First Heat

Good Morning all,

Well Rizzo has finally gone into her first heat, I knew it was coming because she started swelling about a week ago. We were getting ready for bed last night and I was like what is all over my quilt (brand new BTW), sure enough she was bleeding lightly. Switched out my my bedding for an old comforter. This morning I put her pants for dogs on, she does not like them one bit!

So anyway, this is the first dog I've kept unaltered and I have a few questions.

From what I've read, the "bleeding cycle" lasts for about 10 days and then immedietely following is the mating cycle, which is the time that I need to be extra vigilent about making sure she isn't unsupervised and safe from those naughty boys that want to make puppies....this last apx 5-9 days? Then the final stage is diestrus, during which the uterus walls thicken and false pregnancy could occur. How common is it for dogs, especially youngs dogs to have a false pregnancy?

In regards to spaying her....

I'm not necessarily in a hurry to spay, I want to make sure her growth plates are closed but also go through as few heat cycles as possible. Is there any restrictions on where she is in her cycle when she can be spayed or not? What I mean is....Obviously not during the heat cycle but does she need to be spayed right after her heat cycle? or can we wait until right before she goes into her next cycle? Just curious if I'm looking at going through at least one more heat with her or not.

If you can manage it, I would let her go through one more season. If she cycles every six months, then I would spay her midway, or three months after her next cycle.

Cressrb nailed the proper timing.

3 months after 2nd heat and hormones are balanced out
- if I recall correctly

Kelly came into heat at 9 months young.
six months later, second heat started.
- spayed 3 months after, 2nd one finished ...just over a year and a half old

I error on the caution side & bitch can get pregnant, during a 2 week window.

The Velcro hot pants don't do well, dried in a hot dryer.
- causes the velcro strip to melt some & lint sticks on it
- better hang to dry
- our girls have been easily trained to keep the panties on

------------Kelly & (Amy - RIP @ 11.7 y/o)

Our Kiri, the girlie girlie, loves her bitches britches. She would love them in hot pink with rhinestones and lace. She stands still while we put them on and then the tail starts wagging and she prances
around like Miss America on stage.

I would be "extra vigilant" the whole cycle, personally, especially the first heat. First heats can be...weird...for some bitches.

^^ I'm still laughing at Kiri, what a sweet girl.

Former Amy would leave her pants on too, but tried occasionally to pull the velcro strips and get out of them, at bedtime.
- dad would say / "you a no-good girly, dada is a watching you girly"
- while in the master beds, beside me
- she did it for attention, so we would have a little conversation, in the dark...

Putting on her hot pants, she would stand still like a macaroni / and look back at dad, like a pasta elbow.
- I go to work, and 4 hours later the pants are still on
- I covered her up on the leather chair (before leaving house), and when she came to the side door:
- she was dragging her warm blanket to the door (on her back) and wearing the green pants
- good for another chuckle

When current Kelly was young, she left the hot pants on too...but its something we insist on & dad was retired.
(so 24/7 with her)
- even though she was a holly terror as a pup, she also learned the routine quickly

------------Kelly & (Amy - RIP @ 11.7 y/o)

I use mens boxers for harley, they fit perfectly and she only wears them if she is wandering the house. If we are out for a walk or she is in her crate she doesn't wear anything, I just clean the blankets.

As for the cycle, I don't know much about them except once I start to see swelling until 7 days after her blood stops she is on a leash at ALL times (including in my fenced in back yard). Her bleeding usually lasts 30 days. On her third heat she developed a false pregnancy which started showing 60 days after her heat.

If you can wait until she hits 18-24 months old before spaying, studies do show benefits of this. After her heat, wait 3 months before spaying. Have you heard of ovary sparing spay?

Sypha's first heat was...30 days of bleeding. Then 30 days of nothing. Then...she started bleeding again. I took her into the vet. She had a legitimate split heat - she hadn't ovulated the first time, and the second "half" she bled ANOTHER 30 days. It was...not the most fun I've ever had. Thankfully every heat since has been a lot more typical.

She doesn't bleed super heavily for most of the days, so I only make her wear pants on a few days, or when we go to classes. I just spot clean the floors/couch/etc with hydrogen peroxide - it works great. Her favorite pants are from Working Dogs Cool Coats, but she also has some from MuttButts (they are on Etsy) that she likes, too. Lots of people like the thongs or french cut from Pants for Dogs.

I don't find it terribly hard to deal with, but Sypha is not difficult at all - she doesn't really change at all in personality, continues to work great in classes, etc. Not all bitches are easy.

