Lost my dobe Sat. night

Dancer was my friend and savior for ten yrs we lost her to un detected DCM Sat. Friday night she struggled with coughing and dry hacking and Sat at the vets before doors opened. They did a check and yes heart was compromised so gave shot of laysixs (sp) and sent her home with several meds saying they would help ... NOT .. she died in my arms two hours later, but at least she was home! She was chasing squirrels in trees on Thurs. Sat. afternoon shes gone. Could I have done better?? Dear Lord I miss her so much !! Thank you

I'm sorry to hear of your loss--DCM is a terrible thing which takes too many of our dobermans. It's never long enough, but actually ten years is a good long lifespan for a dobe in these days. You were with her when she needed you and I'm sure she could feel your love.-

I am very sorry to hear you have lost your best friend. Please accept my condolences for your loss. Our dobermans are never with us long enough...no matter how long they live. Godspeed, Dancer.

And, yes, living till the age of 10 is pretty good for a doberman.

There are two tests you can do to test for heart disease. But because a doberman is okay today doesn't mean it will be okay tomorrow. There is Cardiac Heart Failure which means the dog is slowly drowning in its own fluids and the arrythmia, which is the heart beats out of sync and sudden death is what happens to those. They will suddenly drop dead running or suffer a quick death.

She was my fourth diobe but the first in many years. Ign orance is bliss I guess .all those years ago didn't know DCM. Then on here I learned it is a plague for dobes. I knew Friday night what had happened because of this site. Now somewhere down the line I will get another dobe and be better armed with what and how to deal but in the mean time I hope there is some way to breed this killer out of our dobes lives ! Thank you All

Could I have done better??
Absolutely NOT.

Re - Sat at the vets before doors opened...simply Bless You for all the Help & Family Respect you showed Dancer.
- this he knew, all to well
Granted, their loss is not easy....saldy, we all face each loss....for me it was 2 months ago.
- and I do feel your real pain, only thing that helped me was ordering a puppy // allowing our senior dogs to live on, in the new one
My girl had 4 strokes, in the middle of the night, in bed beside me....and passed in my loving arms, later with Vet // best way for me.

pest357 - so sorry for you !!

------------Kelly & (Amy - RIP @ 11.7 y/o)

I know the shock was very hard on you, but at least she had the blessing of a fast end, without a long period of feeling ill and miserable.

I hope that is some small comfort to you.

We are very sorry for your loss. We lost Rex after nearly 12 years. Despite knowing he would not live forever it was still hard to deal with.

Very sorry to hear of your loss!

No you could not have done better, I am sure you did the best you could! It is my opinion that a lot of the symptoms can "look like something else" they can look less serious and above all from what I have read on here and talked with others this DCM stuff can come on so so suddenly. Even Vets miss it if they do not do the right testing, and right away. My dog was lucky in that she got diagnosed early with left sided DCM so she spent 2 years on pimobendan and benazpril however the anti-arrythmics did not ever work for her so she was always at risk for collapse or sudden death. The only reason she got that early diagnosis was due to her being in there for other things and a sharp vet noticing an abnormal heartbeat...When that time did come and she went into acute dcm we thought her labored breathing was due to an old mammary cancer that had spread (after a long time of dormancy) as her lymph nodes in her chest were huge. No doubt that contributed but that just shows how insidiousness this thing is. Go through the other stories on here and you will see a pattern...its fast and sometimes there's little to no clues. You cannot compete with that.

My prayers are with you! Sorry again for loss.
