| Speaking of supplies. I'm already looking to find the best posting material for my dobe (plan on getting him this summer). I'm planning on a medium/long crop. Has anyone tried this product? What does everyone think ? http://www.ezearz.com/ |

My girl with the very long trim stood in only one taping. The shortest cut took the longest to stand going to a little over six months. The cropper was Patty Edwards tho and she trimmed according to the shape of the dogs head plus, I think, the strength of the puppies cartllage. I had one very long trim, one pretty darn long, one medium and one short medium. | I think that people should definitely consider strength of cartilege when they get puppies cropped. The length of time it's taking to get some of the ears to stand these days is getting pretty ridiculous. Besides the fact these ultra long ears start detracting from the appearance of the dog, it's kind of unreasonable to expect people to have to post for as long as some wind up doing.
My experience has been the same as yours, Linda. The longest crop I ever got on a dog (and it was pretty long) was also the dog who needed to be posted the shortest amount of time. She was posted a grand total of 10 days-after that she had standing ears that never drooped for a minute. But she had about the best cartilege I've ever seen on a doberman.
Conversely, Rush has about the shortest crop I've ever put on a doberman and his ears had to be strung eventually, because the cartilege was too thick and heavy for his ears to stand on their own. It always comes down to the quality of the cartilege.
Like some of the others have said on this thread, I was really happy that Razzle's breeder put a sensible crop on her, rather than those donkey ears. IMO, the length of her ears is perfect-long enough to make me happy and to enhance her appearance, not so long they look comical.

Consider if they are cropped at 8 wks and you have to tape till six months, which the chances are you will.
The foam tubing I used cost only two or three bucks and I only needed one bag plus one taping off another one. I have a lot of tubing left if I ever need to repair a window or seam around the house.

Was there a top show dog they liked who had them? Are handers saying they make the dog look better in the ring. What started this trend? My opinion is you are adding more hassle to a process that can be difficult for many people to begin with, plus I don't personally like the look of such long ears.

| What is the average length of time to get long show crops to stand? My puppy is 9 months and STILL not standing. I wish he would have had a shorter crop!! |

Are the ears standing at all for any length of time?

| Murreydobe,
One ear stands for a day but the other only half a day at best. I leave them taped except for when I took him to shows. One ear falls right at the base where the break is before they are cropped. I have never left them down overnight or longer than a day. Two years!! Yikes!
These are photos of his ears..
