Looking for a Breeder in the Houston/Austin Texas Area

Hello Everyone,

Long time lurker, recent member!

My girlfriend and I are both teachers moving to Austin for new jobs and renting a house with a large backyard in the area. She has a female pug rescue who's about 3-4 years old (great with everyone, all dogs, and puppies). My new position will give me much more free time and I finally feel like I have the stability and means to properly and responsibly raise a puppy. I have experience with dobies, my family had two from when I was in junior high to college. I've been fostering pitties for a rescue in Houston for the last four year as well so I have experience with large breeds.

I'm looking for a family pet and a companion to go on hikes and hop in the truck and go on adventures with. Potentially to do some agility courses and other physically/mentally stimulating challenges. I don't intend to do any shows.

I've gotten a hold of Merrimac Dobermans and they seem really nice, but they won't have a litter until late August and I was hoping to be able to get the puppy at the beginning of July before school starts so I can dedicate a lot of time to raising and training him for about a month and a half before my schedule gets crazier. I also called Touchstone Dobermans but have not heard back.

I'm new to the breeder market. They said they charge $3000 for a puppy. I'm happy to pay for a quality dog, but that seems like a lot. Forgive me if I'm simply ignorant. (I know a quality tested puppy could prevent vet bills from piling up down the road too and ensure proper temparment).

Do you guys have any recommendation for breeders in those areas? I'd be willing to drive to Dallas if you guys know anyone great up there as well.

Welcome to DT. The doberman pinscher club of Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston would be great starting off points. To get a puppy in your time schedule may require traveling far, or you can be patient and wait for a local breeder to have puppies. Doberman puppies are expensive. It costs a lot to show, title, and health test the dam, pay a stud fee to the sire's owner, and whelp the litter and then have the ears and tails done on the puppies. This is why a puppy from a reputable breeder is $2500+ .

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately the Doberman Pinscher Club of Houston website is very out of date. I called the woman listed as the breeder referral contact to get some info on local breeders. She gave me a few names, but said she wasn't sure who all is still breeding or not (I've only successfully reached one breeder). I would be willing to travel 6 hrs or so.

That's probably about right for cost. You might try contacting Aura Dobes - I think she is expecting a litter.

I really, really encourage you to be willing to be flexible on your timeline and/or the range you are willing to travel. It is SO worth it for a puppy from a great breeder.

My girl is from Sirai Dobermans down near Houston. She doesn't have a litter planned soon, but she would be a good resource to contact - she is active in the club down there and shows her dogs. She could help you get in touch with people nearby. Getting out to a show and meeting people in person would be a great way to figure out who you "click" with and whose dogs you like.

Hi Acswan!

Just my 2 cents:

If I wanted a pup from the breeder of our last three boys...

I would definitely expect to be put on a wait list for maybe up to a year. Patience is a virtue when bringing a Doberman pup into a household. And we are a known Doberman family to them.

If and when I am quoted a price of $3000, I would not blink an eye.

Of course, I am familiar with the breeder and her dogs.

Best to you and your search.

Thank you all for the feedback and taking it easy on a newbie. I was wondering about having to be wait listed but figured I'd check with a few breeders first. If I end up having to wait a little longer, so be it.

I tried calling Charlene at Sirai but didn't get an answer, I'll call back and leave a message in a bit to see if she can point in the right direction or advise me on my next step.

Again, thank you all for your guidance. I truly appreciate it and hope to be able to join the Dobie family again soon!

Howdy from San Antonio! My girl came from Judy King at Sunking Dobermans. She doesn't have a website but is on Facebook and her # is on the DPCA breeder page. Not sure what her breeding plans are this year but she is a fantastic breeder and we still speak regularly. I got a dog and a friend when I went with Sunking!

While I didn't pay $3K for my girl, that was 6 years ago and my price tag wasn't much less, so that may be what you're looking at these days. We also have a really great dobe rescue - Here if that's something you'd like to consider.

