New Forum Style

In this post TakirasDad mentioned there is going to be a few changes to the style of the forum, we would like peoples feedback as to what colour you would like the forum to be.

I know everyone would have a different opinion so to narrow things down I will make a poll to give you a choice of the main colour, but these are not set in stone if you know of another site that looks good post the link and I can work on those colours.

The forum style will be fluid (full screen) and also if anyone has any graphics skills they are more than welcome to design a new logo.

Would definitely love a darker color, staring at a monitor is like staring at a light bulb. Not good for the eyes...

black and tan ,lol.

I do however like black pages with gold borders etc, white or grey fonts. Doubt this will go over well tho.

after having seen the vote results, Im wondering if we could add black and gold/tan/rust to the vote?? It seems that there actually is an interest in this direction afterall.

Black can have an extremely classy look if done right - fits the breed.

Zombie's signature is a good example - minus the greenish hues, the black looks very cool in that context. Im thinking more of a reversal but something similar to that would look just as good or better.

I think it is important to use "research" when choosing the color framework because we may have users with visual disabilities. I live with a disabled person and it has definitely increased my sensitivity to the fact that many people have them. Hopefully, we would not inadvertently add to anyone's eye stress by overlooking accepted website accessibility standards. Most websites never even consider these issues but DT is not most websites! Here is a nice article on the topic:

10 colour contrast checking tools to improve the accessibility of your design | 456 Berea Street

Hopefully, the DT forum design choices will be based on more than color preferences and luckily, we don't have to reinvent the wheel.

Black skins are cool-looking but almost impossible to tolerate for any length of time. I definitely don't think we should have a dark colored background under any circumstances.

Unless there is going to be a few choices of skins, in which case members can choose what they like best. But for a default skin, a light colored background is definitely the way to go.

I have sensitive eyes, but used to be an artist. Personally, I don't like primary or basic colors for backgrounds any more than I like white - I think it is too stressful and tiring on the eyes when you spend a lot of time reading, replying, looking at pictures. I think a parchment color or a pale earth tone or very pale, earthy olive, with really rich accents like brick, rust - easy on the eyes, not so stark and tiring as white, and not as jarring as "true" colors, which can become boring and aren't really very interesting! Then a dark brown or deep green (or black, i suppose) font, and you have easy reading! I don't want to vote for any of the choices presently offered. Lois

I like black websites also, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea for a busy forum. I agree with Lois; I was thinking a light, rusty orange or olive, maybe yellowish... something like that. I LOVE bold, bright colours, but more for my dishes, curtains, walls, artwork etc., not so much for my computer screen.

I'll vote for green... just not a bright grass green or a lime green. Something a bit softer

ETA - Whoops, I accidentally voted for yellow. Whatever. :p

I used to draw on a forum that allowed you to choose your own format.

I just worry that w/some forums getting all fancy sometimes make things harder to read.

I was going to put black and tan as an option but I knew the others wouldn't have had a look in, as for having a chose of stlyes it might be an option but it all depends on me having time to do 2, I think a tan or light brown as the body of the forum with black writing and borders might work, but keep your ideas flowing

That sounds great, John As long as there is a soft lighter color as the background color, I think whatever trim color is selected will be fine. The "Black and Tan" idea sounds really neat! I know it's time consuming to build two/multiple skins, especially if there are compatibilty issues, so I think as long as there is a nice easy to read default, it should be well-accepted.

Thanks again for taking the time to do this

I completely agree! I am a member of another forum w/ a navy blue background- if it didn't have the option to switch to grey (which I do) I couldn't read the posts. It really strains my eyes.

I have been to other forums who had darker backgrounds and found them to be too much on the eyes. The tan/parchment idea sounds good.

I don't know if there's a way to lighten up the background even more, and have it be a lighter tan. But yeah, good start

Yeah I like the direction we are all headed. I know this just might be impossible or waaaay over the top but if you look at the signature on Zombies post, the second one in this thread, I think it would be so cool to have a backdrop similar to that (but lighter) with black lettering...I have always loved that kind of old world look and think it would be amazing in the context of the Regal Doberman.

If its too hard or no one else likes it...Ill just shut up and go to bed...
