Hi everyone
I am new to the forum. I am having a really hard time finding a good, reputable breeder in North Carolina. I even have looked in Virginia and seems that not a lot of breeders there who are not in it for money ☹ or who aren’t just downright shady.
Any suggestions?
My husband and I had a red and tan dobe girl for 13 years and miss her very much. We didn’t do very good research before getting her though and she had a bunch of health problems so I definitely know what not to do this go around.

Thanks for any advice! 😊

It's going to be nearly impossible to find an ethical breeder who will leave ears natural for you. Our breed standard is for cropped ears.

The only good breeder I know in that area who will leave an uncropped ear out there is Kathy Davieds of Jesaran Dobermans - she's in Virginia. She typically has a pretty long waiting list. You might contact her and see if there's anyone else she could recommend to you. Her contact information is on the DPCA breeder referral (go to www.dpca.org and click on the breeder referral).

I've seen several people come to the forum and ask about getting a Doberman with natural ears. The response on this forum is that we have nothing against natural ears but no reputable breeder will let that happen. It should be up to the owner whether or not the ears are cropped. If you don't plan on showing your dobe this should not be a problem with the breeder or anyone else.

You have tried to have this discussion on this forum before, and I have warned you about this before. The crop/dock debate has been done to death.

I will refresh your memory: https://www.dobermantalk.com/ear-cropping-posting/305045-difficult-find-natural-doberman.html

Again, we're simply stating that, in this country, the breed standard calls for a cropped ear, and a docked tail. Until that changes, it is difficult to find breeders who adhere to the standards we'd consider ethical in terms of breeding to the standard (in terms of the entire dog, which is important for function), doing appropriate health testing, breeding good temperaments, etc.

It CAN be done, but it requires being patient, waiting, seeking those breeders out....

This is NOT the place to have a crop/dock debate. More breeders may be willing to do it, but they are still few and far between.

Still looking

Hi again everyone
Circling back
Still looking and we are willing to have cropped ears. It’s just new to us since our previous dobe girl was from an oops litter and we didn’t do our due diligence when searching for a dog (which we are definitely doing this go around).
So still searching in the NC/VA area for a dobe puppy. Any information would be great. I have had contact with some super nice breeder here in NC and some not so nice here as well as VA ☹...
I realize we probably have exhausted our searching because I imagine all the breeders are listed on DPCA or AKC and I have been cross referencing them to the dobequest database. I might be doing overkill lol but even though our girl was so wonderful and we had her for 13 years, she had a heap of health problems and I know it’s because she didn’t come from good stock. Wouldn’t change any of those 13 years but want a healthier pup this go around (or do all I can to have a healthy pup).

Thanks!!!

Just as a note, most good breeders are not listed on the AKC breeders list. Also, many are not listed on the DPCA breeders list if they breed infrequently. I used to be on the DPCA breeders list, but it was a constant barrage of emails and phone calls. After my 3rd litter, I took my name off the list. Glad I did since it has been 8 1/2 years since my last litter..... and I still get emails all the time. Most bigger breeders will often know of other litters from good breeders who are not listed because of how infrequently they breed. If they think you sound like someone they might actually sell a puppy to, they will refer you to other upcoming litters they might know of. Keep trying!

I will say not all breeders are diligent about updating Dobequest, unfortunately. That can make for a frustrating experience.

If you haven't contacted Kathy Davieds in Virginia yet, I know someone she often co-breeds with is planning a spring breeding out of one of the bitches from a litter they co-bred a few years back. Nice longevity and health in that breeding - the grandmother is in my boy's pedigree and just turned 13. I'm sure Kathy could get you contact information.

I'm not sure who the sire of the litter will be or if the waiting list is full. Feel free to message me if you need more info.

Welcome from Colorado! And really, I applaud you for doing research. I did something similar as well as made a lot of phone calls and emails before settling on my breeder. She's in PA so that may be a little far for you (NOPE NOT K-TAL, WOULDN'T GO NEAR THEM WITHOUT A TEN FOOT POLE) but I will say this, don't rush into it. Take the time and do your research and prep. The right pup will come at the right time.

In NC I can recommend Goldgrove and Schohaus. I do know that Schohaus is expecting puppies at the end of the year. There are some other breeders in NC but nobody that has puppies very frequently. If you look to other states you might try Aludra dobermans in Georgia; she breeds frequently. I also know that Adamas is planning a few litters shortly. Good luck!

If you decide you are open to a cropped pup there are lots and lots of people that would be willing to help. Usually your breeder can connect you to someone in your area, and the DPCA chapter clubs are another source of people who are all willing to help new people post their pup.

Thanks everyone!!

I definitely don’t have any problems with cropped ears, just will need to learn the after care since it’s new territory for me. They are very regal looking for sure!

Appreciate all info! If anyone is willing to message me with breeder recommendations (if not already mentioned in the thread) it would be much appreciated. I didn’t realize not all listed on DPCA or AKC. I kind of feel like I am going cross eyed researching with the dobequest sight lol 😝

Working breeders will often leave ears and tails intact because if someone wanted to compete in working venues overseas their choices would be limited with a cropped/docked dog. However if you are not planning on seriously working the dog, it would not be a road you would want to travel.
