AKC registered name

Good day all -

I recently purchased a puppy and I need to provide feedback to the breeder about his AKC registered name - I am going to omit the kennel name for obvious reasons, but I will provide the balance of the name and ask if you think it an appropriate name, please answer truthfully.

The name is "Global Pandemic".

I have asked for it to be changed - the breeder at first said no, but now is willing to consider it to something less offensive, at least in my opinion and from the remarks that I have received from dog show and non-dog show friends.

Political correctness aside, my concern is that show judges, stewards, club officials and fellow exhibitors will see this name and it will/may offend them, they may have lost a family member, loved one or co-worker to a disease that has claimed over 100,000 lives.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

I don't blame you for wanting it changed. I'd not like to have my dog registered as Global Pandemic, either.

Is there a litter theme that you could play off of, without being specific to COVID 19?

I was playing around on another thread about CoVid themed litters, tongue in cheek, but I came up with these. Of course, this was back at the end of May; in retrospect, some of these still sorta work, others….not so much.

"I'm thinking the litter theme will be CoVid related. (except there will probably be a lot of breeders going with that)

So I'll come up with a few:

First Responder
Strong Medicine
Better Safe than Sorry
The Doctor is In
Isn't There a Shot for That
Home Remedy
Doctor's Orders"

It may not be the best registered name ever but over the years I've had the occasional dog with a registered name I didn't care for much and I certainly knew other dogs who really had registered names that I thought sucked.

And I've definitely had dogs with questionable call names (I mean, let's face it Toad isn't the most charming name in the world--and even if you called him Toed--which was part of his registered name it sounds just like Toad--and more than one judge (not the conformation judges but the performance judges) asked about that.

Everyone survived the less than lovely and less than politically or socially correct names and personally I don't pay a lot of attention to registered names--owners often have no choice in what the registered name is.

But maybe I'm in the minority on this.

Momentary thread jack for Bug - the breeder of one of my former GSPs had a solid liver GSP named Toad, and he lived a very long life. Your two Toads passed around the same time. One always made me think of the other.

Personally, I'd take a pass on the registered name of Global Pandemic. In a normal time, ok, I could deal with it. But like you said, it could really bring up some bad memories for people. It's certainly not full of positive memories. I wouldn't be particularly concerned about judges seeing it. But I still wouldn't want it.

One registered Doberman name I hate is Cambria's Heart Attack. I mean, come on!

It's not my favorite, and if the breeder is open to something else, I'd definitely suggest an alternative that is within the "theme" but perhaps less brash.

Hmm... it's a bit off-beat, but "Kennel-name Going Viral" would fit with the letter of the theme, but since it has a completely different meaning in accepted use, wouldn't be a direct reference to COVID.

For my 3 litters, I came up with a theme and a list of names that puppy families could choose from. In a few cases, they came up with a name that went with the theme and I ok'd it. AKC papers were filled out at my house and I sent them in to make sure that nothing was changed and that it got done. I gave more leeway for pet families - there are a couple of names from my last litter that are a bit odd, but I figured that they were pets and whatever. haha.

I like the names Melbrod and Rosermary suggested. I'd also like to suggest "I Need a Doctor". Works with what's going on and it happens to be the name of a song that was playing on my drive into work.
