Questions about Judy Bingham (Electra)

Hello all, I am looking for a pup and Judy Bingham lives not too far from me. In my research on her and her kennel, it sounds like the consensus is people love her dogs, as for her.... not so much. What is the issue people have ? Is she rude? Outspoken ? Etc. I’m just trying to figure out what about her would prevent me from getting a dog from her. Please share your experience .

As with anyone, there are people you get along with and people you don't. You either click or you don't. If she's close, is doing all proper health testing and titling before breeding, you get along, and you feel comfortable with her contract then why not?

Have you owned Dobes in the past? What were you planning to do with your Dobeman? Doesn't sound like you have even talked to Ms Bingham at all and that's the first thing you should do.

And I don't know how active Judy is as a breeder any more--she is still a member of the DPCA, listed as a breeder and may still be actually breeding but I haven't seen any Electra dogs in the show ring lately and that was always her primary aim as a breeder.

Not everyone loves the Electra dogs. In recent years not all that many people have seen much less owned an Electra dog. As far as what might prevent you from getting an Electra dog I think you really need to talk to Judy about the possibility of doing that. In the past she has been very choosey about just who she will sell to.

While this may be a good thing sometimes it isn't but the only way to find out is to contact her directly and ask about availability. The next step would be to ask if you can make an appointment to see the puppies if she has any available.

Good luck with your search for a Doberman puppy.

She isn't in my area, so I've only ever seen Judy on line. Have not seen an electra Dobe in person .... probably ever as we are not in the same geographic area. I've seen plenty of them in pictures.

As I'm a show person, I continue to interact with my breeder for the life of the dog... .and often beyond. I need to like the breeder. There are some people that I would never by a dog from no matter how much I like the dogs.

What GK and MaryJo said...

There are plenty of breeders out there that breed dogs I like, but I wouldn't necessarily buy a dog from them, just because we don't "click" as people, and that's perfectly okay. Other people feel differently and don't want the same experience with their breeder.

For me, personally, I really enjoy having a certain kind of relationship with my breeder. I want to feel comfortable messaging, or emailing, or heck, calling them if I need to. I still remember messaging Mary pretty late at night one night when Richter had an emergency room visit and I thought he'd have to have emergency surgery...she chatted with me back and forth because I was a wreck. I could have called her, no question. I love having a breeder that is proud no only of our accomplishments that are titles, but also of just our "what a great dog" moments. I like being able to ask questions about the breed, and learn more. I want a breeder that I can ask questions about dogs way back in the pedigree. I like knowing about what's going on with my dogs' siblings, and parents, and grandparents....

Other people may not care about that...it's really to each their own, but I do really recommend that you figure out what YOU want in a breeder and what matters to you, because the person that bred your dog is (theoretically) in your life for about the next decade, so it should be someone you can at least tolerate

Just a note, you don't have to be a wreck for me to chat back and forth - lol. Any time is good. ;-)

For the original poster, I contacted Judy once way back when for some info on her dogs as some were in a pedigree of my dog, and I recall that she answered my questions, and that was fine.

However, I've seen her post some pretty nasty and heinous things on Doberman groups and read some articles she has written with some *very* different views from mine that would give me pause to consider her as a breeder of a dog for myself. But that's me. I wouldn't put geographical distance at the top of my list when considering a breeder. Maybe on the list? But not #1. Again, just me.

I don't much agree with Judy Bingham about Dobermans--and I've been in her general area (Southern California) and on the west coast (not quite so general area) and on a variety of doberman lists and forums with Judy and I used to say that she wasn't someone to send a potential novice owner to. I still think that's true.

That was why I specifically asked the OP if he'd ever had a Dobe and what he intended to do with his Dobe (Judy tends to believe that there are only conformation dogs and is not a polite as she could be to novices).

Also I really believe that for the most part any one getting their first Doberman is probably better off going to a relatively local breeder (Mary, you are a known perfect example of a breeder who helps her new owners and is available to them) who can often help with all kinds of stuff that comes up in the life of a Doberman from puppyhood to old age.

Aw, thanks. Coincidently, just got home from visiting Wicca (and Richter's!) sister, Lola, and then over to see Copper's brother, nearly 11 year old Sammy who is recovering well from cruciate surgery. Their lovely owners fussed when I told them not to. I got home-made chicken noodle soup and a lobster roll (!!!) at Lola's, and chocolate cake for dessert at Sammy's along with a bottle of wine sent home for hubby. (I'm still salivating thinking about the delicious dinner meadowcat made when we visited them in Minnesota!) My owners are the best!

Mary, is was great seeing you today and nice to meet Svetlana, too bad you couldn't stay long. You're one special lady and I feel so lucky that we got together when I was looking for a puppy. Every time I needed you're help you were always there for me, through the years we have become good friends and I'm so thankful for that, love you my friend. Lexi is sleeping like a little Angel.
