Chloe peeing

About a week and a half ago she had an infection in her lady parts. I took her to the vet on 4/27, the same day it was discovered. She received antibiotics and steroid shot. I told the vet I did not want her to have the steroid shot unless it was totally needed. Chloe pees unintentionally (it just runs out, even if she is taken outside all the time. I have seen her sleeping in the patio and pee is just running out of her) when she is on steroids. The vet (it was Saturday, so I did not see my normal vet) said she would not have this reaction to just a shot and not a weekly course. Okay, well she had to be in a diaper for a week. I missed a day of work to take care of her. She finally stopped on 5/3. Everything completely normal. No peeing unless she was outside. Last night she went while sleeping in her bed. Help! So now she is home in a diaper again. I will take her to the vet again. Did the steroids do this? Is this going to be an on going problem? Help!

Question BB --- Did you have her spade - if so - at what age ? I have read that now , the thinking is that having a female spade at 6 months or less can cause incontinence in dogs - From what you posted - that is what it sounds like to me - Kasia had it - but not till she was older - I think that they had her on Proin - it sure did work on her and she had no problems after we got her on meds . Might want to aske the Vet about it .

Good luck

Doc

Thank you, I will look in to that. She was spade at 7 months. But I had a feeling this was going to be an issue with her. I'll get her to the vet!

I'd really like t know why the vet gave her a steroid shot for an "infection of her lady parts"--what did she have--a UTI? of something else. Generally I can't think why she'd have gotten a steroid shot and not just antibiotics but I suspect I don't know what the steroid was for.

As far as bitches being spayed before or after a specific age becoming incontinent--here's some information. Large breed bitches are more often likely to be leaky whether they are spayed or not. I know quite a few intact bitches who are leaky--generally this can be controlled with Proin or DES (that's a hormonal treatment) and sometimes it takes both to get good control.

But I'd certainly talk to your vet about it. And it really sounds much more likely to be an issue of incontinence rather than from the steroid. Although prednisone is often the culprit for high dosages or over lengthy periods of time--it's more specifically related t the fact that pred will often cause dogs to drink lots of water and pee a lot more.

But your vet should be able to clear up some of these.

Good luck.

She has had an issue with prednisone in the past. Actually both of my girls had incontinence with prednisone. And yes, both had to pee more often but both also leaked even after right going out. Chloe was on prednisone for two weeks last spring and leaked the entire time.

Off to the vet we go!
