling confident in my dogs diet, I read about the DCM study and the possible link to grain-free and so now, I am all over the place, obsessing about her food again.

I currently feed Stella and Chewy's Raw Blend Kibble; what are you feeding?

Also- I am curious about those who have had dobermans for a long time that have lived a long life; what did you do/feed?

HI! Welcome to DT from Colorado!

We have a number of threads talking about what some of our members feed their dobes. Since you're asking about the grain-free/DCM concerns that have been circulating lately, you might find this particular thread a good one to start with:

I also highly recommend the book Rosemary linked for you - it's by a canine nutritionist.

Tufts Veterinary Nutrition is basically on the forefront of the DCM/nutrition issue. This is their latest: https://vetnutrition.tufts.edu/2019/07/dcmupdate/

I recommend following their page: https://vetnutrition.tufts.edu/

This is another veterinary nutrition blog: https://weethnutrition.wordpress.com/

Here is the WSAVA guide to how to evaluate online sources when you read about dog food. There are a lot of poor quality sources out there (for example, one of the most frequently cited places to "evaluate" food is run by a human dentist with no training whatsoever in dog nutrition): https://www.wsava.org/WSAVA/media/Ar...e-Internet.pdf. The WSAVA is the world small animal veterinary association.

I feed Proplan (the sensitive skin and stomach, salmon).

McCoy was raised on Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy. This was at the suggestion of his breeder.
He did very well on it.

At 14 months he was easily transitioned to Acana Meadowland. He really thrived on this kibble also. This was just me jumping on the meat rich, high quality, grain free band wagon. He loved this kibble.

Currently, I am switching him to Purina Pro Plan. I am starting with Savor (salmon and rice). This pretty much has to do with all the recent hoopla regarding grain free kibble and DCM.
Same thing: He loves it and is doing extremely well on it.

Other than his base kibble McCoy has many other things added to his food bowl.
For example:

-Eggs: Hard boiled or fried
-Cottage cheese
-Yogurt
-Meat: Raw or cooked
-Fish
-Fruit and vegetables: Fresh or frozen
-Canned pumkin

And anything else that might be in the fridge that I think would be good for him.

The bottom line is that this diet seems to really work for him. He has a good appetite, firm stools and terrific skin and coat. He never has any bowel issues. His general heath and body weight could not be better.

I hope this is what you were looking for.

My two are a German Shepherd Dog and an American Pit Bull Terrier, not Dobermans, but for a variety of reasons, I've switched them to Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach Salmon and Rice formula.

For years, I fed either Science Diet, Iams, Pro Plan, or BilJac (kibble, not frozen), but then got caught up in the whole "must find the perfect super expensive "super premium" food possible" thing. It was more of a headache than it was worth, and I can't say as how my dogs ever looked or acted any better on any of them, and on some of them, did a lot worse that they had on the "not so great" foods I had been feeding previously.

My two huskies are on a raw blend from a local co-op here in Colorado. When I finally get the puppy, I will be using what our breeder uses which I believe is Purina Proplan but I'll definitely verify. Eventually, she will be moved over to raw but it would probably be around 10 months before I do that.

I feed my 2 Dobes and American Bulldog Fromm. They have many flavors that you can switch up without worrying about messing up their digestive system. It keeps them from getting bored with the same old thing.

I tried to switch them to Victor High Pro which is a at a good price point and had good reviews from a bunch of users. Their poop was even more solid than the Fromm, but for some reason, the female Dobe had skin irritation from it and I had to switch back.

I feed both the Min Pin and the Doberman primarily raw diets, made by a local Great Dane breeder. I've checked the nutritional information (which is lab analysed for each formula) and it follows the nutritional recommendations of WSAVA. I also supplement with raw sardines, raw meaty bones and the like.

When I travel Stateside, I feed Purina ProPlan Sensitive Skin and Stomach, either lamb or salmon.

I mostly feed raw, I get a variety of stuff from our raw coop including premade raw and raw components. I do feed kibble occasionally when I travel, I use Canidae Pure Sky.
