Topic - How observant is your Doberman to YOUR routines?

• Do you think your Doberman knows your normal routines and actions? How well do they observe you and react to your habits?
• Does your Doberman know the difference between a workday and a non-work day? Do they act or behave differently to you?
• By your routine action around the home, do they react to situations which are out of your routine? (Enter/exit the same door, making loud noises, etc)

1. I think Orson knows most of the routines around here. He knows when the kids get home from school that I will be going into the kitchen making dinner soon, he goes into the kitchen and waits on the rug until I join him. He also knows when I set the table that it is time for Daddy so he waits by the front window to watch.

2. I can't say if he knows the difference between work/non work day, but he understands if the kids didn't leave then mommy don't leave either........and he always acts the same either way.

3. Orson knows that we don't normally get phone calls after 9:30 pm. On the occasion that we do, he barks about the phone ringing (which he normally does not do) He also knows that my husband goes to bed between 9-9:30 and if he doesn't then Orson tries to 'politely' remind him by whining that he would like to go to bed now. (he tries with me too, but usually has to settle for DH)

4. Orson does notice anything "new" around the yard. Whether it is friends of the kids that left a skateboard on the porch, or something blown in the yard by accident...........and he must get a full sniff search done before anything else can happen. Back at Halloween, I decorated the front porch while he was in the back yard with hubby. Me and the kids put a "dummie" in the chair, wearing some of my hubby's clothes................when Orson came to the front yard (at 6 months of age) He went absolutely crazy!! Hair out, kicking up grass, snarling.................I had to show him it was a fake before he would calm down!!

Java knows when I put on any type of coat that I (or WE) are going out, and she heads straight for the mudroom. Since hubby is working out of town, when he comes home on weekends she acts as though it's party time, because she knows that she will be taken for long walks in the woods with the other big dogs. All David has to say is "let's go for a walk in the woods with Max" and she bolts to the mudroom to have her car harness and leash put on.

If I do go out of a door that I don't normally enter or exits, she HAS to be right there waiting for me when I come back in.

If something happens outside that isn't part of the routine (ie. FedEx truck), she is on high alert, low growls, some barks, sits right by the window watching every move until the truck leaves the property. I would bet that deer bed down for the night in the forsynthia bushes behind the house, because she heads straight to that end of her fenced-in area, barking the whole time when I let her out at night. If she hears something like a racoon around the house at night she will bark and do a permeter check all around the main floor. Java definitely hears more of what's going on outside the house than I do - and she's my best alarm system.

She's also very protective of HER territory - she will bark if a jogger runs past our house. Not non-stop, just enough to alert me that there has been a potential violation of HER space.

Shoes on--we`re going outside. When my husband is finished eating (dinner only) they run to the cookie jar.

Everyday is fun day--I don`t work. Week-ends more fun--hubby is home so there is more pets to be gotten.

Our routine is always different, we go out different doors, make different noises. They are always on guard and will tell us about it.

They know what is suppose to be outside and will investigate. They will only bark if its another person -deer--the person only happened once--they barked and I told them to come in--it was the Scotts Lawn guy. It shook him up. I told him to call in advance next time.

Yes. He knows he doesn't always go everywhere with me. He waits to be invited.......just as he waits to be invited onto my bed. I have a king sized bed that is on a platform, the mattress is very thick and when Rudi rests his head on the bed with his saaaad saaaad puppy eyes, it is the perfect height for him.
When I am putting on my socks and shoes getting ready to leave in the morning, I'll be sitting in a chair or couch and he sits as close to me as possible waiting on his goodbye kisses.

Yes......Usually on workdays, I am up by 7:30am.....some days earlier, some days later. I get up and shower. Once my shower is done, I usually have to get Rudi up to go out or he has already gotten up during my shower and is waiting patiently sitting in the living room. On weekends/non workdays, Rudi will sleep til 11am or noon or 1 pm.........even if I am up and about.....he is such a lazy a**! On occasion (if I have partied too hard the night before) he will come up to my bed and start his very faint whiney whisper----letting me know he's got to pee. :O)

I almost always use the front door to go in and out. I usually park the main car I drive in the driveway and I keep my "sportscar" in my one car garage that is attached to the house. If for some reason I use the keypad to get into the garage and thenenter into the laundry room....he doesn't know what to do with himself. He hardly ever goes into the kitchen unless I ask him to "come on in" which is attached to the laundry room which is attached to the garage. He doesn't bark unless he sees someone walking their dog down the street or someone unfamiliar to him. Then it is just one bark.....he's not a big barker.......I had to teach him how a few months ago. Crazy dog!

