AKC registered name

Good day all -

I recently purchased a puppy and I need to provide feedback to the breeder about his AKC registered name - I am going to omit the kennel name for obvious reasons, but I will provide the balance of the name and ask if you think it an appropriate name, please answer truthfully.

The name is "Global Pandemic".

I have asked for it to be changed - the breeder at first said no, but now is willing to consider it to something less offensive, at least in my opinion and from the remarks that I have received from dog show and non-dog show friends.

Political correctness aside, my concern is that show judges, stewards, club officials and fellow exhibitors will see this name and it will/may offend them, they may have lost a family member, loved one or co-worker to a disease that has claimed over 100,000 lives.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Why are you going to omit the kennel name? or do you just mean you're not mentioning it here on Doberman talk? What is the theme of the litter?

I don't blame you for wanting it changed. I'd not like to have my dog registered as Global Pandemic, either.

Is there a litter theme that you could play off of, without being specific to COVID 19?

I'm sure you can come up with something better. JMO but Global Pandemic would be right up there with Sh_t For Brains.

Another vote for a name change. I hope that your pup's breeder sees your POV and accommodates you.

That being said, I had a friend that called his dog "Ebola". Most folks thought that was funny. However, it was not an AKC registered name, but rather a pet name.

Each to their own, I guess...

I was playing around on another thread about CoVid themed litters, tongue in cheek, but I came up with these. Of course, this was back at the end of May; in retrospect, some of these still sorta work, others….not so much.

"I'm thinking the litter theme will be CoVid related. (except there will probably be a lot of breeders going with that)

So I'll come up with a few:

First Responder
Strong Medicine
Better Safe than Sorry
The Doctor is In
Isn't There a Shot for That
Home Remedy
Doctor's Orders"

It may not be the best registered name ever but over the years I've had the occasional dog with a registered name I didn't care for much and I certainly knew other dogs who really had registered names that I thought sucked.

And I've definitely had dogs with questionable call names (I mean, let's face it Toad isn't the most charming name in the world--and even if you called him Toed--which was part of his registered name it sounds just like Toad--and more than one judge (not the conformation judges but the performance judges) asked about that.

Everyone survived the less than lovely and less than politically or socially correct names and personally I don't pay a lot of attention to registered names--owners often have no choice in what the registered name is.

But maybe I'm in the minority on this.

Momentary thread jack for Bug - the breeder of one of my former GSPs had a solid liver GSP named Toad, and he lived a very long life. Your two Toads passed around the same time. One always made me think of the other.

Personally, I'd take a pass on the registered name of Global Pandemic. In a normal time, ok, I could deal with it. But like you said, it could really bring up some bad memories for people. It's certainly not full of positive memories. I wouldn't be particularly concerned about judges seeing it. But I still wouldn't want it.

One registered Doberman name I hate is Cambria's Heart Attack. I mean, come on!

Yeah, I remember the first time I ran into the Cambria's Heart Attack--I thought "Boy, I wouldn't be naming a Doberman that!"

I got a good laugh at the fact that there was a GSP also named Toad--at least the Toad's had longevity going for them. It's also funny that the GSP was a solid liver--as i recall from some friends from years ago who bred GSP's solid liver was about as popular as fawn for Dobes. (Even though I looked for a show quality fawn Doberman for around 50 years--and got everything I asked for in that dog.)

dobebug

PS Well, I remembered it as "Heart Attack" too--but as soon as I read your last post I realized that we were both wrong (but not very wrong...)

It's not my favorite, and if the breeder is open to something else, I'd definitely suggest an alternative that is within the "theme" but perhaps less brash.

Still thread jacking ... the liver GSPs seems to have really gained in popularity in recent years, at least in Canada. I'm personally not a fan. I like the speckles and patches myself.

Maybe because of Robert Parker and his Spencer series. Spencer rescued a solid liver GSP bitch and when she passed away went out and found himself another one. I think he called GSP #1 and #2 both Pearl.

I'm with you I like speckles and patches too. Dave Miller (Michelle Santana's S/O who bred really nice GSP's for years and years had a couple of lovely speckled males--I'd have taken either one of them home.

For my 3 litters, I came up with a theme and a list of names that puppy families could choose from. In a few cases, they came up with a name that went with the theme and I ok'd it. AKC papers were filled out at my house and I sent them in to make sure that nothing was changed and that it got done. I gave more leeway for pet families - there are a couple of names from my last litter that are a bit odd, but I figured that they were pets and whatever. haha.

Hmm... it's a bit off-beat, but "Kennel-name Going Viral" would fit with the letter of the theme, but since it has a completely different meaning in accepted use, wouldn't be a direct reference to COVID.

I like the names Melbrod and Rosermary suggested. I'd also like to suggest "I Need a Doctor". Works with what's going on and it happens to be the name of a song that was playing on my drive into work.

"Idle hour pandemic"..... our girls AKC name. Long story but it was chosen in Oct 2019 way before Covid, and we kept it. Much debate has taken place about the name tho since the Covid-19 outbreak, and how we thought people would react.
