I guess someone showed up with the long trim, others liked it and it caught on. I really don't know how they got started.

We have handlers that are also breeders, who can and do influence the lengths of the crops on the puppies they produce. But there are also handlers like the one I use, who makes it clear he *does not* like donkey ears.

I think the length of the crops out there has evolved gradually, with no one trying to emulate any one dog who was a big winner or anything. People found that longer crops (as opposed to short crops) were attractive, so now we're seeing the progression of the "more is better" attitude in some situations where people are seeing just how long they can go.

Unfortunately, that's not always the case. As we've said, it always comes back to the quality of the cartilege. If you've got really good cartilege, ears will stand quickly regardless of how long the crop might be.

If you've got less than optimum cartilege, then you're taking on a major project to get those ultra long ears to stand. When it's common place for your dogs to have to go right back into tape the minute they walk out of the ring at 12 months plus-then you've exceeded what your cartilege can really handle, IMO. That's asking too much of the owners, asking too much of the dog. And that's happening out there.

I used Dr. Jezbera for the crop and he is supposed to be very good. I don't like the idea of another surgery but I can't stand a cropped ear that doesn't stand either.

Dr. Jezbera has done the crops on most of my dogs. I've only had a problem getting the ears to stand on one dog, that was about 6 years ago. In his case, Dr. J. suggested putting him on 1500 mg. of glucosamine daily for at least 90 days before doing anything else. You might want to give it a try, it can't hurt.

I think you are right, it's the american way. At least it is only the ears, I would hate to see the tails also getting longer (ha ha).

Don't laugh-I've seen longer tails, almost as long as a weimeraner tail. At least that doesn't seem to be something that would catch on.
