I tell all my puppy owners when your training your show puppy just keep them happy and keep the training short b/c the have the attention span of nat at times. Especially the boys. Try actually throwing the bait right at him so it gets him on the nose a little. He will think " Hey what's that ?" After a few pieces have got him on the nose he will figure out the game. Another trick is play "get it" put him on the leash and toss the bait right out of his reach. Tell him "get it", "get it" in an excitied but soft voice. When he reacts and wants it let him go get. If he is ignoring you in class offer the bait to the dog right next to him(of course with the owner's permission) do that several times in a row till he thinks hey what's going on here. Training should always be fun the boys are needy. I have only had two dead heads in ring both we males and they made their handlers work their butts off. They are both at the rianbow bridge now. But I loved those boys dearly. And they did not give the dead head show ring temperment to any of their offspring. What I have learned from experiences with them was I babied them allot. In all honesty way to much. It made them wonderful companions but really bad show dogs. I learned a valuable lesson from those boys. Show dogs need to keep their spirits up and bosted allot of YEAH GOOD BOY- not where's mommy's baby boy !LOL Hope this help.

Question for breeders/experienced dog owners...

When looking and grading litters can you then tell if a puppy is a dead head or not? If they are, do you still try and show them? I would think if a puppy is a dead head, it will be a real challange to show.

In my experience in breeding I haven’t seen any puppies that are born “dead heads”. I do believe that puppies and adults become bored or turned off from showing for various reasons. Some puppies are more suited to be a family pet with an outstanding temperament. Others are natural at agility, and some should be working dogs with high drives others will enjoy time in the obedience ring where they are doing something challenging with their minds. Others will do it all with the dedication of a good owner. Some just expect to entertained more than what we are offering in a conformation ring. This is a very intelligent breed and they shouldn't be under estimated. I have seen a few so called "dead heads" make it to the top of this breed with the right handler and deli counter of treats to entice them. (he he) But you will never get any names out of me. LOL

A Puppies temperament will change a little when they are one on one rather than with their littermates. There will always be one or two really outgoing obnoxious puppies in every litter and they can over power the more mild tempered puppies. That's why all puppies need some time away from their littermates while they are still with their breeders. There are puppies that hate being stacked and fight tooth and nail. There are some that hate stacking on the table and are totally different when you stack them on the ground. There are some that have a high food drive but not when their being stacked generally b/c they are a little stressed. I have seen some that ripe the bait out of the fingers so hard your left with blood dripping down from their needle teeth. And there are those that just throw them selves into a stack with their chest out and head high and they just scream I want to be a show dog. I have one of those boys here he is 5 months old and still the same way.

I believe most super show dogs are made not born. I do not believe in forcing a puppy into the wrong situation b/c both the puppy and the new owner will be unhappy. And this is an expensive hobby for the breeder the owner. You want your puppies where they will be able to enjoy their life in their new home.

...Oh god I just kept writing and writing so I deleted the rest to stop myself before this response becomes a long boring book with allot of spelling and grammar errors.

I say his name, kiss to him, squeak a toy, show him bait. nothing.

Any suggestions?

Just wanted to add that I have not been doing any on lead practice with him except for our weekly conformation class. If we are in the kitchen and he likes what I am cooking I will say "Step, step, stay" to get him to stand, and then treat him but that is it! No gaiting practice no on lead stacking practice.
I don't know if your still checking this but if you are.. With puppies as soon as their learning to stack I teach them a trick their into. For example, my male bounces he loves it I hold the treat up and say bounce all four off the floor and he gets the treat while in the air. He was taught this b/c he was always jumping up, it took time. But in between stacking and gaiting at class I'd say bounce he'd get a treat, we'd sit down I'd rub him all over, up again stack, then bouce. Make it fun, so we aren't really at class. Bring a toy, throw it, allow him to go get it. My bitches all do the same thing they spin and twist, this is simply turning in a circle really fast. They do it in the ring and stop in a stack and get bait thrown, to catch. When their a pup it's just following the bait around in the circle and it's fun. They learn to go faster with time and learn the word that goes with it. It's always worked to make it fun for my guys.
Just one more thing, make sure your taking your dog hungry to class, no dinner before hand. And find something he REALLY likes to eat.
