Found an incredible breeder, and it so happened that a black male became available after I had started talking with her. Went ahead and sent a deposit and bought a crate, nametags and collar for him. Just found out that the family that had originally put a deposit down for a black male (then changed their minds to Brown) changed their minds AGAIN and now I am heartbroken : ( I have been looking for a puppy from a reputable breeder within 4 hours of my home for 4 months and am getting pretty discouraged at this point.
Now this might seem crazy, but I don't have any kids of my own and this puppy was going to be our baby... and now I feel so dissappointed that he's not coming home. I'm at a loss.
The breeder was very kind and offered to send back my deposit or to hold it for her next litter. She has been so helpful in my search, and has spent hours on the phone with me talking about dobermans and giving me training advice... I would really love to have one of her puppies knowing the amount of expertise and support I would get, but at the same time my SO and I got so excited about this puppy that we're going to find it very difficult to wait months and months before her next litter.
Has anyone else gone through this heartbreak before, and what was your decision? Thanks!!
Just for thought.. I'd be concerned with a breeder saying what is and what isn't available so early on in a litter when there is only one or two pups of color sex. UNLESS its a show home open to a pet or vice versus. Or a long waiting list for a pet or show pup. It's a pet peeve of mine when there's a young litter and people are promised certain colors or sex. Isn't the point of a reputable breeder breeding to produce show/performance dogs?
On color.. Some people can't budge, but when it comes down to it temperament for your situation is key. Nothing wrong with preferring something and waiting though. Sometimes the best thing is joining a waiting list and well waiting.. Good luck
She does have 3 black males, and a few red males as well. It was a large litter, bigger than she expected, and I know she did have a waiting list. One of the three black males was promised to a performance/show home, she just doesn't know which one yet since they are so young. She will be doing temperament testing at 8 weeks, at that point she will have a better idea of who's going home with who. This will be my first doberman, and I am very curious about the idea of being "assigned" puppies by a breeder. My other dog was a rescue, so we had no choice for anything with him, we weren't even looking for a dog at the time, but it was the perfect match.
My husband started talking to our boy's breeder through email, getting his was a surprise birthday present for me (I had wanted a Doberman for a while). When we went to meet her, we were on the list for a black pet girl, but I changed my mind to a boy (because of their size and personality), after meeting her male. We ended up with our red boy Thor, and I wouldn't change our decision for anything.
I can see having a color preference (I prefer black bitches over red) but in the end, you will love the puppy your breeder picks for you.
An update: the breeder sent pictures of the red males and Justin wasn't taken by either of them : ( I posted a new thread about expanding our search area since we are both getting very ansy about bringing home a puppy soon. Couldn't compromise on color.
Mrsnitrobob- while I do run on occasion, definitely sounds like I couldnt handle a girl! I'm definitely looking for a more laid-back dog that we can take with us on camping trips and hiking trips, one who is vigilant but who adapts quickly to new situations. I will definitely be keeping in touch with you for advice on surviving puppyhood though!
So now, we are looking to compromise on distance. If we can't find any within a reasonable driving distance (which we have expanded from our original 5 hours), then we will have to make the decision to be added to a waiting list and get a puppy in the spring :/
I am REALLY wishing I had contacted your breeder sooner, Mrsnitrobob, but she was originally out of our "distance" parameters : ( Your girl sounds wonderful, I'm so glad you found eachother!
If a black is what he's stuck on, then just wait. It's a long term commitment, and you want both of you to be in "love" with your new family member. As for male or female, for myself, it just happened that the female was the more active one. She's worked out great for our family.... because I relied on the breeders advice (knowing her litter, and my family, after several long talks). If you choose a great breeder, who's not in it just for the money, they will help advice you which puppy would be a good fit for you family too.
You'll find the right one, even if it means waiting longer. It's worth waiting for the right one.
Good luck! And I can tell you all about my puppy experience (haven't had a puppy in the house for over 10years, so had to relearn it, lol). Just let me know
Some things just can't be rushed. The right dog will come along in the right moment, and you will wonder why you ever worried about him coming into your life.
Hahaha so true!!
When in the car, walking or at training class, Thor is a very well behaved, serious dog and stunning dog. At home, he is such a doofus, would be happy playing and being a fool all day.
People are often intimated by him when he is in his serious walking mode. I don't tell them he is a mama's boy who spends a good portion of his day whining. :rolleyesww:
LMAO I am in LOVE with that boy!!! My SO likes him because he is a deep, dark, rich red with sharply contrasting markings. He said if I could find him a red that looked EXACTLY like him then he wouldn't mind... Lol or one like this:
And a special Thank You for that last video, here I was reading so much about how Dobermans hate the rain that I was worried about raising a pup to still like water, here in Missouri we have lots of creeks, streams and rivers that we LOVE to go canoeing on and were wanting to take our boy with us. We call it going on a "float trip". Combined with camping, it's my absolute favorite summer pastime!! My dog HAS to like water!