Be sure you are really familiar with all of the things you need to watch for in an intact bitch. Know the signs of pyo. Make sure you do regular exams for mammary tumors (even after spaying, because bitches that go through even one cycle have increased risk of mammary tumors).

This is basically going to be a repeat of what other DT'ers have already posted (figure you can't say this enough times).

Yeah, sort of. As far as I can tell there is hardly ever such a thing as a typical heat cycle--and first heats for young bitches can be very a-typical.
Yes after the initial swelling bleeding starts and with some bitches it's very heavy bleeding but others may not bleed a lot at all and some are totally obsessed with cieaning themselves and you can sometimes believe they have stopped bleeding so you need to be careful about how you are counting days in each part of the cycle AND to make your life more difficult some bitches ovulate early in the cycle and can be fertile at 6, 7 or 8 days while others may ovulate late and will stand for breeding at 18, 19 or 20 days. And then as Meadowcat explained her bitch had a split cycle in her first heat.

The fertility guru's say that all bitches have a false pregnancy after every season--some bitches have almost no symptoms of a false pregnancy but some bitches will act and look amazingly as if they are pregnant up to acting as if they are whelping and producing milk.

Bitches should ideally be spayed midway between seasons. It's much simpeller surgery that way.

As far as bitches britches go--training is the answer to making sure they leave them on even when you aren't watching. Diaper pins can be very helpful for getting an exact fit.

And I agree with who ever it was who said you really should be vigilant through the entire season because bitches, from one to the next are so variable in how long each part of the cycle goes on, how determined they are to be bred (some bitches go from demure little girly girls to blazing harlots when in season).

Lotsa' luck--I keep males... <VBG>

Thank you everyone for the responses!

I rarely let her out unsupervised, purely because my male is a little less tolerant of her puppiness outside and things can get heated quickly so I like to be there to supervise. But just to make sure I understand, from this point forward I need to be vigilant while she is outside until Apx 2 weeks after she stops bleeding?

She seemed to get used to the pants quickly so that shouldn’t be an issue. She won’t be wearing them while she’s i. Her crate and probably not while we’re sleeping, I threw an old blanket on the bed so it’s no big deal if she messes it.

I figured there was a “best” time during the cycle to spay, just wasn’t sure when and Dr. Google was no help. I’m not opposed to letting her go through a second cycle, just would have preferred preventing it if possible.

I’m not familiar with symptoms of Piyo, but I’ll look into it.

Thanks again!

And if she is a door rusher at all, you need to be careful she doesn't squeeze out past you and gallop off.

I always liked to take my females on their walks in other areas rather than around my house (though I did stay home when I thought they were at their most appealing) just on the theory that there would be fewer males who could track us back to my house. I don't know if that really helped...we never had any dogs show up at our house, but our neighborhood almost never has any loose dogs around.

One time though, I drove to a new neighborhood, right after a fresh snow. We got out of the car, she did her obligatory pee and off we went. After just a few hundred feet, I decided I'd had enough of the snow and turned around.

And there was a coyote checking out her pee spot.

Ask your breeder, if you got her from a breeder, regarding false pregnancies. In my bitch's case it's in her lines - every bitch my breeder has bred and kept has them.

Before letting her out in the yard, give your yard a quick check for dogs and NEVER let her out of your sight. We have a 6 foot stockade and I found a bully mix in the yard her first heat. He was sitting by my back door, wagging his tail like a suitor come calling. It was a hell of a wakeup call - prior to that I thought this was one of those stories people make up to scare them into vigilance with their intact bitches.

@melbrod a coyote! that's scary....I live in the country, never seen or heard one but my neighbor said she has in the past, although not since we moved in, she thinks my big vocal dogs scare them away. Probably not and definately not when there is a delicious smelling one! LOL

She isn't a door rusher at the front or the garage...they aren't allowed out those doors unless invited, but they do rush out the back door because frankly I never cared. Until now that @falnfenix told me the story about the potential suitor! I figured that between Sully and my presence we would help scare off any loose dogs from entering the yard while we're outside but I never thought about there already being one there. Obviously, I don't want to take chance with her being in heat but I also don't want to put Sully in a bad situation either. It's going to be a long stressful month for this momma!

I'll probably stop walking her during that special time so as to not take any risks while walking (I was super worried she was going to go into heat when we were in Hocking Hills). There's lots of other ways to entertain a hyper pup anyway...and we could always use more obedience training.
