| Puppyhood Woes Degan is at the 6 month mark (as of yesterday) and weighs 27 kilos (59.4 lbs.) and is a big boy. Today I have 4 problems to ask about and a medical question, tomorrow I'll probably have more 1) He has all his teeth now but is still chew crazy. He's biting at us frequently when we try to sit with him on the floor or pet him (teething on our hands is more like it) and we restrain him, say NO, shake his back neck skin, all the things you're supposed to do but he still does it, like he makes it a game. Rawhide is great but gives him diarrhea. 2)His strength makes it awful hard to walk him when he sees blowing leaves or wind in the trees of people/pets/ anything moving. (Yes I have a prong collar and he's in training but a few days after training he's back to pulling me over). 3) He's jumping up a LOT now. He just jumped into my lap (or tried to) while I'm typing this and 4) He 's not behaving when loose in the house. He bounds out of his crate and runs like a banshee, smashing into walls and furniture and isn't even phased by it. He gets exercise and please don't say he's bored because I'm with him most of the day. Now to his defense, I'll say that he can be wonderful and he's smart and beautiful and I love him completely. But these habits are hard to combat because of his strength. Last night we were sitting on the floor together and he whirled around fast with his big head and smacked me in the eye with that hard forehead of his. This morning I have a black eye and I look like I did a few rounds in a boxing ring. As for the medical question, I used FRONTLINE on him and now he has white raised lumps all over the back of his neck. I applied the product on his back between the shoulder blades. Anyone else have this reaction? I guess that's enough complaining. Sometimes it's just nice to complain a little. We'll survive this I know. Thanks! |

| If you look at the thread.. biting puling my hair out , that is going at the moment it will give you ideas for the biting.. it sounds like you have the correct ideas, i think you might not be firm enough so he thinks its a game, the idea is th grab the scruff and down them to the floor so boy do they know you mean business !!
they will winper and yelp but you are not hurting them dont worry. it more shock.
as for the chewing. my 2 are 1 and 2 and still like to chew.
frozed kongs are great. get a kong, stuff it with dog food, kibble moistened with hot water to make it a pulp, peanut butter, just about anything, pop it in the freeezer over night and it will keep your puppy happy for ages, they love the cold and it lasts cos its frozen so takes then ages to get the food out !!
we also give them knuckle bones, they are good.
as for the pulling zeus is 1 and we still battle.. missy is 2 and she is fine.. just keep training its hard but must work in the end !!
as for the runing.. search old posts for ZOOMIES its a great post and will tell you all you need to know about that LOL
zeus always gets more wxcited if i sit on the floor as he knows its play time, again if he gets to ruff grab the scruff hold him down till he calms then carry on.
zeus aslo was a big jumper, we day "down" and push him down, also in the mornings ect when you great him, make him sit to fuss him, if he jumps up say no yurn your back and then try sit again, they soon learn they do not get a fuss if they jump only if they sit !!
if they jump put your hand out and deflect them.. karate blocks come in great LOL
keep going keep training and the best rule is to be comsistant !!
as for the frontline i use it all the time and have never had a prob !!
good luck !!

| Do you get him out 2 times a day for a good romp...he needs to get tired to help with some of the crazy house antics. Do check out the post on biting from yesterday....lots of good replies.
My older dog broke out all down his back from Frontline. I can't use ANY of the monthly topical flea/tick products on him. So, your boy may be allergic to something in the Frontline. I'd call your vet about washing it off (baby shampoo or mild shampoo...NOT a flea shampoo).....and then maybe wait a bit and try another product if you want to do the monthly treatment. Definitely check in with your vet so they have in your dog's record his reaction to Frontline.
I ended up using Sentinel HW prevention which kills the eggs but does not kill the adult fleas....my dogs really only get an occasional flea here and there. I've never had a flea problem and I live in Georgia! |

| Just because you are with him doesn't mean he isn't bored - how much actual activity and exercise does he get? How much training? How much exercise to the point of EXHAUSTING him does he get? This sounds like a bored bratty puppy.

I suspect the behavior is based more in "people problems" than "dog problems."

At a recent Dobe club event held at a Bay Area dog park, untrained and unaltered males were an issue -- as where their clueless owners.
Until this person has a better handle on their dog, I shudder at the thought of them taking him to a dog park to "play."

| The white raised bumps on the back of his neck sound an awful lot like the ones my puppy has. Tucker has 'puppy pyoderma', which is a local Staph infection in the skin. Usually in puppies, it resolves on its own. But if he just got it at 6 months, maybe some of the vets on here can weigh in as to whether it should spontaneously resolve.

How much exercise to the point of EXHAUSTING him does he get? This sounds like a bored bratty puppy. | I also echo this statement!! My boy is now 2 1/2 and he still chews on EVERYTHING and tries to get away with whatever he can. SO we take him out running ALL the time or to the dog parks etc... And make sure there are lots of toys and chews for him to occupy his time. He would just be in the house with me and my hubby and my other dobe girl and he would pace / RUN around the room whining etc... O MY WORD ANNOYING! But he is in doberteens and NEEDS time to exercise and stuff to do. I also agree that you have VERY good training ideas on the biting part but be more firm. I am pretty physical with both of my dobes (I DO NOT MEAN BEATING THEM!!!) so if you say he is getting too big to handle lots of times I will get down on the floor with mine and make them lay down etc or lay on or next to them holding them down till they calm down. I also hold their mouths shut with firm "NO!" so they know that this is not a game and I will not let go till they stop squirming... Now I DO NOT hold it soooo tight that I am hurting them just hold it firmly till they stop. You need to make it just enough not fun for him that he knows "hey this is not a game and you are the boss!" My girl will be 3 at the end of this month and she just now is starting to get out of the chewing everything stage!! AHHH!! Have patience and be persistant and it will pay off in the end! Good luck. |

She developed it when she was about 6 months as well. We have had to change her food like 5 times and finally found one that worked about 8 months ago. We also give her a bath in special shampoo and cream rinse. Now we are feeding her raw and she is doing great!! The vet should be able to get you what you need to get the bumbs to go away. |
