Breeder recommendation for Ohio?

Can anyone recommend a good breeder they are familiar with in Ohio. I’ve rescued for years and would like to find a breeder this time. I lost my 9 year old rescue boy in August, to osteosarcoma. Had him since he was 11 weeks old. I miss him so much!

Welcome to DT! There are 4 DPCA chapter clubs in Ohio and I would recommend starting there. Their contact information can be found on The DPCA | Chapter Clubs

In Ohio I can recommend Mirabel, Silhouette, Protocol off the top of my head.
There are several others in Ohio as well as surrounding states. Your best bet is really reaching out to chapter clubs or go to some local akc shows to talk face to face. Show season is about to pick up!

You may need to expand your search to surrounding states. We have a multitude of back yard breeders masquerading as reputable breeders in our fair state. The three mentioned above are excellent, but don't breed often. Your best bet is to network. Where are you located in Ohio? Central, North or South?

Did you make contact with any of the dobe Clubs in Ohio? If you need help looking for shows we can help.

I can't find that breeder at all.

I'd really encourage you to connect with the local chapter club, and get connected with the local good breeders, or to reach out to any of the breeders that Greenkouki mentioned. Even if they aren't planning litters, they are likely to know someone who is. Sometimes going a little farther for the right dog is a great decision. It's so much better to find a breeder that is breeding dogs thoughtfully, who knows the dogs in their lines, what their health is, what their temperaments are like, who will be a good, supportive breeder for you.

I found a puppy out of Briarwood Kennel. He is a ‘popsicle pup’,
un-cropped, and about 12 weeks. I’ve just seen pictures and he’s beautiful, but had to have his tail tweaked. Gorgeous little face! He comes from a litter of one. I’ve rescued for my last two, and my first was from Dawn Ri Honaker’s Kennel. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have experience with her but I know several members have dogs from her here on DT. For me the un cropped ears would be a no-go since I would want a show quality dog but that would be up to you. What health testing has been done and what's the pedigree?

I know a few people that have owned Briarwood dogs and been happy. Besides what GK asked, my concerns would be about being a singleton litter. Singletons can have some special circumstances that need addressing as they grow to get proper developmental socialization. Singleton pups can be overly pushy and mouthy, less frustration tolerance, and have even fewer social skills with other dogs due to the lack of littermates, so I'd personally want to know what the breeder did to help counteract that. Just my opinion.

And I'm not sure what it means when you say he had to have his tail "tweaked" but along with what Meadowcat just said about social skills and singelton litters I'll add that there are also sometimes in singleton litters physical problems (sometimes genetic and sometimes occurring because something had gone awry prepartum and other puppies had been absorbed).

In general I'd avoid buying a pup from a singleton litter.

And was this 12 week old puppy you say "was out of Briarwood" and uncropped? Was it actually bred by Briarwood? I thought they cropped all their puppies before they were sold? Maybe this was a puppy with Briarwood lines but not actually bred by Briarwood?

Good luck but something here isn't adding up--like there's a missing bit of information about this puppy.

Thank you all for the information. This puppy’s tail wasn’t docked quit the way Linda wanted it, so it was just at the vet to be redone. My concern is it will bother him in the future, however I don’t know. Linda isn’t able to whelp litters any longer, so has someone else that is for her. The bitch is her dog, and the sire was one of her dogs, although belonged to someone else. The puppiy is from frozen sperm, and Father would be his grandfather. I don’t have a copy of the linage, but we spoke of it over the phone. He’s with a family and small kids... as the photos show, he’s all over them playing. I found the Kennel while researching and called. I’m getting a bit nervous since there seems to be so many variables.... singleton puppy, hasn’t been cropped, ( I don’t mind), tail may be a bit long, ( can’t tell from the photo) or not. The generations before have lived from 9-11 years old. He’s not cheap, but not as expensive as he would be cropped. (That’s not an issue.) I’m just looking for a healthy,
good temperament, smart dog. I’ve trained a feral GSD mix puppy, an unsocialized Belgium Sheepdog puppy, and two rescued Dobermans. I sent a message to my local Breed Club. This will be my last puppy for sure, and maybe my last dog, so I want to get it right. Thank you and any thoughts are greatly appreciated. I am supposed to travel to pick him up Friday, so I have to decide ASAP.

