Nails--how much to dremel

I cannot keep up with Kip's nails, even though I dremel at least once a week. So I'm wondering if I'm taking them down far enough. Could any of you talented photo people post a closeup picture of the underside of a properly dremeled nail? I generally use the spongy looking stuff inside the nail sheath (looking from underneath) as a guide how far to go. Or maybe there's another clue, like the appearance from the front of the nail? I'm stumped.
(Puppy's nails no problem--it's just Kip who's a toughie.)

yeah Quincy's nails are like granite and they grow overnight. I dremel him everyday three days to stay on top of it. No pics to post right now... but I hold each nail and first dremel the bottom flat, then I go head on to the tip of the nail to flatten it and grind down to the quick 'spot' - you'll see looking head on to the tip of the nail a dot in middle of the meat. If you go any further, you'll get blood. Then I zap the sides of the nail a little to smooth out. So, 1. a swoosh to flatten the bottom, 2. head on to flatten the tip, then 3. smooth the sides. And I used this as my training manual, so my pictures would look like hers: http://homepages.udayton.edu/~merens...el/dremel.html

I suck at dremelng and I'm chicken to go too far. I do them every 5 days or so. Then I have Dh do them every 3rd time and he takes them down appropriately for me. Some seem to grow quicker/longer than others. Our new Vizsla puppy has crazy nails. Even taken all the way down by DH every week, we need to do them more often.

This photo is almost a year old . They are still this short because we dremel every 2 days, sometimes 3 days. With my experience, once a week is not enough to keep them short. Try doing it more often for a while and see how you do. Don't give up.

If you are starting with an older dog with long nails it will take perseverance to get tto this length.

I do not have a pic of the under side but hopefully this helps.

Yeah, the underside was what I wanted to see, so I could see how far up to or into the spongy area I need to go.
It just ain't fair *pout* I keep hearing people say, "I dremel once a month or so!"
Thanks everybody. Not sure Kip feels the same way; he always puts on his suffering look when I dremel (and he's really good at it too.)

Some dogs nails grow faster than others too. I have to do Rex about every 5 days, Tara can go a few days longer.

wow sizzle, those are REALLY short.. i must get on it.!!! lol

I keep lexx's relatively short, and I do them about every 5 days. They have never clicked on the floor and the only time I let them get "long" was after his surgery to help with his balance and grip..

I'm still pushing them back now.

I'm in the process of desensitizing Rocky to the dremel. We are at the point where he will let me touch his nail with the dremel on for two seconds without moving, then he slowly pulls back. He doesn't run away from it though, which is good. For you dremel people, how much should you do and how often to get it short without hitting the quick?

edit/ I just took a closer look at his nails. They are of medium length, but reach the floor yet. How do you identify the quick, and for the first time should you grind all the way until you reach the quick? Or is it a gradual thing?

See that white part? I dremel until I start getting white stuff which is around the outside of the quick area and try to expose that as much as possible without moving into it - like peeling a potato - you want to get to the inner white part but you don't go any deeper once you get there, just keep removing more 'black' skin on the bottom and the sides.

If the nails look like this photo in terms of how much white is exposed, I am quite happy. Oh yeah. I try to do them once a week - Yoda's were done twice a week by his breeder and they were nice and short, but then we had a period where I wasn't able to do them at all and they grew longer so I am still pushing back on them a bit.

As they came from Tosca:

It is a gradual thing - look for the 'whites of their nails'. Use the dremel with a light touch and don't let the nail heat up. Use the sanding drum, not the stone. I do it like I am painting a delicate flower - touch, touch, touch - moving over a specific area lightly with glasses on so that I don't get nail dust in my eyes. I also only use natural light - do it near a door while on the floor.

I would never go as short as Sizzle but I think these are beautiful nails. Do you make house calls?
LOL... you guys are going to shoot me, but I only dremel every 2 weeks or so.

Ronin's nails are always very short - here are his nails after about... 3 weeks of not being dremeled:

Kaylee's are also very short:

Oh you guys, I am sooo jealous of your dogs being all calm and relaxed during nail time. Tess (aka Little Miss Twitchy) won't keep her paws still enough for me to see what the heck I'm doing half the time.
