Off to the vet today..........appears Hoss has torn his.... left rear .....big toe .....pad.........not bleeding ...but constantly licking the wound.
Happened yesterday evening ......as he chased a critter. Shame ...shame........Hoss!!!
At first I was going to deal with toe pad issue on my own since it was not bleeding ......but after googling for some intel about toe pads.....appears best to attend vet appointment.
So thought this would deserve a new thread.
Will be in touch with the vet recommended treatment plan.
:grin2:
Poor Hoss--tell him the last time one of my dogs really ripped a toe pad (front center) it made a three cornered tear with a flap of pad still hanging and he would not leave it alone.
Yes, we went to the vet (actually I went to work and took him along) and when one of the vets had a canceled appointment and some time he looked at it and said--"I'm going to use lidocane and numb the toe and trim off the hanging flap and clean out the crap he's managed to imbed in the divot he's got there and then we'll do a foot bandage. And you'd better learn how to bandage it because it'll probably be bandaged for awhile before that heals up enough for him to not lick it any more."
So he cleaned it and trimmed off the flap and washed it with a chlorhexadine soltion and one of our tech's did a sugar bandage (sugar for open, dirty wounds like that works really well to prevent infections) and the vet came back and gave him a shot of a a long lasting antibiotic and he got to wear the muzzle he usually wore in the yard to keep him eating grass and when he was outside he got to wear a "boot"--that consisted of one of the empty fluid bags with holes punched in it to tie around his ankle so he wouldn't get it wet. The muzzle also kept him from trying to take off the bandage or licking it until it was soggy. I changed it every morning and it took about two weeks as I recall before he finally got to have no bandage and about another week to keep him from licking the how pretty healed area.
Foot wounds are a pain in the a$$. I can't wait to hear what Hoss' fate is.
Those IV bags are great for keeping foot bandages dry...they are thick very tough plastic. We punched holes in the top and used stretchy surgical tubing to tie them on. I had one or two; they lasted for several dog foot injuries. I kept them with my dog first aid stuff--they're nice to have on hand.
An extra that Bug alluded to that you probably already know...foot pad injuries are generally not stitched up because you risk just sealing in all the dirt and crud that has gathered in the cut. You can't really get all of the contamination out and can end up with infections pocketed in the wound if you stitch the wound up.
Yeah, we keep a bunch of I.V. bags of different sizes at the clinic--mostly we use a stretchy gauze-like stuff when putting them on at the clinic--I always have several at home and found that old shoe laces work really well too for tieing them in place.
Melbrod brings up a good point--there are several types of wounds that don't get sutured. Puncture wounds because it's likely to seal in bacteria you don't want there or they drain and you want them to do that. And very open wounds, and foot wounds often fall into that category--not only are inevitably dirty just from where they are but oven they involved loss of skin over a substantial are and really need to stay open so they can be cleaned and so that they can granulate in from the bottom.
And Paris is burning--actually it's the Notre Dame Cathedral--the long time landmark tower is gone--it was in sorry shape and was undergoing it's second major repair/renovation but it's just plain gone now and they are trying to stop the flames n the main building itself. How very much too bad. This newscaster believes that Paris will find a way to rebuild that tower.
I'm thinking the best they may be able to do is save the square towers and make the rest a sort of park memorial with as much of the walls standing as they can save...
The way they did with Coventry Cathedral (not NEARLY as massive), bombed during WWII...the memorial they made from it.
Adding.......But now they're saying the fire has spread to at least one of the two square towers.
Vet visit went OK.......He took a big chunk out of that back pad.
So treatment plan is:
Cone when we are not monitoring him to keep him from eating himself and to prevent OCD tendancies that accompany this breed.
Dermavet ointment for few days.......then dry dry dry.....nothing wet to be applied for several weeks.
Even if he gets sandy paws........no need to rinse or anything.
Goal is to scab up and let that toe pad harden.
She trimmed off the large piece of hanging skin......she told me ......IT HURTS.........so we are using Galliprant (non steroid anti-inflammatory)
So I guess no swimming for awhile......bummer.
Meanwhile ....Hoss is napping now...........real tough day>
Oh well..............moving forward ..............:grin2:
See the last paragraph of Bug's previous post--SHE started it.
It's not due to terrorism we very very very much hope, but as shocking to the Parisians as the two towers' collapse was for NYC.....The cathedral is (was) 850 years old and took 100 years to build...
