If his body stops freaking out( probably from the meds he was on) and the reaction stops, you will be very surprised how well he does with management. My Lab has been chronic for the last 6 years. I realize that you are dealing with something a little more intense but hang in there he might surprise you. I had a clearance test done for Beau when he was first diagnosed and he was at Approx. 21% kidney function. He was right at that cusp of not having enough function, but knock wood, by allowing him to drink about 1 - 2 gallons of water a day he clears his system of toxins. I also am very strict about his diet and the amounts he gets. Kidney diets weren't good for him, he lost a ton of weight and he was getting almost 7 cups of food a day! After a lot of research I put him back on his regular food( Iams mini-chunks) 3-4 cups a day. He has maintained for the last 6 yrs. Be prepared for lots of potty breaks because if he is handling the water he is going to have to go! Again I realize that these are 2 different situations, but I hope that this helps. It really sounds like things were going on with his kidneys to start with and then the meds started to screw with him. If they haven't done so ask you vet about a low dose level of prednosilone to stop the allergic reaction (throat legions etc) going on with the meds (Rhimydil ? and tramadol). But again ask your vet as I don't know if that would be good for your guy. If I can be of any help at all with management ideas let me know. My e-mail is mfkelly66@gmail.com

that's a great thought, but he's also severely anemic, among other issues. i honestly don't believe he will recover from this. neither do any of the vets we've seen since Wednesday. the lesions are not an allergic reaction, and they were a possible cause of his nosebleeds. turns out he's hypertensive and his nose bleeds when he gets excited.

The hypertension is most likely caused by the kidney issues. Evidently, the reduced blood flow through the kidneys causes the circulatory system to "back up", and the result is high blood pressure. Anyway, that's the explanation my vet gave me when my CRF kitty devloped high blood pressure, and had to be put on medication.

This news is so heartbreaking...I can't imagine having this happen to such a young puppy. I am so very sorry for this happening to Deckard, you and your family. Words aren't enough...

I would be talking to the maker of Rimadyl for some compensation possibly. I think they are the ones that had a class action lawsuit against them: http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=...tion%20lawsuit

yeah...we were given a few weeks to a month. i don't see him "pulling through" when he's barely eating or drinking and he's losing protein through his urine faster than he's putting it on.

the Rimadyl was not the cause, and i have a full writeup from UPenn that says they are not at fault. i have reported it to pfizer, however.

I had originally wrote my response not knowing your boy is so sick. So I am editing it to say that I am just so very sorry. (HUGS)

I wish I could say something to ease your pain but just know that we are all here for you.

he's gone.

last night he wouldn't eat and couldn't keep anything in his system - the nausea meds came right back up, as did all the water he tried to drink. he was up every hour, maybe, to puke. by this morning even the light was gone from his eyes, so we took him in. he was surrounded by love; my boyfriend, his mother, Deckard's favorite vet and vet tech, and i were all there. his blood pressure was so low it took two doses for him to go.

this was the hardest thing i've ever had to do, but i'm glad it's over. i didn't want him to suffer, i didn't want him to rely on drugs for weeks, and i didn't want him to be confined to the couch/living room when we were home.

i'll miss my sweet boy.

If there's a need for a Beware of Doberman Talk website, it's to warn of heartbreaking stories like this and others. I am so very, very sorry for all involved to have gone through this.

the worst part of all this? if given the opportunity to do it all over again, i'd willingly put myself through this pain just for the joy he gave us. he was a good dog. he did everything i asked of him, he was a complete sweetheart to everyone he met, and every dobe-scared person i know who met him instantly loved him. he had the best temperament of any dog i've ever known. our breeder offered another dog when we're ready, and i think as long as i get another of Dagger's sons, i'll be happy. from what i understand, all his sons have had an ideal temperament. we just got crappy luck with Deckard's development. learned my lesson, won't take another runt regardless of the breed.

Wow, although I'm new to this forum, I feel like we lived this a little with you and your precious boy.

This is tough and wow, I'm so so sorry.

I look forward, when you and yours are ready, to living thru a new addition, not a replacement, but a supplement so to speak.

Thanks for having me hug my Huckleberry boy a little longer. The tears I shed melted into him for you and your Deckard.

Sorry for your lost !!!!! From the sounds of it, Deckard is where he needs to be now.
I always have a place in my heart for Runts as I started out in life as a runt.
The love you gave Deckard will not be forgotten as their others in life who would have walked away.

Nubis (Anubis), 3 times a charm.
RIP (Kaiser & Lady)
