How to research breeders and dogs' bloodlines, health testing and performance

This thread for our archives gives resources for folks who want to research a breeder or a particular dog's heritage, in general to determine their suitability as a source for a puppy--information on bloodlines, health and performance.

It does not have specific names of kennels, or good or bad breeders, but merely on-line websites or other places to look for registries or records of the kinds of things someone might want to research--health registries, performance or show records, breeders' output of puppies, bloodline records, etc.

It is a thread we can refer folks to when they come to our forum wanting to know where to go and how to do complete research in order to find a puppy. It is meant to provide information to people new to this process who may not know the wide variety of resources they could and should utilize.

My suggestion is, whatever breed you are interested in, visit the breed club's website to get information about health problems in that breed, and learn about health testing that should be done on breeding stock in that breed. American Kennel Club - Club Search and Directory

Awesome Thread!

VetGen DCM results:
Veterinary Cardiac Genetics Laboratory :: Veteriry Health Complex :: North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine
*Note that test is only for one gene and DCM is believed to be polygenic therefore results are not indicative of clinical presentation and do not substitute for yearly holters and echocardiograms.

Australasian searches (and other countries)
Dobermann Pacifica
there's a wealth of information via their profiles page also show/trial results searchable via the results page.

I think linking the DPCA longevity database would be useful, so people can research which dogs, lines, etc have lived to 10+ years old

Just a fyi on this...that database hasn't been updated in months, and never will be updated again. North Carolina State U. has a policy that forbids public release of health test results.

I'm big fan of Working-dog.eu. It's geared towards the euro dogs and is a great place to read about pedigree's, individual dogs and their accolades.

I use Dobequest often to get pedigrees on dogs.

Breeders' websites, if they have them, can be a useful tool for basic title/performance information, which can also be verified with AKC if titles are in that venue or the DPCA. I know less about researching working line pedigrees.

Contacting the breeder directly or whoever owns a dog or did own any past dog on which you'd like more information can be very helpful. I've learned the most about dogs by speaking directly with the breeder and/or owner. I've yet to meet anyone who owned a great dog that wasn't happy to talk about them.

Speaking with long-time breed people can be like tapping into a never ending fountain of information on dogs, pedigrees, and their peers, i.e. other breeders. The more experienced someone is the further back they can help you dig into a pedigree. You may be looking at a breeder who has only been breeding for 10-15 years, but if you know someone who knows/knew a new breeder's foundation dogs that can open up a whole new world of information.

Really I think that's been the most valuable part of researching I've found to date; contacting experienced breed people can be priceless. All the other information like health testing and titles tends to have a paper trail (health history can be tricky for some dogs but it's doable to find your way through). But breeders and owners can give you a candid perspective on every aspect of a dog that you won't find filed in some report.
