Breeders?

Hello! I am currently looking for a breeder. It has been suggested I check out Freedom Dobermans in south Carolina. They seem to have good bloodlines and good health checks. Has anyone dealt with them or have a puppy from them? Or can you suggest good breeder? I have been looking and looking, and it seems everytime I Think I find a breeder, there are complaints about them and I dont know what to do.... TIA Crazykat330

That is not a breeder I would buy from, based on the information on their website. There is no health testing information available and I don't see them doing anything with their dogs other than breeding them (probably mainly to make money).

The DPCA.org breeder referral is a great starting place. Are you in the Carolinas?

Not a breeder I would buy from, nor one I would recommend to anyone else. You might want to do some research here on Kimbertal.

GK’s suggestion of the DPCA breeder list is a good one. Also, going to some shows and talking to people is a good idea.

ok. I thought they sounded good as they claimed they did a lot of the health testing, etc. I have family and friends down south. we are in jersey. I saw a GORGEOUS young male recently and they said the breeder is from waretown, nj. when I looked up the breeder I saw complaints about him not testing his dogs for DCM. (I lost my beautiful girl at 5yrs old from DCM and I am still heartbroken & so afraid of getting a pup with a problem again) But then I read people who swear by this breeder in nj

If I were you, I'd contact the chapter clubs in NC and Atlanta for breeder referrals.
Doberman Pinscher Club of Charlotte ? Charlotte, NC Doberman Club
ADPC Home

They'll point you in the direction of ethical, reputable breeders who health test AND title in at least one venue (this means they do more than just keep their dogs as housepets).

Avoid anyone producing Kimbertal pedigreed animals. Kimbertal is a very clean, very shiny puppy mill.

Fort Mill, which is pretty much Charlotte. If you are looking at this area I can recommend a few breeders that are close by.

Folks moving south is why this area is so booming!

Hi! Sorry for such long delay in response! I couldnt get logged in!! lol. all cleared up now! I know fort Mill. Family in Rock Hill- so you are neighbors! So looking for a house AND a puppy! puppy first as house might take a while. I am just looking for a nice, healthy, female Dobie. I prefer larger size if at all possible. (HAD a great dane at one point who we loved, because family thought dobies were too vicious..... lol. yeah. ok. My beautiful dobie finally proved them wrong!) My head is spinning with breeders. Every time I think I have found one I get bad comments/reviews. The breeder I decided on wont take names for a pup till summer of 2019...... I dont mind traveling south for a good pup. thanks for listening to me babel! crazykat330

You will be so happy in the end that you took the time to research breeders and wait for just the right puppy. Put emotions aside for now - that can come later.
I am so glad you are trying to do the right thing. Keep us up to date on your research.

There are some great breeders in NJ & SE/central PA. I'd look at Sharjet and Kerwyn in South Jersey. Jalyn, Caleb, and a bunch more in PA.
The suggestion to go to some shows is an excellent idea - find shows on infodog.com

There is a 4 day show at the TD Convention Center in Greenville this coming Thursday through Sunday. Show schedule for Dobermans as follows;
Thursday - 9:00am - Ring 4
Friday - 10:00am - Ring 4
Saturday - 9:30am - Ring 2
Sunday - 8:00am - Ring 4

Fairly large entry and most of the local breeders will be in attendance. I am in SC as well (near Greenville). Good luck with your search!

My best advice is to go slow, don't be in a rush, and be willing to be patient and wait for a puppy. When you are excited and feel ready it's SO hard to do that, but the easiest way to get sucked into buying a puppy from a bad breeder is to fall into the trap of "they have puppies NOW" and then you let your excitement take over and your research goes out the window.

This is a good read on what good breeders do: https://dpca.org/BreedEd/buying-a-doberman-pinscher/

It's *excellent* advice to attend a dog show - good breeders show their dogs, and you'll find great connections there. Not all good breeders have websites and you won't necessarily find them online. Mary Jo recommended some above, and Shelly gave you the show times for this weekend. Rosemary's link to the local chapter clubs of the DPCA are another great resource - the local chapter clubs generally know who is breeding in the area - who to avoid, and the good breeders are also generally active in the clubs.

Reach out to all of those resources and you'll get a great puppy!

If you're up in New Jersey right now and want to look at breeders up there, you can go to shows up in that area.

There are quite a few breeders up in that area with great Dobermans who breed for health, longevity and temperament.

One that I'd recommend contacting would be Laura Jones of Caleb Dobermans: https://calebdobe.com/

There are decent sized shows the weekend of August 10th in Harrisburg PA, this coming weekend at Bloomsburg PA (a pretty small entry though).

I believe the entry in Dobes at Bloomsburg this weekend is a total of 12

Not sure what the entry is at Harrisburg in August yet - those entries just closed yesterday.

Very happy with my 8 month old pup from breeder in NC (Charlotte). Well worth the time with the application describing background/wants, time talking on phone and meeting breeder and seeing pups. Great match - Loki has a wonderful temperament for our family (2 kids, 2 cats and 1 parrot)

Breeder does health testing and provides pedigrees so you will have family history.

Good luck with your search!

Looks like Loki might be from Schohaus (from their details section it says Loki is Schohaus Absolute Veneration). Their page is here: Schohaus Dobermans ? Home of the Beautiful Doberman. Looks like they have a litter planned very soon.

I would have a puppy from John. If you are going to be in the area he's a good person to talk to whether you get a puppy from him or not.

yes Loki is from Schohaus - I have been traveling out of the country so not on the forum over the last month- sorry! Second Greenkouki's comments about talking to John.

There is also a show coming up in Raleigh at the end of the month/beginning of September based on my AKC Pupdate email (I'll see if I can find the details)
