Growing Pains & Metacam/Lumpy Nut

My squishy little baby is not so little anymore. He's just over 60lbs at 8 months (very tall and slender - the bulk is just starting to come).

Well he would always get growing pains, a limp that would come on over night, last 3-4 days, then be gone like it was nothing. I thought it was done, but another round started up Monday. He was rushed to the vet the first time this happened and $80 and 5 minutes later i was sent home and told to let him rest til it passes and it's all very normal. This time I was not worried, except that it's very icy and slippery here and i didn't want him to hurt his other leg because he's favouring the growing one.

Well Tuesday night I noticed a lump on one of his testicles (the only time I will use the proper term - I apologize in advance) and just about died. With a friends calming voice I managed to make it to Wednesday morning before a sobbing call to my vet. After a few questions (does he seem to be in pain, where on the ball is the lump, yadda yadda) they booking me in for first thing today.

Well turns out my wee bebe truly is becoming a man. The lump on his nut is actually a matching set on both those danglers, and is just some rapid growth that the rest of the balls have not caught up with.

The vet was way more concerned about his limpy leg, and it causing injury to the good one. He prescribed Earl Metacam for a few days and some rest. Now that's not to bad at this point since the growing also tuckers him out (but my god, we killed the down-stays at obedience last night!!!!) but what about when the meds work and he's back to him regular self and going full pin all the time? We do lots of training, but he needs to run before he will calm down. Any suggestions on how to keep him calm for a few more days?

Also I'm wondering what to expect from the Metacam? I've read a few threads that indicate I should expect some runny-bum, and that's ok I guess. It will be a bit frustrating since we actually just switched from Acana LB Puppy to Acana Pacifica, and due to the fire at the factory it was basically a hard switch, about 3 days overlap then just straight Pacifica. I've never seen such FANTASTIC turds from him! It was like an early Christmas miracle! Solid like Barack and small and great all around. I'm waiting til tonight to give him his first dose, cause I would rather be there than come home from work to an explosion. I'll toss some pumpkin in his food tonight, and hope that helps. Any other surprises i should look out for??

Thanks for reading my novel. One of these days i'm going to figure out how to make my pictures fit and post a bunch of the majestic beast I call Earl Sweatshirt.

If you give the Metacam, you will need to keep him tethered or on leash, crated and restrict his exercise. Otherwise, he will most likely overdo it. I've only had one dog with a digestive reaction to Metacam but that was after 2 months of full strength for arthritis :) For regular 1 week of pain type stuff, I've never had a dog have issues. You can add some pumpkin or even white rice to firm stools if they get loose. I give the dog who has issues a lower dose for her arthritis and pepcid and sllppery elm for her tummy.
