Looking for advice on a Quality Breeder

Unfortunately, our 3.5 year old red doberman male passed this month. He was a rescue and died from post CCL surgery complications (most likely a blood clot). My husband and I are devastated and not ready for a puppy just yet. However, we know we loved his intelligence and mischievous personality. We also talked about it and we know we will get a new doberman. However, this time, due to the grief, we would like to find someone that breeds for health. We live in Ohio and what is important to us is going to be temperament and health. We are not going to breed the dog or show the dog. We do not have children. All of our dogs have pet insurance. I know to find a good breeder it takes time so I am asking for advice on breeders now so I can research and get on a wait list for hopefully sometime next year.

Thank you,

Erin

I am very sorry for your lost. You and your husband have my best thoughts and wishes.

I know when I started my search for my breeder, I had browsed through the DPCA website as well as did a google search. With breeders that I thought I liked, I browsed Dobequest to read some pedigrees. Maybe that will help with your search.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

When I initially started researching breeders for longevity and health, I started with browsing the DPCA longevity listings, and the "bred for longevity" listings, to see what breeders showed up frequently on them, and then did more research to see which of those might be breeders I was interested in. The listings are on the DPCA page here: https://dpca.org/longevity/

Keep in mind that right now, waiting lists for puppies are getting longer, as people seem to have decided that NOW is the right time for a puppy. Many breeders are getting ten times the inquiries they used to get, so patience will be key. It's absolutely worth it to find the right puppy from the right breeder, though!

I'm so sorry for your loss. He was so young and died under such unexpected circumstances. How absolutely heartbreaking. My deepest condolences.

I also recommend looking at the DPCA site. I second MeadowCat's guidance on how to search for breeders with long-lived dogs.

You might also want to get in touch with DPC chapters in your area. I found three in Ohio; one each in Columbus, Greater Dayton, and Miami Valley. They should be contacts for more local-to-you-breeders.

Thank you everyone. I reached out to Kalora Dobermans in NY (seemed to have many Dobermans listed for longevity) and waiting to hear back. In the meantime, my husband found Suribachi Dobermans in Texas. Does anyone have any feedback on either?

Is Suribachi the former von Wolfz breeder? If so, I'd skip over that, personally.