Welcome!

I'm eager to start networking and getting to know folks before I make the purchase. I've searched FB for her but haven't found anything. Could you please DM me her phone number so I can give her a ring?

Welcome from a neighbor up north! My boys breeder is out in Pearland. He's a Merrimac. I cannot speak highly enough of Nikki. She is like family to me now.

I spoke with Nikki on the phone two days ago and really enjoyed our conversation. She seems like a knowledgeable and passionate breeder - I'm hoping to be able to have time to visit her to meet her and her dogs in the near future. She says she's hoping to have a litter around the end of June ready for delivery in August or so. I'm really crossing my fingers to be able to get the puppy at the beginning of July so I can be home with him for a month and a half to spend quality time bonding and developing good habits before the school year starts back up.

Listen, I don't mean to be a downer, but right now you don't even have a place to live that takes Dobermans (https://www.dobermantalk.com/doberman...ml#post4012434). I think your timeline is really unrealistic. To get on the list for a good breeder, you need to be able to show that you have housing that allows Dobermans. I just think it would be smart to slow down and wait until you actually have everything in place to be in a position to be the right home for a pup so that you will be approved.

You're absolutely correct. I'm not placing any deposits or committing to purchasing right now. I simply wanted to start looking and networking with knowledgeable professionals and owners now so hopefully in the future when I feel comfortable purchasing, I know how to pursue those options and have an experienced support base to draw upon. I WILL NOT get a dog if I am not in a position to properly support him/her. I've fostered too many dogs who have been dropped at shelters or needed rehoming due to poor planning to make the same mistake myself. I appreciate your concern, but please rest assured that I will not get a dobie without appropriate and concrete accommodations.

If I happen to find the right housing situation in the future, a breeder has a litter available at the right time, and all things work out, then I will consider.

Nikki in particular can be a real stickler about housing. I sent her a video walk-through of our house as part of our agreement [I picked up Strife a little earlier than originally planned and we were still in the apt for about 2 weeks.] The deal was that I wouldn't have to drive an extra 900 miles 2 weeks later but I HAD to send her that walk-through. If you're local-ish, she *will* ask for a home check.

Beyond that, she's amazing and I absolutely adore her. You can catch her at shows all the time! You'll probably meet me and Strife too.

As a foster, I understand the importance of vetting people and ensuring their home is a suitable environment for a dog so I do not mind providing her with proof of a good home at all. Sounds like people have nothing but great things to say about them!

I’m also looking for a stud to breed with my darling, mocha. She’ll be a year old July 4th/2018. I’m just a 21 year old girl who lives alone with her as my roommate and best friend, I also go to school. I’d like for her to have a son of her own to raise and keep her company. I say son because, even though I love her with all my heart and she saved my life, I always wanted a boy. So I’m hoping for a grandson. Not saying I should do this NOW, but eventually. Thank you

As far a breeding goes, it's a lot more involved that just "boy dog + girl dog = puppies". This thread has some good information. https://www.dobermantalk.com/breeding...-breeders.html

As far as Merrimac Dobermans and the price. Breeders who show and do all the health testing put a lot into their dogs to make sure you have a quality pup. So what is it you should expect to get for your hard earned $3000? Besides having a better chance at a healthy dog that has a higher probability of conforming to the breed standard. And here is also the thing when you buy from a top breeder you get top dogs. Strife didn't start hitting the ring till just fairly recently after doing obedience. That is the hard order changing from obedience to conformation. And he is doing well, very impressive boy. several others in that same litter are also doing well in the show ring. put it this way. Every pup from that litter that has showed is either a champion or well on their way. One exception is one who was being owner handled and the owner died and the pup went on to family members.
Have a look at Strife, that is quality. His sister who started showing at 6 months is now GCH Merrimac's Mirage For MI Casa BCAT she will be going back out in the ring this next week as well as working further on titles behind her name. You can check her out at https://www.facebook.com/MikkiMirage/
