Exclamation any general tips on training for conformation?

Hi All,
I am getting Renic ready for the ring and I was wondering if anyone has any general tips on training the self stack and the stand and stay.

He will stand and stay if I place his feet where they need to be but he dosn't stay long and he won't walk into the stack.

Also what is a good lead to use for the begining handler and pup?

ANY tips are appreciatied!!! thanks in advance!

have you taken any conformation classes? that would be the best start.

you can do some things at home like "look at me" with treats - that will get him to stand still and look at you at attention. Get him where he self stacks then play the "Look at me" with him.

You can also find his special 'catch words' that make him come to attention and stack then click and treat to mark the behavior.

we are going to class this Thursday. It should be fun!

What kind of show lead do you recommend for a beginer and pup? I have seen some nice ones but am not sure what exactly to get! I would appreciate any suggestions!

I'm not sure it matters for beginners or not - we got a slender leather leash and a black small guage show chain - against our black dog you can't really see the chain... but the instructor may have some suggestions as well. I guess for a puppy, think small versus a chain that is too heavy. The show leads/chains will be smaller anyway since they aren't for recreational walking.

All I can tell you is to not over-train and make everything FUN for him! I would do lots of free stacking rather than hand stacking him all the time. Get him used to a show lead.

There are lots of good tips on DPCA.org under breeders education...Read the articles, they are very interesting...Under conformation

Try this thread for good info on show leads:

Show Leads

A class is a really good idea, but always always remember to keep your puppy up and happy - make it fun. At a class, don't be afraid to sit some of it out when you have a puppy - too much is not good, and you can learn just by watching also!
