Ear cropping

We just had our 10 week old puppy cropped. The vet did not tape or post the ears. He also said that he would not post them and that we should just whistle at him a lot and we won’t have to post his ears. Has anyone else heard of this and are we going to make a big mistake by not posting the ears?

No, this vet is wrong. The ears need to be posted even if it's a very short crop. Can you post photos of the ear crop? In the top of this forum I made a sticky thread with dos and don'ts of cropping, be sure to check it out!

Welcome to DT.

Well, not posting might work if he's got a super-super-short pitbull or AmBully crop. Otherwise, he's going to need to be posted, once the stitches are out and the cut edges are completely healed (taping over open sores can cause an infection). Until then, just letting them hang should be fine.

By the way, we like pictures. There is a tutorial on how to post them using Flickr in the New Members section.

Post... Or be prepared fora "Crop and Flop".

Here is IMO, the best tutorial (visual) on the face of the planet on the posting a Dobe pup's ears. It's by DT member greenkouki:

https://www.dobermantalk.com/ear-cro...acker-rod.html

That being said... If the crop is very (very!) short, as in a "military" crop, it is possible that the ears will stand without assistance. But unlikely.

Just bite the bullet and accept the fact that your pup needs to have its ears posted.

I also truly believe that the posting regime is a great opportunity for bonding with you and your puppy.

Edit to say: Can you post a pic?

They MUST heal first. About 10 days before the stitches are removed and then another week or so until you've got nice healthy skin with no scabs on the edges. They can just dangle until then.

Then you start posting...and yes, you'll need to post (unless the crop is very very short)

If he said, "we should just whistle at him a lot and we won’t have to post his ears" he was either joking or if not you need to find a different vet. Does the crop look correctly done, not too short? Cropping is not something they teach in vet school. After the ears are healed you need to post. If you could just train the ears by whistling, everyone would be whistling.