When he sees any of my family members pull up and park in the street he has the biggest wiggle butt......he loves my parents and my older sister and her hubby!

Everything stays pretty much the same. I had a guy over the summer put on a new rolled roof to my solarium so all of his equipment were scattered about along with ladders, etc.........didn't really phase Rudi one bit.

All in all, I guess I really got what I wanted........a dog people feared just because of the breed/size/notariety, but also a big baby at heart. A dog that can sleep in and not be too demanding every single day. He loves to just sit or lay on my small front porch. My house sits up on a hill, so when people walk by they go to the other side of the street. If they only knew what a big lug he is and we have an invisible fence!

Seth knows my routines pretty well. He also knows my actions, especially the difference between just getting dressed and getting dressed to go somewhere. Must be body language.

I don't think so. Seth acts the same way regardless if I'm going to work or going out for a bit. He gets very vocal and whines a lot.

Seth whines very loudly and won't lay down unless I make him.

Seth hides behind me and then darts out to poke whatever it is that's new. I keep control of him if there are strangers around so he doesn't scare them.

I don't think Seth pays attention to that. He reacts by trying to get as close to the "foreign" object or living thing as possible, but will occasionally bark.

During the week when I get up for work she hears my alarm go off. She stretches and greets me at the bedroom door. She leads me to my coffee maker and sits until I finish making it she then goes to the door and I let her out. After she comes in she runs up the stairs and makes sure I go to my PC and check email and news. If I make a stop before I go upstairs she comes down and tries tripping me and looks at the stairs. When we get up there, we have a few minutes of playtime. When she thinks im done reading the news (when she knows its time for me to get dressed) she paws my leg twice. She races down the stairs and waits at my bedroom door. When I open it she gives my girlfriend a kiss (shes still asleep) and walks into the bathroom while I get dressed. When im done and getting ready to leave we have our goodbye time consisting of a hug and a rub (if I dont she gives me this mean look).


* Does your Doberman know the difference between a workday and a non-work day? Do they act or behave differently to you? Both dogs know when its a weekend and know not to make a sound untill 9am. After we are alive, they have doggy play time while me and the GF have our coffee. If its passed 930am and they dont have breakfast the let you know it. Notice we dont go upstairs haha


* By your routine action around the home, do they react to situations which are out of your routine? (Enter/exit the same door, making loud noises, etc) Not really but they do think its crazy that I can go out the front of the house and come back in the back. They get so happy to see me haha


* How do they react to situations which are not normal around the home? (bark, go investigate, act tough, etc) If someone is outside (close to the house) Cayenne(dobe) barks twice and goes to see whats up. Dozer (amstaff) growls like chewbacca barks up a storm and checks every door and window in the house.


* Does your Doberman know what is supposed to be outside around your home? How do they react to things not supposed to be there? If its a person or a cat they make sure I see it. If its something else they dont pay much attention to it.

Risa knows my morning bathroom routine. She sleeps until she hears my hair dryer turn off. Both dogs wake up when I turn my computer off and/or shut my laptop. Fiddler runs to his crate for a treat every time my husband eats in the tv room. Every time I'm on the phone, both dogs get soooooooo annoying. They know when I leave the house whether I"ll be right back or whether I"ll be gone for awhile.... I could go on and on. They notice everything!

I don't really have a "normal" schedule, and so this doesn't really impact them. They are, however, used to waking up when my husband gets up for work. He takes them out around 7:00 am.

They don't really react when my routine differs.

They bark. We just moved into our new house about two weeks ago. Last week Fiddler saw a strange car parked outside. (Nobody was in it.) He started barking at it. I was amazed than in just a week he already knew which cars belonged here and which cars didn't!
