| | Big Pup | Handlers I have been away from the show ring for a long time and was wondering if there are current professional handlers who stand out such as Bob Hastings, Jack Dexter and Mo Miyagawa from the past. |

Bob Hastings is dead--two years ago. Jack Dexter has judged around here in the last five years but I don't know where he is these days--he didn't look too good when I saw him last. Mo Miyagawa is still showing Dobes. You should be able to find him by doing a Google search.
If you are still on the west coast--going from north to south: from Washington State--Elaine Hopper (Starlane Dobes) Cathy Ceely (Emerald Dobes), Kathy Rambo (Spokane area--doesn't breed) Teresa Riggs (Ikon Dobes), Mary Leahy (Wyndem). Oregon--Michelle Santana (Foxfire Dobes), Andy Linton. California--there are dozens: Marj Brooks (Manorie Dobes), Pete Ventura (maybe he's Arizona)--ummmmm I'd have to think about the California group--I've been away too long.
Where are you these days? Geographically each area has it's own hot handlers. |

| | Big Pup | Handlers Thank you for the great recap on current handlers. You are correct, I am on the west coast in Oregon. I used to show dobes back in the 60s in Southern California using both Hastings and Dexter. Moe has impressed me a great deal in more recent times. I thought he only handled for Mary Rodgers.
Again, thanks much for the recap. |

Again, thanks much for the recap. | I was showing against Bob Hastings in 1960 when he was living in Oregon--I always thought of him and Vic Reynolds as two of my major mentors. I think he and I moved to California about the same time. And when I moved back to the Pacific Northwest many years later and ended up in Portland, Oregon lo and behold there was Bob again. I also showed against Jack Dexter more than I would have liked--and Harry Sangster, Ben Brown, Corky Vroom and number of other California handlers.
Who did you have in the 60's--I was in Washington in the very early 60's and in Sacramento from around '63 to '67 and then in the Los Angeles area but showing an afghan and an occasional Manchester in the late 60's to early 70's.
Are you planning on or have you gotten a new Dobe to show?
And Moe actually handles some of Mary's dogs but lately he's been the sort of inhouse handler for the Kusumoto's (they were the money backer/co-owners of Repo Man). |

I sent you a reply last night but I'm not sure you got it as my computer skills are not the best. I'll try to repeat.
I had a Marienburg puppy and a couple of Jim Patton's dogs and did not have much success. Sultana with Rex Vandaventer was the big winner at the time. A little before that Bob Hastings and Tish were big. I believe Corky Vroom was handling a Haydenhill big winner. Seems like a long time ago. We showed a Great Dane here in the northwest, Ch. Von Raseac Lyric of Song with some success as she won many breeds and placed in some groups.
I now live in Portland and am thinking about another Dobe. I am impressed with Dabneys Phenominon and would consider one of his puppies. I also am impressed with Cambria back in the midwest. Any thoughts you may have would be greatly appreciated. |

I didn't get anything from you--so will make it easier. My e-mail addy is dobebug@juno.com
I think Corky was handling Haydenhill's Hurrah--or maybe it was Maestro--(too long ago) and doing quite a lot of winning with him. Didn't happen to be a dog I liked because of his very straight front. I was around for Tish and Sultana and saw a fair number of dogs sired by Jim Patton's Ch Patton's Ponder of Torn--a dog who produced pretty well, I thought.
I liked Dabney's Phenominon a lot as a puppy but less so the older he got. He's certainly a respectable dog but I like Ch Eastwick's Meadow Monster (another Ch Beaulane's Hot Topic son) better and I really like what Monty (Meadow Monster) is throwing. <VBG> I'd better--I have a Monty son who I think is pretty nice.
Some of the Cambria breeding is very nice (and I have a champion son from Ch Cambria's Highly Regarded) but I think you need to be very picky about what you get from Cambria. I also think their pricing is often out of line with the actual quality.
The Mount Hood Dobe specialty is at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds on June 22 (a Friday) followed on Saturday and Sunday by the Clackamas all breed shows. I'll try to remember to post ring times when the judging schedule is out. You might want to come around and see what shows up. There are some pretty nice dogs being bred in the Northwest--it's a well kept secret since clear back in the 60's. |

| | Banned | Corky definitely showed Maestro, whose kenel name was Rancho Dobes, wasn't it? He married Maestro's owner, too. I don't know if he also showed Hurrah, but from their pictures I thought they both had really straight fronts. Were they related?
Phenomenon is a Monty son also, isn't he? Or maybe I misunderstood what you meant. |

| It think Teresa Riggs is now Teresa Ross. I heard Andy Linton lives in Vancouver, WA now. Mo is still working but wanting to retire. I would recommend Teresa or Elaine Hopper ( www.starlaine.com). Kathy Rambo does a good job as well. I would not recommend Cathy Ceeley.
