Dobierex puppy hereditary eye health issues
I am from the UK
We have a Doberman puppy from the "Dobierex" breeder that has hereditary eye health issues, PHTVL / PHPV Persistent hyperplastic tunica vasculosa lentis (PHTVL) and persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) as well as Microphthalmia (small eyes) confirmed by an eye specialist.
She already has small cataracts in both eyes and small eyes particularly the left one which means her third eyelids almost cover her pupils, this means she cannot see anything if she looks down. In the near future she is going to have an operation to trim the third eyelids which will allow her to see properly and have yearly eye examinations to track the progress of the cataracts with a view to have these removed when necessary.
The parents are Come as you are i-rex and Bigstar von Hunnoterra and the litter our puppy came from was born on 23rd November 2015. It is highly likely one or both of these parents have this condition but neither had been tested when we bought the puppy.
We want to inform other owners of this litter about this problem hence posting on this forum so they can take any action as necessary and ask them NOT to breed from them to help stop this problem being passed on.
Please let us know if anyone else has had these eye problems from this litter or either of these parents?
I think all breeders should test for this condition and other recognised Doberman issues to help increase the overall health of this breed. I am sure most buyers would pay a little extra for this peace of mind. In future we will only buy from a breeder that tests for this and other issues even if I have to pay a little more. The operations needed for our puppy will cost in excess of £5000.00 so a few hundred more at purchase is well worth it!
We look forward to hearing from any of these owners
