That sounds like someone who has bred two fairly random Dobermans together without much research into their backgrounds. There are a lot of reasons I'd personally look elsewhere for a Doberman. I would want a breeder who knows the lineage of their dogs really well - Dobermans aren't a terribly healthy breed. If the breeder hasn't thoughtfully researched the dogs they are breeding together, they probably don't know the health history very well, either, so they don't really know the health in that pedigree. With high rates of DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) in our breed, as well as cancer, do you want to take the risk of having two dogs with lots of dogs who have died young, had heart issues or cancer in the pedigree? Health can be very genetic. I really want a breeder that can tell me about each dog in the pedigree for five, six, or seven generations - how old did they live? What health issues did they have? What did they die of? I'm looking for dogs that lived hopefully until 10+ if I can get it.

Additionally, remember that genetics are very strong when it comes to your puppy's temperament. It's not all in how you raise them! And temperament isn't even just about your puppy's parents, either...it's about the dogs "behind" them. I want a breeder who is carefully matching two dogs together to make sure they are creating dogs that have correct Doberman temperaments. I want a dog I can trust, that isn't shy, or anxious. I want a dog I can take places. A dog I can trust with kids, with my friends. But I also want a Doberman, not a lab, or a sheltie, or, or...so I need a breeder that understands what they are breeding.

I want my Doberman to look like Dobermans should. I want my Doberman to have the correct structure, so that they don't have knee problems. I want them to be able to run and play into their old age. All of these things are things that careful, ethical breeders are doing when they breed for the breed standard.

I also need someone that I can contact when I have a question, or I need support. Good, careful breeders are like that.

Here are some really good things to read on how to look for a good breeder: https://www.dobermantalk.com/breeding-breeders/303917-champion-lines-other-red-flags.html

I would start your search for a breeder by looking at the DPCA website. www.dpca.org - click on "Breeders"

Sounds like a BYB. Most reputable breeders brag about health testing not about their lines. It's assumed the puppies come from "incredible bloodlines" and are AKC registered.

I would suggest going to the DPCA website and going to the breeder referral page and, on the same website, look for the local chapter clubs and call around, they may know someone having a litter that's not posted on the site.

No worries! Sometimes people are typing at the same time :D Plus, when we're thinking the same things, it's probably for a good reason, huh???
