I'm so sorry.

I saw your post and had to log in. I lost my Penelope two weeks ago to osteosarcoma in the right hind leg. Despite amputation and 3 rounds of chemo, we found it in her lungs 6 weeks ago and she was gone shortly after. We only made it 122 days from diagnosis.

We did her necropsy and we, honestly, had no chance from the start. At some point between her two chest xrays, she developed mets along her chest wall, heart, and in 80% of her lungs. And I was as aggressive with treatment as I could be. She was even in a Yale EGFR/Her2 vaccine trial but her mets were too advanced to yield any benefit.

My advice to you would be to make contact with one of the vaccine trial folks ASAP. My personal contact was Dr. Mark Mamula of Yale, who is running a phase I study with a EGFR/Her2 vaccine but there is a very effective Her2/Neu vaccine (it's pretty powerful and cleared from clinical trial so pricey). Carboplatin can be pretty effective but I suspect, by the time I'm practicing, chemo will not be first-choice in the pediatric model.

I could talk all day about how the standard of care may not serve some cases (2nd year med student here!) but this is all something to talk at great length with your oncologist.

I am so sorry. This is a terminal diagnosis but they give us their all. I know you will do the same.

So sorry for your loss of your beloved Huck... What a fighter he was, truly living up to the Doberman reputation! Glad you were able to be with Huck almost two more years after Huck's diagnosis.

When and if you feel up to it, please post some favorite pics of Huck in this, or a separate RB thread, to serve as a memorial for Huck.

Had to go back and review this thread from beginning to appreciate Huck and your family's incredible trials battling this terrible cancer affliction. In hindsight, at some point could you summarize Huck's treatment decisions and lessons learned before the close of this thread? This would be invaluable for future Dobe owners facing a similar challenge.

A Toy? Shred & Destroy It.
Stuffed? De-Stuff It.
Bites You Back? Wrestle It!

I'm sorry Huck--you may have lost your fight here but I know, absolutely, that you've gone to where the good dogs go when they leave us --to run and play without pain--hanging out together and waiting...

I can hardly tell you how sorry for you I am--it's so hard to lose the fighters like Huckleberry.

But he'll live on here in our thoughts and our memories and in yours.

Boy oh Boy Huck really hung in there and so did you.
You were successful at buying him more time on this earth.
Almost 2 years.
I just know how much hard work went into making that extra time happen for you and your boy.
Now run Huck and tell all of our pups hello!
Many pokes !!!
