My regular vet used to crop ears, he used the Mole Foam posting method but he's older now and said he prefers to not do ears anymore. Its been around 10 years since he's done ear cropping. Thankfully, I have a great relationship with him and he's available for all my other veterinary needs.
If you buy from a reputable breeder in the future the pup will come home cropped, healed and in posts problem solved on your end!

Good to hear he isn't your regular vet, after the sutures are out I'd just post at home, have you seen the ear posting tutorial?

She does not appear to be bothered by its presence and I can easily see, access, and treat the incision.

The infection is gone, but there are still scabs. I believe I will talk to the vet today and let him know that I do not want to repost today, I'd rather let them heal fully and in the long run, I dont want my puppy to be horrified every time her ears are handled. I want her to heal fully, then start the posting, I just wanted to make sure that this wasnt a bad idea as far as them standing in the future.

I am patient, I am willing to post as long as necessary after they are healed. I do feel as though I was misled by this vet and his experience (NOT happy), I feel thankful for the people on this forum and I feel that I'm getting better, more complete advise and information here.

BTW, since she doesn't like me touching the edges, I've found that using Bactine is a great alternative to Neosporin. Its a water based spray rather than petroleum based ointment, has 2.5% Lidocaine to ease pain, and an effective antibiotic to promote healing.
I think you are figuring it out now! The foam tape was a good idea. The ease of access is why I love freshly copped ears on cup. I can quickly see what's going on with the ear and apply a bit of neosporin. The Bactine spray was another good idea, considering how fussy she was with her ears you don't want to make it worse right now. She will get better though once the healing is done.

Don't worry about her ears being set back, it's part of the normal process and as long as the healing time does not become lengthy (infection that won't go away or something along those lines) you don't have to worry about her ears not standing. Some time down right now will be just fine.

I am glad you are asking the vet not to post today. It is so hard to find competent ear cropping vets, you are not the first nor the last to be frustrated with their cropping vet.

Make sure anything you're spraying around her ears isn't ototoxic (can cause deafness if so) and, of course that you don't get it into wriggly pup's eyes.

I had never heard (or thought) of ototoxic, I'll look into it. As far as her eyes, I'm using a clean paper towel over her eyes before application.

I have watched a lot of posting tutorials, my favorite was one done by Kris Johnson of Krimson Dobermans. I agree with you... no more BYB for this kid!! I'm plan to set some cash aside for the purchase of my next dobe.

I paid...
$350 for my unregistered BYB puppy
$600 for an unsatisfactory ear crop by a vet that doesn't specialize
$100 in supplies and medication to treat ear crop.

Total so far for this unregistered BYB puppy with no health testing of parents... $1050 and climbing
In the future... $1500 just doesn't seem to be so much now.

I'm posting my costs so that others may learn from my mistake before making it themselves. Although I wouldnt trade my girl for anything!

I did look into ototoxicity of Bactine, I did not find anything from any of the multiple websites I reviewed that it would be ototoxic. They also group it together with Neosporin in a few of the sites as a comparable medication.

Where are you located at? I would not recommend going back to the vet when it is time for posting. Depending on your locating there should be willing hands on this list to help you out.

I am going back to the vet in 2 1/2 hours to have sutures removed. I am not going to have them repost, I'm letting the ears heal completely before putting them back up.

I'm located in a very small town in central North Dakota. I'm an hour away from any town of decent size. I've been made aware of one reputable breeder in my state, but they are about 3 hours from me.

It doesn't have to be a breeder of Dobermans. It could be a breeder of boxers or Danes or schnauzers, any breed with cropped ears that they are experienced with posting.

It can even be someone who has posting experience because they helped someone else or learned because they one had a breed that needed to be posted. If I ever stopped owning/Breeding/ exhibiting whatever I would STILL help if it was needed.

I am not sure which breeder you know of, but here are 3 you could try, all are very nice and could certainly help you out if needed.
Mandy (Jaimand) is in Fordville, ND - Home
Megan (Sabri) is in Dickinson, ND - Index
Denise (Denmor) is in Wishek, ND - Demor Dobermans, Doberman Pinscher Breeders located in Wishek, North Dakota.

I would contact any of them and see if they by chance placed a dog with somebody or know somebody near you who might know something about posting. It's worth a shot, if nothing else.

Thanks for that advise, it was Jaimand that I was aware of. But I've also had some communication with Megan from Sabri.

I had experience posting one of my minpins ears, but they are posted differently so it really doesnt compare to posting my dobe.

Her sutures were removed yesterday, and thankfully the vet agreed with me regarding keeping the posts out until ears are fully healed. I'm hoping to be able to post this weekend.

ACarrigDobermans... out of curiosity, where (approximately) are you located? I used to live in Kentucky, I was in Somerset (approximately 1/2 way between Lexington, KY and Knoxville, TN).

I hope your pup's ears are healing and she feels better.

Sidebar: I am just amazed by some vets. If that vet "discourages" cropping then why in the world are they even offering it as a service? If they don't like cropping and they wish others wouldn't they are perfectly welcome to NOT crop at all. Why take someone's money and do a sh!tty job if you don't like cropping to begin with? I wonder sometimes if some vets are not out to prove some kind of point of their own agenda about how "bad" cropping is, when in reality they are the ones making it such a bad experience for pup and owner and lining their pockets in the process.

They are healing beautifully, There are a few places along the edges that I just want to give more time. I want to see that the scabs are all off, and that the edges are finishing nicely. In the areas that the scabs have come off, they are looking really nice. I'm thankful that I removed her posts early, and cringe at the thought of what pain she would have endured if I had kept them on until Monday. Not to mention, the delay in healing that would have caused. I think we're down to just days until I can post... I'm hoping for Saturday, but realistically, I think it will be Sunday.
