| New Sticky Idea: Bad Experiences with Breeders We were thinking that it may be a good idea to save links to threads which reference real-life situations regarding (not-so-great) breeders.
Whether it be genetic health conditions, poor temperament, bad experiences, etc. Even though its sad people have to go through this, maybe we could compile these links to show people WHY they shouldn't buy from a BYB/puppymill. Not just because its not ethical and we are being "snobby". So hopefully these sad situations don't keep happening to people.
Please add to this thread if you come across any stories like this in future - or even in the past if you remember them and can find the thread. If we get enough links, we'll create a sticky.

Obviously there are going to be some variation as far as what we all consider "good" and "bad" breeders, but honestly for the most part, we are all on the same page here.
This is just something to help us point to to support what we say about why we discourage BYBs/puppymills. It would be easier to link a sticky than it would for people to go look up specific threads about a Kimbertal situation, or the recent one about the dog who attacked the girlfriend and the ordeal with that breeder.
Just trying to come up with a way to further help educate people with stories folks here have already told. And hopefully make a difference in someone's life.

| Newdobiemum....there's only a few of us (aussies) active here...so any threads will be up to us to tell our stories if we have any to share. For my own part, I don't yet have any bad tales to tell as my last dobe was a rescue and I couldn't track his breeder down...my previous dobe was from reasonably good breeders who are sadly no longer breeding. Whilst I'm comming across breeders that I probably won't choose to go with for my next pup (for varieties of reasons) I can't honestly say that I have had any bad experiences so far with any of them....just small red flags and ethical concerns that make me cautious...but certainly not enough to create a thread taking them to task. Australia is a small pond dobe wise, with complicating factors of distance, culture and restrictive laws (quarrantine and bite sport bans) ...finding an optimal breeder here can be quite challenging and involve (unfortunately) a great deal of compromise (In my experience) I am hoping and praying that with due dilligence to my research, I won't have an experience to add to this thread in the future!

| I was wondering if anyone has seen a thread explaining WHY BYB's are so bad because I seem to be seeing a lot of people who just don't get it & have no idea why or what health testing is or why good lines are important. I don't know if it would belong in here or not, But I do think it would be beneficial to people who join the forum looking to get a dog to understand why this breed needs to be bred from quality. Although reading through and posting you get A LOT of good advice it seems to me a lot of newer people feel attacked so maybe if there was a sticky or a thread (I have no idea if there is or not) than the information would be there to read and they wouldn't feel like there being preached too? I Don't even know if this will be helpful or not, I just figured I would check and see if there was one around |

| | Lil Pup | Bad experience I do not have a dobie as of yet, I have been researching for almost a year and just taking my time. We had a deposit on a litter that unfortuanelty came down with parvo and although the breeder did what they could (vet, IV, antibiotics etc.) most didn't make it. Today my husband heard through work of a litter not far from us so we drove up there. As soon as I saw the puppies I was filled with trepidation as they were only a week old and had white 'socks' I asked the owner about it and she let us know that the sire was also the son AND the mom was "AKC registered with a Z." Needless to say I had to work to bite my tongue and just say No thank you. So upsetting. |

| Thanks for posting, Clarissa. Sorry you've had a rough time, but I appreciate you posting here. And kudos to you for doing your research since you obviously know what a Z factored dog means and how to say no instead of buying one anyway. Glad you found the forum
I completely forgot about this thread, and though didn't end up coming to fruition for a sticky, we still appreciate any additions you want to make to it

| Perhaps we should just have stickies for breeders that are commonly asked about? Not even just Kimbertal, but breeders such as Cambria, too - it can be hard sometimes to find a breeder in certain areas.
Actually, thinking about it (I wouldn't want to lump, say, Foxfire, with some bloke on Craigslist) perhaps we should just have links to comformation/show breeders, agility breeders, and working line breeders. That is - link to information on how to contact reputable breeders, maybe sorting by area etc.
