Breeders Near Sacramento

Hello,

Can anyone point me in the direction of a reputable breeder near the Sacramento, CA area. We have also looked at local rescues with not much luck.

We are interested in purchasing a Dobe as a family dog. We have children and a cat. We are looking for a new member in our family and are NOT interested in breeding or showing/competitions.

I did find one breeder called Cartoon Pets (http://www.mycartoonpets.com/Home.html). Has anyone had any experience with them?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Please keep looking. This is not the type of breeder I would recommend. I am sure the people on this forum can give you some good suggestions and tell you want to look for in a good breeder. Good luck on your puppy search!

Whereabouts in the Sac area are you located? I lived just east in the foothill area, Cameron Park

I wish you luck in your search! Perhaps look in to Von Luka Dobermans, they have an account on this forum (in the future if we ever decide to get another Dobie pup, we plan to check them out )

Phantomwolf, any particular reason as to why you would not recommend this breeder? I would like to ensure that I am capturing all the "beware" signs when browsing online. Thanks !

Do you prefer European or american lines?

I'm sure others can refer you to american show line breeders, but if you're interested in Euro dobermans check with Lorna of Incredible Dobes and/or Erynn with Von luka.

I will share what immediately struck me when I entered the website and I am guessing Phantomwolf may have noticed too:

Breeding multiple breeds - it takes a huge amount of time for a reputable/ethical breeder to understand their own line and research lines of other dobermans to find the most suitable match with their bitch, and breed in order to better the breed (health longevity, etc). There is no way in my mind that someone can do that when breeding that many different breeds of dogs.

I did not see any signs of health testing or titling on their dobermans. I saw the most basic of info, which most likely indicates they do not health test or title. Even for a "pet quality" companion pup, you want to stack the odds in your favor and ensure the parents (and multi-generations behind them) have been health tested and titled. This helps to ensure they will produce healthier offspring with sound temperaments. Dobermans are a very unhealthy breed in general, so again, you want to stack the odds in your favor by purchasing from healthtested lines.

Pay pal - I cringe every time I see a breeder offering pay pal. What this tells me is they do not care where they place their puppies and do not adequately screen homes of prospective buyers. They are in it for the $ and willing to sell a puppy to anyone. Ugh.

These are just my very immediate inputs based on a quick glance. I would personally run, run, run...

Just want to add, good for you for doing your research. I second the suggestion to reach out to Von Luka. Even if she does not have pups on the ground or near future, she can probably steer you in the direction of some other more reputable breeders in your area. Also, there are tons of reputable breeders in Oregon and Washington if you are willing to open your search up north.

Good luck!

I just want to point out that the puppies and parents on Cartoon Pet's website are very poor quality, through no fault of their own. The dam of their current litter clearly has some skin issues going on as well, which could be the result of hypothyroidism. I honestly feel really bad for their dogs.

Look at the difference in quality, care, and health of Incredible Doberman's H-litter: Incredible Dobermans Hellions

Puppies have trimmed nails, clear eyes, substance, etc.

If you google "Sacramento Dobermantalk" you should be able to find some threads that refer to breeders in the area. Mostly if you are looking for North American show line, since the Euro breeders (Von Luka, Incredible) have already been mentioned.

I think it's very helpful to learn how to evaluate breeders yourself. Take a read through this thread (https://www.dobermantalk.com/breeding...new-folks.html) and then go back and look again at that breeder's website. What red flags do you see?

The information in this thread will give you a great starting place to look for quality breeders: https://www.dobermantalk.com/breeding...formation.html

Finally, I've found this to be a really helpful read: I don’t want a show dog; I just want a pet.Ruffly Speaking | Ruffly Speaking. There are some other great blog posts on this blog on why it's important to find good breeders.

I'm sure some of our members can direct you to good breeders in your area. You may want to start another thread in this forum with your location listed so people can pass on suggestions.

Thank you everyone for your input thus far. I appreciate your patience and feedback. In hindsight, some of these warning signs were obvious , but I am learning as I go along. I have contacted Von Luka Dobermans and Vom Landgraf Working Dogs (no puppies available ). I have also reached out to Unbreakable Dobermans and Incredible Dobermanns. I am still awaiting responses on that. We would be willing to travel up to OR or NV if anyone knows of a good breeder in those parts. I do not have a preference between American and European. I think both are beautiful and I really just want a Dobe that is a good fit for my family and vice versa.

Thank you Meadow Cat for those useful links.

Thanks

Eve Auch (Irongate) is in Truckee - [email protected]
Incredible and Manorie are in Santa Rosa
Von Luka is in Riverbank, CA (near Modesto)
Vom Landgraf is in Sacramento

Most of these you should be able to google their kennel name + dobermans and get to their website.

Irongate doesn't have a website that I know of, but I've talked with Eve in the past and found her very helpful. Her dogs have good longevity; she was on my list when I was looking.
