Congratulations on that. Curious how the diversity pairing works and rates on this scale. Do they look at inbreeding, outcrossing, linebreeding, colors, how many champions produced, structure? What does it tell you. Is it done through DNA, pedigrees, pictures? I am so curious. Do I go to UCDavis to look up the info?

It is done through DNA. Not sure I can explain it very well, but basically it looks at how related a given dog is to the rest of the breed. On Better Bred one can do test breedings between 2 dogs and the pairing is rated on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being identical twins and 10 being unrelated.

You can find more information about it here: https://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/services/dog/CanineGeneticDiversity.php

Thrilling....

We used to get pups (dogs) very 3-5 years. When my son started getting Dobes years ago, I got a reprieve.

McCoy is almost 3 1/2. I see things like this and I get serious "Puppy Fever".

Ugh... Someone smack me!

Beautiful sire and dam.

Congratulations!!!

I'm on the puppy pictures wagon too!

I went to love on my puppy this morning, and I swear he is a foot taller from last night. Lol. I couldn't believe how big he was when I watched him eating breakfast. It happens so fast!!

I'll be very interested to see the results of this breeding--handsome dog--I'm going looking for more info on him and like MeadowCat I've always thought Fame was a gorgeous girl.

PS just went and looked Irish up--man he's got some old,oid breeding on his sires side--some of of my favorites--Concrete Cowboy for one.

Quite a lot of longevity as well and Fames side has some good old breeding too...

Mmmmmmmm--really can't wait to see these result!

That old, old breeding and longevity are what drew me to him originally. He is also a very nice dog.

They both have great temperaments. I liked that Irish was fierce when I arrived, but when told "OK" shut it off, came over to say hello and beg for pets. Fame is the same way. Madge is in her 80's so didn't do much performance stuff with Irish, however, he did get his RN. Fame has not earned any titles in performance, however, she has been trained for obedience, nosework and we have played at agility. After this litter, we will do a refresher and start obtaining titles on the backside. She has been awesome to train, super smart and biddable.

Out of curiosity, where'd they fall as far as internal relatedness, and on the outlier index, if you are inclined to share?

Personally, I think it's awesome that you factored this particular research tool into your decision. Between considering older lines and making an effort at diversity, your mindset is most definitely progress in the right direction.

Happy to share. Would have loved to find a 10 with all the right stuff, but Fame is tough, she is vWD Affected, Carries Ding and Dilution. Really limits ones choices. I do get a lot of "why would you breed her" questions. But the reality is she is a very nice bitch, great temperament, good longevity (her Dam was PTS just a few days ago 2 months shy of her 15th birthday) and health in her pedigree and breeding away from vWD, Dings and Dilution isn't difficult. That said, I had already decided to use him before the UCD diversity testing came available (or at least before I knew about it). I actually asked Marge if I could diversity test him, and was thankful that she agreed.

It's always nice when the data is supportive of your choice & intuition, even if it wasn't a factor in the choice when you made it.

Folks are really up in others' business. It's really refreshing to see sound rationale along with the compromises, rather than compromises stacked on compromises on a choice that isn't even trying for a reward outside a bland, mainstream pairing involving today's most popular lines. I've been known to say things to the effect that "it seems like there are better choices," but the diversity numbers are much nicer than average if I remember their interpretation.

Congratulations!!!

I'm on the puppy pictures wagon too!

I went to love on my puppy this morning, and I swear he is a foot taller from last night. Lol. I couldn't believe how big he was when I watched him eating breakfast. It happens so fast!!
Just wait till he's 75 lbs and rumbling through the house like a Clydesdale (sp?) on uppers!

SheilanDobe - Congrats on the litter! Can't wait to see photos!
ShelianDobe and TallStef like this.

Congrats! That's really exciting. I see a LOT of things I like in both of these dogs, and longevity in both lines is something we should all be looking for. So is diversity, although I've had that debate with a lot of people who don't agree.

Absolutely can't wait for puppy pics. <3
