I need of a Recommended Breeder New York (NY)

Hey guys First time here, been researching this page but I thought I’d post for myself. Thanks in advance!

Let me start out by saying I’m a 24 year old male who’s very active And “fitness minded” been a huge dog lover for 24 years now haha. Specifically a huge Doberman lover.

I started looking now for years but haven’t pulled the trigger into taking one home. I grew up around medium-large dog breeds so that’s not an issue, I know what it takes to raise a dog and I’m ready.

With all that aside I’ve been looking at Lancaster Puppies, it where the average joe has some puppies and posts them. And right when I think I found the perfect one for me I noticed it is already 9 weeks old and ears are not cropped (as I would love my Doberman’s ears to be cropped). As I researched more about the cut off time I think I am cutting it close as I would like the medium show cut preferably. I don’t want to have a bad crop job so I decided I might have to pass on this great opportunity. (Yes I know the ears not being cropped shouldn’t decide if I bring the dog home or not but I’ve wanted this a long time and its what I truly want)

So if I do decide to pass this up I would need some dog breeders that come recommended by you all with experience with dobies. I’m in New York I can go to breeders that are anywhere with in a days drive going and coming. Please help me out on breeders and cropping ears would it be a risk if I were to bring home the 9 week old ( keep in mind he will be about 10 when I actually bring him home and if te appointment takes some time it can stretch to possibly 11 - 12 weeks. Thanks so much

Welcome to DT.

Lancaster Puppies is a broker site, and not a place a good breeder would list their puppies.

Have you looked at the Doberman Pinscher Club of America's breeder list? That is a much better starting point. DPCA | The Doberman | Breeder Referral

Yeah... What Rosemary said. Don't buy a Doberman (or any pup) from a broker. You want to deal with a reputable breeder. Someone who titles their dogs and does serious medical screening.

Good breeders are not puppy mills. You may need a bit of patience and be willing to get put on a waiting list.

Trust me, It will be worth it.

Personally, I am not familiar with Doberman breeders in NY. All my boys have come from the West coast.

I am sure that someone here can point you in the proper direction, but in the end... It is up to you to do the research and make the decisions.

Best to you. Stay in touch.

Guh, run FAR away from Lancaster Puppies. They almost exclusively sell puppies from the Amish mills, and use nice words to make them seem like they're just some rando's accidental litter. I've worked with a number of puppies sold through Lancaster, and almost all of them were puppy mill puppies with serious temperament issues. Just...don't do this. Please.

FORTUNATELY, you're in an area with FANTASTIC breeders nearby. Whereabouts are you in NY?

I am the sea witch. I am the tide you fear and the turning you can't deny. I am the sound of the waves running over your bones on the beach, little man, and I am not amused at finding you on my doorstep.

Thank you that is why I mentioned that in here I knew someone would have some experience and knowledge on Lancaster. I’m actually in Brooklyn but as I mentioned the time it takes to get somewhere doesn’t bother me if I can get there and back within 24 hours I’ll take the drive.
I’d love to be pointed in a few right directions. Thank you

I'd start with the breed clubs. Long Island DPC and DPC of the Tappan Zee are the two New York clubs (to my knowledge). Their contact info can be found here: The DPCA | Chapter Clubs

Do you know what your plans are for the dog? Are you looking for a working bred dog or a show bred dog?

Don’t plan on any shows, more for just a companion and more importantly a guard and for protection

Okay. Show BRED dogs aren't necessarily show dogs, they just come from breeders who show. The two clubs I mentioned have show breeders, for sure.

If you're willing to go a little further afield, I know Sharjet/Sharon Marinelli breeds phenomenal dogs with great temperament. She's down in NJ.

Considering how close you were to making a decision to buy from a broker, I hope you will slow down and spend some time on this resource so that you can make a more informed decision.

I too am from NY (Eastern LI) and I search high and low for over a year and finally decided on very reputable show breeder in TX, Sunburg Dobermans. I was not looking to show but rather a pet/OB/Pro dog. I was on the waiting list for Joannes Disney Litter and got very lucky getting Orange Boy who was slated for a show home. Joanne or Jana may be able to point you in the right direction for a breeder with a litter. Also, I know there is another breeder on Long Island, I belive in Holbrook. Very nice dogs.
Good luck and no matter what, stick with a REPUTABLE breeder. Before pulling the trigger, share the breeder here and get feedback. This site is great in helping make a decision.
