Realistically none of my Dobes have ever been able to have soft toys either.
I've got a bunch of soft toys (Agility trials and some Obedience trials give them just for entering a dog.) Those all live on the back of a couch that is off limit to dogs. I've had a couple of cats who will take a toy from time to time and play with it but basically it's only very young puppies who get soft toys. Four months or older--no more soft toys.
My Aussie could have soft toys but he didn't think they were much fun--the ones he couldn't have were anything with a squeaker--he'd work at removing the squeakers and then he was done with the toy. Different strokes...