I'm with you - I personally wouldn't take a singleton puppy, either, but that's me. Too risky with the issues.

I was about to go ahead and take this puppy tomorrow the 17th and got a call he has diarrhea and vomiting. I asked what the vet said but wasn’t told as they didn’t know yet. He’s in another state and were to meet me in Ohio. I think he’s out of Briarwood lines through the Dad. It’s not looking good and I think I should pass. Thank you so much. CDPC didn’t know of any breeders with litters. I’ll keep searching.... cute as he is.

Probably a good idea to pass on this one. I do hope that the pup doesn't have parvo and that he makes it through though.

He’s had his shots so I don’t think that’s the problem. I just hope he’s ok and it’s nothing serious. He comes out of a great line of dogs. You just never know! My last was an 11 week old rescue, never sick (but for a few skin breakouts over the years) until at 9, from osteosarcoma. Thank you for your help.

Thank you all for your information and help. The puppy I was hoping would work out.... died! I’m told he passed from a new strain of Parvo, which was mentioned in post to me. I’ve been searching for a puppy from a breeder this time. I just read a post here about a terrible breeder in Va and WV, Canis Maximus. To look at their website, and you would think it’s a great kennel. So happy I found Dobermantalk!!!

I’m so sad this little guy died!!! The breeder was heartbroken, and it truly breaks my heart! I lost my boy to osteosarcoma (got him from a rescue at 11weeks) this Aug. He was the sweetest, and healthiest fellow one could ask for all those 9 years. IDK....maybe I should rescue again. I’m longing to love, and be loved, by another Doberdog once more! 😥

I'm really sorry to hear about the puppy.

For you, and for anyone reading along, I want to share my story about my recent search for our new purebred kittens. I think it's a fantastic illustration about what people might experience in the "dog world" even though there are slight differences between purebred cats and purebred dogs...

I researched breeds and figured out what we wanted. I found the breeder we wanted to go with and filled out her application on her website. I didn't hear back from her. This is the point at which a lot of buyers might get frustrated and just step away. But I know better - I followed up! This is where you need to make a phone call or reach out through another medium. I followed her on FB, so I dropped her a message to say, hey, did you get our application? Turns out she did and thought she'd responded...the response was sitting unsent in her outbox. She could have lost a great home and I could have lost a great breeder.

Next, we heard the wait could be up to 2 years. Long wait, right? This breed has small litters, and it's fairly rare. We could have walked away...maybe looked for a different breeder. Maybe bought from someone less ethical, or, who knows. But we said, okay. We actually went to some cat shows. We got to meet her in person. We talked with her a lot at the show, got to know her. Met her cats. Talked a LOT about what we were looking for, what she was breeding for, what her goals were. We knew she was the right breeder for us, so we thought hey, no hurry. We can be patient. We kept in touch. We were active on her FB page, interacting with her. We got a call about six months later that she had the right kittens for us (littermates in kittens are okay - not in dogs!).

All this to say...there are lots of places that little "glitches" seem to be hangups, sometimes, but staying persistent, reaching out to the chapter clubs, finding the breeder you want and keeping in touch, etc...it pays off. I've seen it happen in dogs, too. I know it seems like a lot of work, but when you have that great dog in the end, it truly is worth it.

How tragic that this puppy died. I have to say, this whole story sounded fishy that Linda was basically brokering this uncropped puppy from an owner in another state.
If you decide to explore the rescue route again, Hand Me Down Dobes has their monthly adoption event the second Saturday of every month in Lewis Center. Hand Me Down Dobes, Doberman Rescue, Ohio Doberman rescue, HMDD
If you want to seek out a well bred puppy from a reputable breeder from fully tested parents, I second that you would benefit from getting involved or at the least, networking with members of the Columbus Doberman Pinscher Chapter Club. There are members who are active in conformation, agility, rally and obedience. Their meetings are the first Wednesday of every month. https://dpcco.org/?fbclid=IwAR3-CQDb...W7gMZUF7k6kvJ4