Mel - I will give you that ! I even read Aunt B's post ! lol

dobebug
So Aunt b . What does this have to do with a banged up toe ??? YOU popping pills again - lmao
Hoss says ....oh well ......so much for my toe............bad karma I guess...........no one cares........BUT DUDES.........MAN I THOUGHT I HAD A CHANCE TO CATCH THAT CAT!!!!! THE SAME CATS THAT SIT ON THE SIDEWALK CASUALLY LICKING THEIR PAWS DAY IN DAY OUT ......while I am barking my azz off at them............drats to the cats ......snort@@@@!!! Dobe Power !!!!
For those reading along that need to keep a foot dry and might live in areas with stuff like...snow...I find Glad Press and Seal to work even better than the IV bags. Sometimes the IV bag isn't tall enough to keep the water (or snow) out. Press and Seal works FABULOUS - simply wrap, press tightly making sure everything is covered, and it will keep everything totally dry. You can then unwrap and discard when you come in. My vet recommended that when we had to deal with a broken toe/cast situation in snow.
Oooooo--what a good idea Meadowcat. It's sure true that snow is much harder to keep stuff dry in--I hated tracking in snow--because even when it was only an inch or two the track always ended up going through a drift that was deeper than my 16" boots were tall. And there's no early way to keep anything on a dogs foot dry.
Thanks for the great idea--even if I never have to use it it's something to keep n mind to pass along to someone who does.
He doing OK this am.........he coned...........man o man he wants to eat on that toe big time........!
He handles a cone just fine though..............
Thanks .......I was wondering what I could use later in a month or so when I take him swimming again..........noticed last week some glass from all the evening partiers............darn kids..........with white sand real easy for glass to be under the sand and not see it until you step on it.........I am normally wearing old shoes in the water ...thinking I should keep his feet covered while out there ...rubber looks like it would stay on his feet for 30 minutes or so.........thanks
He's a sneaky licker!!!!
Been having to keep him inside more ...just trying to prevent him from pulling the scab........want it to heal quickly.........he does all that boy skidding crap when he see's a cat or poops.
Man o man........ever since his recent romp up and down the street (thats when he hurt his toe) ....his prey drive light is turned on................big time with cats.
We worked so hard to settled him down in that area.........now he's just constantly scoping like a dude looking for a bar fight......ugg....back to the drawing board.

I'm happy to report that with feral cats we sight on walks (many) there are virtually no continuing issues with lurching or barking- just some attentive glances paid. In fact, now I have to point out cats I sight first by saying "Kitty, leave it" as sort of a game to make our walks more interesting. I then praise either Spock or Eva for acting calm with me and continue on walk.
The other evening a feral cat came walking opposite way down middle of sidewalk Eva and I were on, headed straight toward us! Not wanting a face-face feline/canine confrontation, I diverted Eva over to opposite side of street. She looked at the kitty, but didn't bark or lurch. That cat had some gal, though!
Only issue with cats now are those ones that come right in front of our front windows promenading to and fro like they own the yard, sometimes sitting obliviously on front walk while both Dobes are barking like lunatics inside! :grin2: (Cats are evil...)
Yeah, that's an attention issue and you'll have to spend time (and always a lot of time with a dog with high drive) training him to pay attention to you and what you want from him at all times.
Go back to the beginning with attention training and try to avoid areas with high distraction points (cats in Hoss's case).
Yepper back to the basics......today at lunch we began.........no exceptions...good manners all the way..........set him up for success! Approached the back door at lunch ......and he tried to lunge out the door to check out the cats..... both ears up with that demonic stare in his eyes.............boom...door shut......he jumps back........I started to open door again.....he stood there ...looked up at me .....waited for me to go out the door....also waited for me to invite him out............now thats more like him !!!!
Atta boy..........then gotta nub rub.
Thinking ......If necessary when off leash .....in our fenced yard...... I will go back to my 15 foot lead ...allowing me to correct him in the event he refuses my call.
My correction method with Hoss is to simply apply constant leash pressure .......until he gives in to the pressure.... and moves towards me .......then I loosen the pressure on his lead ..... allowing him to voluntarily come to me as requested.
Hoss was informed this afternoon his CAT PREYING day are over...........done.......all done!!!!! I think he understood......:grin2:
Glad you are doing better with your pups spock...........Hoss will pick up fast .........he knows better!!!
