There have been a few times that I've had to tell hubby (and other people) not to repeat commands over and over, and not to sit on the floor and get him all wound up. Sometimes he's just going to do what he wants, regardless of what I tell him.

I did most of Red's training at home so he got to see first hand how I trained him, and what is involved. He never did any of it himself, but he could see what went into it.

I don't really have any advice for you other than crate training might be your answer... for the dude, not the dog

What, exactly, do we have men for again? I forget.
Not to figure out that the missing venturi pipe could only be at the bottom of the koi pond, or to water the vegetable garden (the magic place where the ingredients for his amazing salads get nutured and harvested), or to pick up the dog poop when my last meeting only finishes at 7:30pm....I guess they do other stuff - ride bicycles, recover from riding bicycles, eat to ride bicycles tomorrow... <3

I'd need to know if he can fix major plumbing leaks, first, though. Oh, and outdoor lighting problems.

Bruce or my husband?

haha, I'm tempted to crate train him (my dude, not Bruce lol). I'm lucky (sort of), that his work is a little slower right now, he is home to see what training Bruce actually entails. He has also been making somewhat of an effort this afternoon...we'll see how long that lasts.

I think they were too, and have threatened him with one a few times.

When you remember let me know because I've forgotten too.

Lol (try harder, still haven't spit anything on the laptop, close but not quite ). He isn't the greatest with plumbing, outdoor lighting he has dealt with though. He owns his own cleaning and restoration business, he can professionally clean your carpets, ducts, upholstery, windows, do mold repair, flood damage...I thought about getting his breeders to take him back, but I doubt they will after all this time.

Lol, I'm glad I started this thread. While I was mostly just ranting in a good natured, humorous way it is nice to know that I am not alone in this.

That's the only cleaning he does though, I am fairly certain he is deathly allergic to doing dishes, laundry, any basic housework because he has NEVER done them in the entire time I've known him lol. I also have to nag the crap out of him to do the carpets/ducts/windows on our house because he is so busy doing them for everyone else all day....wow, yeah I'm a horrible salesperson, what am I saying...he is perfect at cleaning! Just don't expect him to listen to you when it comes to your dogs.

My family was like that with my first 2 dobes "YOU"VE GOT TO TRAIN THIS DOG!" ...so I'd show off his training first running through voice commands then doing it all with hand signals...asking "which bit of training aren't I doing?" The reply would be "you've got to train him to do it when I ask him!" ...oh you mean I have to train you.
(I would try....but it took them longer to pick it up than a dobe would).
With my 3rd dobe....I took the attitude of 'don't come to me in tears when someone gets hurt. I've showed and told you what to do/what not to do...it's now your responsibility.' ...surprisingly, this worked quickly as the first over enthusiastic tooth contact during a "forbidden" game of foot wrestle my father instantly got the concept that initiating that game was going to come back and bite him. (pun intended). plus the only response it got from me was a shrug and an "I told you so".

I laugh every time they grumble about my dogs not being trained not to beg...when the only people I ever see making my dogs an extra slice of vegemite toast for breakfast is my parents. ...and pointing out that my dogs don't bother begging off me, because they know it won't work. They must be the ones training my dogs to beg. (it shuts them up anyway)

P.s. now that you're not setting hubby up to fail ...click and reward him for each time he behaves in the desired manner...and report back how his training is progressing

In my experience, husbands don't recognise chores. They only see their wife arriving home late from work and tearing around doing arbitrary things. The dogs see that too. Difference is the dogs join in (not productively, but enthusiastically at least) and hubby sits on the couch wondering why I can't just relax for a bit and hear about his bicycle ride.

Playing rough is the only way men can show they care too much testosterone,might tell hubby if he get the dog too wired could be dangerous around kids ?
My hubby hates Buddy so no interaction between them so no problems. He will feed and water the dogs if I'm sick or in the hospital he just will not pet Buddy but he will tell him to go away.

I tried the clicker training on my x wife. Guess what it didnt work. Now I have a dobie. I may not be the best trainer but at less this girl listens better then my x. Not alot of guys on this forum I take it. Just remember it does go both ways.

It's funny that you mentioned begging, Bruce will NOT beg from me. He will come over for a minute see what I'm doing then when he is told "off" he goes and lays down. When the hubby is eating....good lord, Bruce tries to climb all over him to get his food. I literally have to let the hubby eat and work with Bruce, and then eat my dinner later. He also won't beg off the kids, he will however sit beside my daughter (she is 4, and has autism) because he has figured out that she drops food sometimes. He LOVES her lol, but won't beg or take food, he just patiently waits for something to be dropped.

Yeah mine rarely does chores, although yesterday I think he may have been sick. He got home from work, and my son had been home sick all day so I wasn't able to take Bruce for a walk. I left my son with the hubby and went to take Bruce to burn some steam off, and asked the hubby to please sweep the kitchen and front entrance. Now normally when I leave and ask him to do something (like refill Bruce's water...seriously how hard is that?!) it isn't done when I return and I end up doing it. When Bruce and I got home yesterday the floor had been swept, and well!

You know Bruce may be a wild typical puppy at times, but he is incredibly gentle with the kids. My kids have been around tons of animals with my line of work being what it is/was, and have been taught the proper way to interact with dogs. I have worked really hard since getting Bruce to teach him, and the kids to interact properly, and it has worked. Even when wound up he is gentle with them. Of course they are never unsupervised with Bruce, and when he is wound up I'm extra vigilant, but so far I have seen nothing even remotely too wound up towards them. The worst he does is sit near them when they have food, and he LOVES to lick my daughters feet (and she laughs hysterically, which makes him lick more lol). It makes me laugh that my 2 kids (who both have autism) were easier to "train" in regards to Bruce, than the hubby is.

Lol, it absolutely does go both ways. I have a number of male friends, and some of them have had some crazy women over the years. I really do love my hubby, and he is not a bad guy at all. Just frustrating as hell when it comes to Bruce.


The thing with my hubby is that he has always had dogs, and he loves them but they were never actually trained. They were always just the average family pet that can follow the basic command of sit, and not much else. He also had the mindframe that the old school training methods were still the way to go. While I have brought him around on that one, he is apparently having trouble grasping the "new" positive training methods. When we met I had just lost my last boy, and it wasn't the right time for a new dog. Bruce is the first dog we've had since we've been together (he is my 2nd husband, and let me tell you my ex makes the new one look like an angel so I'm really not complaining in this thread, just good natured fun).

This thread has made me chuckle and it has all been in such a fun context. Can't imagine this thread on any other breed or working dog forum. Dobermen people have to have a sense of humour or we would all be in therapy!
