The sudden death of my 10 year old dobie a week ago to DCM brought me to this forum. Thank you for the article. It's good to know I'm not the only one struggling with the guilt that her death may be harder than some of my relatives passing. I also had the daunting task of explains to my 3.5 year old where savannah went. Has anyone read "Up In heaven"? It's a good book about a dog who sent his little boy dreams of her to make him feel better. Couldn't get through reading it to my daughter without bawling.

If you have a dog, you will most likely outlive it; to get a dog is to open yourself to profound joy and, prospectively, to equally profound sadness.
