| Poor Richter. And poor you! What a bummer. I cannot even imagine having to contain a little dobe pup like that. Sending you lots of good wishes for Richter's recovery!!
And Richter, stop messing with your bandages! You will be much happier without the cone of shame!!

| Yeah, Si's ears are longer than most folks' dogs here, I think, except for his cousins.
I much prefer the medium show crop (*shh.. don't tell Siguy*) |

| Quote: "I think it was $60 because we had to replace the plastic splint, too, not just change the bandage. Generally, when I check my vet's prices for stuff versus the other good vets in our area the cost is pretty close to the same across the board. If we decide to just re-wrap it tonight it should be less."
You can go to Menards, Home Depot, or such, and find the size that would be half the diameter of your pup's leg and buy PVC pipe and have it cut in half width wise.
Then, you just cut to the length desired.
Good Luck with your Beautiful Baby Boy! |

Good Luck with your Beautiful Baby Boy! | There is no way I'm skilled enough to do that! Plus, we're using splints from the specialist, so I don't think I could quite replicate them. Tonight's bandage change was only $30, so that helped. Quote:

Whip lost some mobility in her foot, from the long-term casting, but she gained much more stability in her hock joint, which is what she had to have. Her case, of course, very different than Richter's, but it did teach me to really go over the details with the whole tx team, and weigh all that input carefully.
Whatever you decide, I'd see if they can give you a gentle PT plan for those toesies, once he comes out of that immobilizing deal.

| I can vouch that PT can be very effective. When Cleo had some trouble after her latest ACL surgery a couple of years ago (keep in mind she was 8 at the time, an oversized rescue, had ACL surgeries on both knees and extensive arthritic damage due to her previous "owner" not having dealt with a torn ACL for close to a year before the rescue got her).
I went to a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner. Cleo had 10 sessions which each included Ultrasound to warm up the muscle, Cold Laser to help break up the scar tissue and Hydro Therapy on an Underwater Treadmill. It worked wonders on her. I still have periodic Ultrasound and Cold Laser Therapy every now and then because of the extensive damage in her left knee and considering her age, size and all she's been through she is doing amazing with it.

| We decided to resplint, though he is now going to have to wear a cone of shame when we aren't supervising him. Splinting allows him a little more freedom to be out of the crate and walk on it around the house, rather than 24/7 crating without the splint. Since he will fling himself around in his crate if he's unhappy (violently, not good for the toe!), we agreed that was the best option. But we definitely need to keep him from ripping into the splint, so cone of shame it is.

| Richter defeated his cone of shame and chewed off his splint again yesterday. Went in today and we've decided he's healed enough to not have another splint. We just have to continue limiting his activity. He's walking on the foot really well and had no pain during the vet's exam. He should continue to heal really well as long as we can keep him from being completely crazy

I figured out what he did, too. I had just bought him a new, bigger cone because he outgrew the other one - his nose was too long for it. He figured out that if he put his foot forward, braced the cone on the floor over the foot and pushed hard with his head he could push the cone far enough down his neck that he could just reach the splint. I watched him do it after the splint was destroyed and I put the cone on to stop him from licking his sticky leg. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. He's too smart for his own good! (Actually, it's tons of fun to train with him, because I can watch him literally thinking through stuff...it's a kick.)
