Hello All!
I wanted to get some information on agility and obedience training. We don't have many, if any, agility training sites out here. I would like to get our Rocco into something like that to keep him active and increase our bond. Any info would be appreciated.

I don't know that much about agility but as far as Obedience goes, I would recommend an instructor who has students in the show ring. Check around and try to find your nearest Kennel Club and start asking there, re who is in your area. Also if you let the folks know on this list your general area, something may pop up.

We started agility training last summer and found that it was almost necessary to have a good obedience background before starting. Agility is an uptempo thing so having decent control over your dog really helps, otherwise you end up with a lot of wasted time trying to grab your dog as they run laps around the course! It's very helpful to have a dog that will consistently respond to you and return to you in the face of many distractions (fun equipment to jump on, other dogs running around, possibly scary equipment like the teeter or shute). Not knowing any of your background, I would suggest completing a basic obedience before trying out agility. If you have an obedience foundation I'd say go for it, enroll in an agility course and check it out. It can be a lot of fun!

We haven't officially competed in either but are just having fun learning and practicing in both obedience and agility.

I would suggest checking around for an agility trial in your area. Often the larger shows offer obedience AND agility- check Infodog. Make the time to go ( it will be fun ! ) and then just start chatting with folks. If there is a good agility instructor in your area- you will find that out. I agree with the previous poster- the more obedience your dog has BEFORE
beginning agility- the better. Agility is very exciting, fun and unstructured- compared to obedience. So- if you go into it with a dog that has little control- I'm afraid that you will get frustrated and your dog will be confused and not have the fun he/she should have. Good luck to you. My dog and I do obedience, rally, agility and schutzhund !! And I gotta say- we love it all !!

Some obedience work before agililty is helpul. I do both. Obedience I`m ready to compete now, but am waiting for shows in my area.
Agility I am taking classes with someone who not only competes, but judges as well. She is the second one I found--I took classes elsewhere before. She teaches foundation skills which not everyone does. I think this makes more sense. We (Tamora & I love it). Not sure how long it takes before we compete. Tamora knows all the equipment, but there is so much more to learn. Anyway we are having fun.
Also dogs and bitches growth plates should be closed before a lot of jumping. This is usually around 18 months.
