When I 'thank' someone for their post but clicking the button what does that do? Do people collect points or something. Sorry I'm clueless.

Yes they do gets points. The points they collect are applied to their reputations on the site. You will notice little green boxes in a line on a users profile in the the posts. When you put your cursor over the little green boxes, you will see what status they are at.

See the little green block under your name? When people "thank" your post, those blocks increase in number. It speaks to a person's reputation -- or at least it should.

I've seen other web sites use it as a popularity contest. I hope it's intended as being reflective of a user's input and forum member support rather than how well their buddies like them.
