Inner eyelid covering eye @10 years old

Hello I am having a issue with my Dobies eyes. She is almost 11 years old and this just started. Her inner eyelid is coverering one of her eyes. Sometimes both eyes are effected and sometimes they are both normal. We have taken her to the vet and they checked for scratches and gave us drops. Doesn't seem to be helping. Also the blood work came back with nothing out of the ordinary. She is on a ton of heart mesds for sudden death syndrome not sure if it could be related to that. any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Does she have a cardiologist? If she does, that's who I would ask. Often-times, when a dog is sick their third eyelid will come out like that. So it might not be an eye problem so much as your girls general condition with her heart. Still though, I would think both eyes would be affected and not just one.

Perhaps you should ask for a referral to an ophthalmologist.

Does she act like she feels good or no?

Thanks for the reply. Yes she has a cardiologist and I am going to call her in the morning. I don't think she feels good she has been acting a bit off. Drinking lots of water, drooling, and sometimes when she is laying next to me I feel like she is shaking. Like the shivers. It seems to come and go. I am very stressed out. She is my world. I really appreciate your help. I will start with the cardiologist and move on to a ophthalmologist if needed.

Poor baby, she doesn’t sound like she feels good. Excess drooling can be a sign of heart problems (and lots of other things.) And some of the heart medications can cause them to drink extra water. I’d talk to her specialist in the morning and see what he says. Maybe she just needs a new medication.

Shaking can be of a sign of pain.

Other things I would consider
tooth root abscess (the roots of the upper 4th premolar & molars are under the eye)
horners syndrome Northwest Animal Eye Specialists / Horner's Syndrome

oral/maxillary/retrobulbar tumor

drooling and drinking a lot of water can also be signs of nausea

I would definitely let your vet know that the symptoms are not responding to the eye medication

Good luck with your girl

Thanks for the replies and concern. I put a call into the cardiologist this morning and I am waiting for a call back. They seemed very concerned with the symptoms. They said to bring her into emergency if they get worse. I should hear back from them soon. Her cardiologist is working today so that's a relief. Today it's the other eye that is being covered by the inner eyelid so that helps me rule out it being a eye problem or horner's syndrome. She is still drinking a ton of water and leaving drool in the bowl. Looks like I will be back at the specialty hospital with her today. We joke she is the million dollar dog. Worth every penny. I will update when I know more. I have two females but she is the alpha and very bonded to me. When I have time I will post some pics and introduce my four legged family in the new members thread. Thanks again everybody.

Well nothing came of my call into the cardiologist. They said her symptoms were pretty general and they didn't sound heart related. They gave me the option of bringing her in thru the emergency or squeezing her in some time this week for a recheck. Basically they suggested I start at our regular vet. I don't like waiting when my girl seems sick but we decided to go that route and take her in first thing Monday. Vets closed sat and sun. We will do some testing but ultimately we are just going to get a referral to the veterinarian specialty hospital where we know we will get some kind of answers. We have a great relationship with our vet. She will give us a referral without hesitation but I want her to have a go at it first. So I am just loving her up and waiting. I am trying to stay positive but I am worried this will be something serious. 😭💔

Well things are not going as I hoped. Took her into our vets today and they diagnosed her with horner's syndrome. She has facial paralysis around her eye and seems to be having trouble swallowing explaining the drooling into the water bowl. She is also not lifting her head up and seems to be having trouble taking and eating treats. We had some X-rays done to rule out a back or neck issue. Unfortunately they didn't see anything that looked out of the ordinary. Our vet is worried its cancer or some other serious issues. I have a appointment with a neurologist at veterinary specialty hospital tomorrow afternoon. We got pain meds to keep her comfortable. This seems to be progressing very fast. Our vet was visibly concerned. She loves our girl. We are devastated at thought of losing her. We have been blessed with ten and a half years of pure blissful k9 love. We probably won't put her through too much at this point in her life. No chemotherapy or operations. we don't want to put her under because of her heart issues so we may be limited to ultrasound and X-rays. Lots of cuddling and steak is a certainty. Will update after I see the neurologist 💔😭

She is a beautiful girl and it is obvious how well you have taken care of her over the years.

I'm sorry she has developed this problem while already suffering from DCM. She has done very well to be almost eleven as it seems dobermans are lucky to make it to ten years of age anymore. The DPCA actually gives longevity certificates starting at ten years of age.

I'm sorry her health is declining as no one wants to watch their dog go downhill, or relative, but that seems to be the natural order of things.

(((((Hugs))))) and positive vibes for you and your much loved best friend.

Went to the neurologist today and she basically confirmed our fears that it is brain cancer. There is a slight chance the horner's is from a stroke or inflammation but very small. We would need to have a mri to get a more definitive answer. We are going to talk with our cardiologist to see if it's even a possibility. Her dcm is very severe so I am not sure it's worth the risk. If we wanted to treat the cancer it would mean she would have to be put under everyday for 16 to 32 straight days for the radiation treatments. Not sure what we are going to do. We are still trying to digest all of this. We don't want to rob her of the last bit of life she has carting her to and from vet offices. She responded really well to her pain meds and was like her normal self last night. We will probably just keep her comfortable and monitor her symptoms. She is sleeping now exhausted from her stressful afternoon. Both our girls sleep on our bed. she is a cuddler and loves to be spooned. I hope this moves slowly so I get a little more time to love her. thanks for all the support and help

😭💔 So sad to say that we had to let jade go yesterday. She declined real fast. We are broken hearted. We have some heart meds left over that we would like to donate to a member of the community if it is allowed. We also have a very beautiful collar we would like to donate. If it is allowed I will post what we have and put up a picture of the collar. Thanks for all the help. We showered her with love during the final days and now she is at the bridge playing and waiting for us.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Jade. At least you had close to a week with her after knowing how close you were to loosing her. I'm so glad you had that time with her. I had to put my last girl(mixed) down knowing I had maybe a precious week left with her. One can get a lot of loving in during one week. A week isn't enough, but it's more than many have.
